The "Jean" Genie Bouchard reaches her first 4th round

She's playing very well and I would put her favorite vs Dellacqua in the 4th round to reach her first Quarters of a slam.

This time last year I wouldn't know who Miss Bouchard is if you told me "Who is she", Downton Abbey star character maybe...now she's garnered the spotlight on her mainly because of the fact she's a good player, she grabbed the spotlight.

I feel at this moment unless Laura Robson evolves her game, Sloane and Genie are the top ten talent within the next 2 years. Players are developing later and peaking later so in theory anyone in the top hundred who's been born from 1993 and earlier has a chance at the top.

I'm not a hype guy but I dig her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGQo6zpVzt8

She's one on which WTA is certainly putting serious stock on in terms of PR, as she's definitely classy and a fighter.

It's nice to see the Aussies get behind her. In terms of PR potential, as a French Canadian, her English is flawless which can only benefit her. Go Genie.

Actually English is her mother tongue, and she's trained in Florida. She's born in a English part of Québec. She does speak some French, but a fluent French speaker can tell it's not her first language. Tiny accent too. She seems to speak French as well as Federer does, which is not bad. They say her parents' French is flawless though.

The WTA is investing in her by using her as pr because they know she has that rare star quality.

You mean because she's good looking, like the next Sharapova or something?

Or because of her actual tennis skills?

I heard Eugenie identifies more as a Anglo Canadian than French Canadian. Of course, Eugenie can speak French but she identifies more with English Canada.

Because she is nice looking, articulate and has some tennis potential. A good package for the WTA to promote.

Extremely pretty tennis players often opt for the glamorous celebrity life style over the tough grinding touring pro life style.

That is an extremely sexist and untrue statement. First of all, there are not a lot of extremely pretty tennis players to speak of and secondly, Sharapova and Ivanovic are two of the prettiest active tennis players and they are far from opting for a glamorous celeb lifestyle over the tough grinding of the tour. Nobody is a harder worker than Sharapova despite her endorsement success.

Ivanovic - I would say an exception.
Sharpova - I don't find her attractive - however she works hard at projecting the glamours look.
The only other pretty person that won a grand slam was very attractive was Gabriella Sabatini.
2 maybe 3 attractive ladies in the last 30 years.
What tennis only attracts women that are not that good looking...I don't think so.

Disclaimer: By pretty I am talking about Model/Movie Star type looks - extremely attractive. Not that other women players are not attractive in their own way.

Bah,it's all subjective anyway. Strip the makeup off those movie stars and most of them look like sh*t. I don't find Sabatini attractive and I find Sharapova very attractive,so who's right me or you?

Very true - make up is scary

Yes, agreed make up does make them look great.
Say we are both right - we are still only talking about 2 players. It's very difficult to be invited to all the parties and photo shoots and still show up and practice. I will give credit to Sharpova for doing this - she does live the celebrity life style and still maintain her level of play.

I've noticed locally Bouchard has been on talk shows, doing the weather etc. etc. Maintaining focus on tennis will get more difficult as she goes up in ranking.

interesting. imo she looks bland like most canadians... shes def got the game and age though

Pardon me? We're a very diverse group.

And don't forget...still waters run deep...

Genie is great for Canada and even better for tennis. Let's get more talented women tennis players some publicity!!

isn't it her burfdayy around about now ?,

we should wish her a happy 20th burfdayy..:) (even if its on another day:twisted:)

She wouldn't be getting half the attention if she wasn't attractive and Canadian. The English speaking media have been overrating young tennis stars for years. I hate to be the doomsayer but I don't think she has the firepower to win a slam.

There are other players who are her age in the draw that haven't been getting as much attention: Diyas, Svitolina, Muguruza. In my opinion, someone like Simona Halep has been much more impressive but the media acts like she doesn't exist.

She'll still do that stuff when she comes to Canada...

If don't have the looks and/or the personality you don't get the public's interest in WTA. And it helps to be a fluent English language speaker.

Muguruza is really pretty and has a lot of potential. I think she'll be the next one to get fed to the hype machine. I hope she and genie are able to keep their focus and tune out the negative part of that.

Well, going from #140+ to GS seed (end year ranking of #32, seed [30] in AO) in her first full year on the main tour (which means not junior tourneys at all) also helps. Just a little.

I don't especially like her nor can understand the hype (I'm very slow when it comes to hype TBH); but you say that like she did nothing at all worth noting on court. Seems she actually did.

Bouchard is the real deal. Future top 5 or higher. Hope she can match the achievements of another Quebec born great...Mary Pierce.

Bouchard really has a chance of beating Ivanovic, as she beat her at Wimbledon 6-3 6-3. The stars seem to be aligned in her favor, with Serena having been beaten.
