The "How to keep Djokovic and Nadal from vulturing every single major" thread

I may sound as a salty Federer fan, which I think I am, but I really wish that these two guys finally stop winning all the Grand Slams, it's becoming tiresome.

So let's bend the rules to try to keep Djokovic and Nadal from winning more majors, just two conditions:
-They cannot be banned from playing
-The best-of-5 sets format must be kept.

Imagine and discuss

Have Fed be born in 1995.

The youngsters have to improve to get to the Djokodal level. That's what Stanimal and Murray did to win their slams. Generations have come and gone waiting for Djokodal to get old.

Teach the NextGenners to hold their nerve and see things out in Bo5 matches and not just Bo3?

Give them a tougher draw. Their initial round matches have been too easy at Wimb this year. Had Novak faced say Kyrgios or Cressy in first 2-3 rounds he would have been vulnerable for sure. Likewise for Nadal if had some tough opponents initially. This Wimb the draw has really been ridiculously easy for both in the initial rounds.

The ban on Russian players including the current world #1 plus the withdrawals of Berrettini and Cilic (2 very good grasscourt players) already rendered the draw this year somewhat farcical.

Have the younger generation study film of Fed vs. Djoker and Nadal in slams, so they too can learn how to take it to Djoker and Nadal in slams.

True but they were all seeded players and would anyways meet Novak/Rafa later. Rafa and Novak need to get tougher draws from R1-R3. Look at FAA or Tsitsipas draw in initial rounds. It was pretty tough.

Give Medvedev a net game. Then he will stomp over the entire tour.

People mock him but even for Nadal and Djokovic it is near impossible to win longer rallies against him throughout a Bo5 match. They resort to net play and droppers.

Medvedev is the answer to stopping them .A very strong serve, impenetrable ground game, one of the best BH on tour . Just give him net game.

Honestly, what should happen there? Novak even lost a set in the first round, do you expect more against anyone outside Top 32? And Cressy looked good against FAA, but to see Djokodal having any trouble against him is far-fetched to say the least. Remember he lost to Jack Sock then.

He lost a set to a pretty average player. Had he faced say Kyrgios in R1 maybe he would have lost 3 sets. Maybe he would have won it and still reached the SF.

The point is that when I look at Novak/Rafa's draw this year I see that they have to play at a high level in 2-3 matches out of 7 and that could give them the title. It should be at-least 5. Rafa and Novak both didn't face any big server in the 1st 3 rounds, that is too easy a path in Wimb.

One Djokovic getaway from 0-2 and these topics emerge.
To cover it up, Nadal is also put in conversation. Truth is - you are more less ok with Nadal being above, but Djokovic taking the only place Fed was indestructible at :notworthy:

Few things can be done -
1. Make the time between serves to go below 15 seconds, will hurt the old ones
2. Don't allow much of toilet breaks
3. Make masters best of 5, so that young gen learns to play BO5
4. Make draws based on elo scores. No vulturing.

Well folks can wear masks so they don't default with Covid, and guys over 6'3" should wear preventative ankle braces (like Murray) so they don't need ankle surgery.

to be fair to the big 2 and realistic, change bo5 to bo4, if 2 sets all, play a super tiebreak for say 15 or any amount of points.

Wow! You read his mind, Emma Frost. :D

Yea, we felt the same way when Federer had zero competition and just kept winning everything, welcome to our world!

Don't you think Nadal and Djokovic have had more seasons with weak competition than Federer did?

By the way, it's good to see a poster from 2005 still here.

It's not just you. I would've been happy with Sinner beating Djokovic and Fritz beating Nadal. It would've made a lovely story.

And I'm a Nadal fan. But I'll also be happy if Nadal won W. ;)

So what you're actually asking is to replace BO5 format with BO5 format. BO4 or any other best of <insert any even number> format can't exist because that would mean matches could end in a tie with none of the players winning/losing.

People love the word “vulture“ on here. lol
Its called being the best, bud.

Clone 19 year old Sampras or Becker or 24 year old Lendl. Then the only slam Nadal or Djokovic would ever win again is Nadal at RG. The under-35 choking clownfest on tour now are laughably inept.

They will beat Djokodal in a baseline era with that one handed BH of 90s intresting.

- get rid of abusive toilet breaks (why wouldn't it cost a few points?)
- apply the rules without any mercy
- speed up the game and get back to contrasted conditions

PS: we really can't ban them?... that's not negociable?
