The Incredible Collapse Of Saggy Sock!

Just watched the Nads presser - he said seeing in form Sock looming in his draw caused stress and abdominal discomfort.
He also had too much Hot Sauce salsa with his tapas last night. Then he watched Edmund’s choke to Jacques Chaussette last year and realized he could not top that.

The saggy sock. Given Jack's name, we can only hope the sock is not also soggy.

I still give him a lot of hope. At his best, his game is electric, and a raw-boned American talent somewhere at or near the top of the game is crucial for the success of tennis in one of its biggest markets.

I hope he returns to form. It is clear there has been a lot going on for him this year because there have been some uncharacteristic angry outbursts on court which indicates his on court stress level is higher than it used to be. Give him a few years of doubles and he might refocus on singles when he is more mature, like what Stosur did.

Jacques has new elasticity in his Chaussettes, absolutely killing Jaziri early. He is fast becoming the Rick Blaine of the ATP! Play it again, Sam, bcoz I’ll always have Paris!

Jack putting it in overdrive to prevent the 'from Match for Africa with Roger' to 'I'm going to a challenger WHERE?' 2019 tour!

Kind of a pity, I was looking forward to seeing him at the local Fairfield challenger.

I watched Jack's presser, it was great:

Jack, what is it about France that elevates your game?

JS: I think it's the French cuisine. It is so good, it gives me so much energy. I mean, there are 1,300 McDonald's in France! They serve 1.8 million meals a day! Sometimes I have to click my heels together to remember I'm not in Kansas anymore!

Jack, who do you prefer to play next, Coric or Thiem?

JS: Well they are both great players and they both work out A LOT! Have you seen their abs? I mean, they have so many abs I think my abs might be hiding in their abs! To answer your question though, I'm going to go with Thiem because there are more McD's in Austria than Croatia.

In all (well, some) seriousness, how was Sock against Jaziri? That one highlight made him look actually quite quick, so I'm a bit confused. Jaziri's not the steadiest player on tour, so it's kinda hard to gauge Sock's level on the scoreline.

Also, Lachaussette is a much more convincing last name than Chaussette. Jacques Lachaussette could live in St-Isidore Québec. A name like Jacques Chaussette may only live in dreams.

Nadal’s withdrawal, combined with Coric wearing Thiem down yesterday, has given Jacques a premium opportunity pull up his saggy Chaussettes to defend a majority of his points from his run at Paris last year.

Jacques sags in the end and remains outside the top 100 as his singles season concludes. Looked good early but he was Thieminated in the end.

He looked good against Thiem, with chances to win. If he gets his fitness in order for 2019, there's no reason he's not top20, if not top10. His lethal FH, awesome netgame, and variety should easily take him there in this climate. Fitness is his main undoing imo. Afterall, DelpPo got to top3 with a lethal FH, good serve, and variety.

Fitness and a backhand.

Fitness and a backhand.

Agreed that his BH could be better. But I was suggesting that even with his current BH, he'd still be top20 at least if he brought his fitness up to snuff (bc DelPos BH isn't much better atm). Had his fitness been up to par, he might've beaten Thiem in 2 today, and a much better chance winning in 3.

Saggy Sock update...the USTA issued their reciprocal WC to AO’18 based on the most points earned in two of the three autumn weeks when indoor HC tournaments are hosted by American cities. Until 2017, those points had to be earned in those American Challenger tournaments only but, in a prescient move (I know, USTA is not very prescient too often) they expanded the tournament roll to include Paris/Bercy and several foreign Challengers. If that rule applies this year, the 180 points Jacques Chaussette picked up puts him firmly in charge of the race for the WC.

It’s sad for Tommy Paul, who won the Charlottesville Challenger and 80 points. Even another title won’t do him any good.

I’m wondering how aware Jacques was of that status???

Thread bumpity...now 0-2 on the Pull Up Your Socks, Jack tour. Straight set loss to Thompson (5&3) at D.C. as a WC.

In the next three months all of Sock's current ATP point will age off. If he wants to continue to be a professional singles player he had better go back to the Challenger tour and try to get some wins.

USTA is perpetually intoxicated to make Paul qualify while Eubanks and Sock skate in for free.

On what basis? I heard there was a guy who was higher ranked than most of the WC players and he didn't get the wc

But, that's the whole point of a wild card system - it's right in the name. The tournament has no duty to give wildcards to just the highest ranked non-direct entries. It's truly a "wild" card. So, they pass them out to a variety of players - maybe some of but not all of the highest ranked players who are not direct entries, young up and comers who are buzzed about (like Gauff), older players past their prime as good will for their years of "service," players whose ranking slipped due to injuries and are playing again but not ranked high enough.

I don't think any player should think he or she has a right to a wild card just because they're ranked closest to the cut off point for direct entries. Some of those players will get WCs, but plenty won't.

They should have given Sock a WC into qualifying. At this point I don't see how he can win a main draw match. In qualifying he would at least have a chance to get a win or maybe two. The only benefit to the main draw WC is he gets a pay day.

HIs only real path back is to learn to play tennis again at the Challenger level.

Wasted away again in federerville

Looking for my lost top 100 rank.

Some people claim there’s a Gulbis to blame

But I know I know it’s my own damn tank
This is pretty impressive. Nice job man. that Gulbis part is priceless...

Is it me or does sock just have too much wind up?

If the Bryan bros hadn’t got back together he could have won multiple more GS doubles titles. Hard to work out on what basis he got a WC into the singles.

Sock loses in straight sets to #53 Pablo Cuevas

Sock loses 45 point from last year's US Open and will drop from #178 to around #210

Time for Challengers or maybe Futures

Well he's signed up for the Oracle Challenger in New Haven, having anticipated an early loss at the US Open. Hopefully I'll get to see him in action there.

Win a MS1000 title, play deep into WTF, reach top10, all in 2017 and now collapse to an 8-23 record in 2018!

Where is the bottom after climbing near the top? I feel for the guy, having seen the similar collapse just four years ago of the guy who stuck a fork in him today from a set down, the Lord Ernests.

Can he find his singles game again or will he focus on top 10 dubs results?

Discuss or Disgust, as you wish.

I hope he gets it together. I met his brother at the BB&T and the dude is cool as hell. I watched him play with Jack in 17 there. The brother(Eric) I think brought me and my wife cokes while we were watching Jack play doubles and then turned around later and brought me another burger out of the blue. Pretty cool I thought for not ever having seen me or didn't know me from a can of paint.

I'm sure everyone involved in your story are good people but the Socks might be a bit too relaxed about weight management and a few other things to make it in a sport like this.

Of course they are. I said he brought me a burger. I never said anything about him eating one...and for the record...I don't make a habit of eating them, but these were different.lol I forget the name of the place but I'm going to make my way there at some point. Eric appeared to be in good shape.

Is Eric the brother that nearly died a few years ago? If so, he contracted a rare virus of some kind and was in the hospital ICU for a long while.

I don't know...I referred to him as Jack's brother when we started talking...and he stood there and held such a long conversation, hell...I forgot to ask him what his name was. I know he's the brother that played in the BB&T with him a few years ago(I think 2017).

Why does he keep getting these main draw wild cards? It's so unfair to other players.
I went to Five Guys the other day and suffered from jaw-dropping sticker shock...a cheeseburger cost $9 and change. Add in the GOAT fries and you’re closer to $13.

Jack likes cheeseburgers, Nebraska/Kansas boy that he was.

I am really beating this dead horse but just so everyone is aware ... Jack will have 0 ATP points after October at the rate he is going

He won 2 slams with Mike Bryan last year, a slam with Pospisil in 2014 and a mixed dubs slam with Melanie Oudin in 2011. He also won gold at Rio’16 in mixed with BMS and a bronze with Steve Johnson that week.
