Whether the set was in the 1st round of ATP 250 or in the final of a Grand Slam, what is, in your opinion, the highest-quality set of all time?

When i say the highest-quality set, I mean the set where both of the players involved played at the top of their game.

Vast majority of tennis fans have not seen vast majority of all time matches. What’s even the point of asking for all time bests?
there isn't a point. Best matches I've ever seen are usually on a side court with 2 guys who are top 20 players having a high level and extremely competitive match with great shotmaking.

In terms of physically killing each other it is USO 11 final , 3rd set

I liked 2009 Wimb finals 5th set as well
...which just ended, I think. But I ticked off my wife by postponing dinner plans with her and her family...repeatedly...I even snuck in some of the awards ceremony.

This argument is a bit stupid. Nobody has seen every tennis match, yet people discuss the best match of all time, the best player of all time etc. since this is a tennis discussion forum. However, if the wording bothers you that much, you can interpret it as the highest quality set of tennis you've seen in your life.

People discuss it, and it’s always stupid. It’s the same with “best album of all time, greatest novel of all time, etc”. People love hyperbole, doesn’t mean it makes sense to engage in it constantly

You do realise this is a tennis forum and no official decision will be made which will determine the actual best tennis set of all time? I am just asking for people's opinions since i like discussing tennis and, thankfully, this is the right place to do it. If the "hyperbole" offended you, I'm sorry and I hope it hasn't ruined your day. :)

Lol you say this while moaning about me calling out your thread title. Don’t take it personally, this was a general observation about how futile it is to frame one’s opinions as anything “of all time”

I wasn't moaning and I'm sorry if it came off that way. I posted this thread because i want to know people's opinions. If I had an agenda, i wouldn't post a discussion thread about best sets of all time (which I thought was extremely obvious that these are just opinions). I didn't realise someone would take it literally and be offended that I have the gall to officialy proclaim the best set of all time.
Have a nice day! :)

The OP creates a poll for the greatest set "of all time" and 8/9 threads involve current players and matches contested within the past 10 years.

Tennis existed, believe it or not, in the 70's, 80's and 90's and there were countless matches with greater sets than most listed in the "poll."

I would put many more tennis sets from past and present but the poll has a very limited number of options so i chose some of the sets already mentioned in this thread so don't take the poll too seriously. If people don't agree with the choices, the majority will vote for others.

@Street this is why I brought it up in the first place, because of the inevitably very high levels of recency bias, in this and most other similar threads

Of course, the recency bias is inevitable since most people on this board didn't watch tennis in the 90's, 80's etc. That is why i'm asking for people's opinions and not to take this thread as the be all end all. If someone, for example, says that the best match of all time is djokovic-simon from AO 2016, that doesn't mean it is a fact(it obviously isn't), but it is still somebody's opinion.

While you are absolutely right that there is a recent bias, in the sense that most posters will not mention many high-quality matches from, say, the 1970s... it is also true that tennis quality generally (but not always) increases with time. A tennis match from the 1930s or so could never match the quality of modern day classics.

Here is a clip of Bill Tilden playing in the 1930s. Compared to nowadays' standards, the tennis quality was objectively poorer.

Forget the 1930s, you’re unlikely to even get a lot of responses from 15-20 years ago.

No tennis matchup has ever produced the quality of Novak and Nadal at their best. Take your pick of which match, but the answer includes those 2

Here's the thing about 2011 USO 3rd set. First, it is my favorite set of tennis ever and probably the most entertaining hour of tennis I've ever seen ... but it was not Novak's best level. Novak was nursing a shoulder injury and he served like crap for most of that USO. His baseline tennis was otherworldly and his serve being crap is what created so many amazing rallies during that set. Because Djokovic was serving like **** but both him and Nadal were playing god level baseline tennis every game was filled with insane baseline rallies but with a healthy, best level Novak it would probably have been different so I struggle to say it's the best level of any set ever.

Not sure what my favorite is but Safin Agassi first set, Borg McEnroe 1980 Wimb 4th set, Djokovic nadal uso 11 3rd set, RG 13 5th set, fed Safin ao 2005 4th and 5th sets, Verdasco Nadal ao 2009 4th set are some of my favorites
