The Laureus Awards have *withdrawn* Jannik Sinner’s nomination for Sportsman of the year [!]

“Following discussions by the Laureus Academy it has been decided that Jannik Sinner’s Nomination for this year’s Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award is to be withdrawn. We have followed this case, the decisions of the relevant global bodies and - whilst we note the extenuating circumstances involved - feel that the three-month ban renders the nomination ineligible. Jannik and his team have been informed.”

How did he get nominated?
Djokovic won it in 2023, and Sinner's 2024 was overall not that inferior to Djokovic's 2023.

In general, the big three have won this recognition about ten times.
Tennis players have a certain weight in these individual awards, being interpreters of the most popular individual sport in the world.
There is nothing strange to see among the candidates someone who dominated 2024 (see the gap in the rankings over the others) with a record of 73-6, two slams, the ATP Finals and 3 masters 1000.
Then I repeat, she was racing for second place given that Pogacar's 2024 is unattainable, one of the most impressive single seasons in the history of sport.

But is there no sportsmanship component to the ‘Sportsman of the Year’ award? Sinner has been embroiled in this failed drug test controversy for many months now.

I don't know, I think so, but in fact it needs to be clarified.

Sinner was not a candidate but a potential candidate.
The nominees will be announced on March 3 in Madrid after a jury of 1,300 experts cast their votes.

This press release specifies in advance the reason why Sinner will not be part of the candidates, given that everyone would have taken his inclusion for granted.

No winning is one thing. Suffering the humiliation of being "struck off" the eligibility list is another.
Humiliation, call it what you want, due to the sensational carelessness of Ferrara and Naldi.

You should call them and thank them.

However he will win it next year, MARK IT (and I rarely make a prediction wrong).

Shohei Ohtani should win for the 50/50
Lol

Tell me you know nothing about cycling and you'll be forgiven.

Pogacar is by far the best athlete in the world at the moment, with the second coming in tenth.

Having said that for me Pogacar will be first and Duplantis second.

If I ever accidentally learned something about "cycling," I would hit my head against the wall until I forgot what it was.

Instead it is a beautiful sport, but I understand that in the United States despite the resonance of Lemond and Armstrong (before the scandal) it is a sport with little tradition.
Furthermore, the big races are held in Europe at times that are inconvenient for you.

That said, what Pogacar did in 2024 would be almost the equivalent of a tennis player winning the CYGS without losing a single set in each of the 4 slams, just to give you an idea.

Let me tell you, even when Lance was at his peak, no one here really cared.

By the way, what you describe is not all that dissimilar to the season Shohei Ohtani had by baseball standards.

But it's okay, it's a question of tradition, the cradle of cycling is Europe.

For example, here in Europe no one cares about baseball, few are passionate about American football, while basketball is obviously one of the most popular sports precisely because it had a strong hold on the old continent right from the start, even before the global spread of the NBA thanks to the Lakers vs Celtics/Magic vs Bird rivalry, and the subsequent advent of Jordan, the Barcelona 1992 Dream Team, etc.

Here in Italy, cycling was the only sport capable, albeit for a short period, of displacing soccer as the most popular sport.
When the Italian national football team won one of the two World Cups in the 1930s, the news in the newspapers of the time took a back seat to a normal Giro del Lazio.

That's all well and good, to each his own.

You are talking complete nonsense to cover the national embarrassment of having the world's greatest drug cheat.

Wasn't everyone doping in cycling then though, to be fair? That's much better than Sinner being the lone doper atop tennis.

I'm familiar with some famous cyclists, but had never heard of Pogacar before this thread. Maybe 2024 is too recent -- it takes longer than that for a rep to trickle over here. Still, if he's the favorite for a prestigious athletic award, I suppose it's better that he be a cyclist than an F1 driver.

He won the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France in the same year, a feat that seemed impossible in modern cycling, all with unprecedented power.
But above all he won the world championship with all eyes on him, starting -100 from the finish line.
Solo feats that have characterized his 2024, when he attacks they see him directly at the finish line again.

Armstrong won this recognition several times before it was taken away after the scandal, a cyclist who based his entire season solely on the Tour de France.
Imagine then Pogacar, someone who wins literally everywhere.
Net of doping, Armstrong was to the current Pogacar what a Murray is to Djokovic.

Give this unknown until today trivial award to another top 20 player who won't win a slam this year. I'm sure it'll be on display in glass casing.
oh my, the tears are non-stop, give Jannik a towel from Djokovic's former trainers.

Unlucky. Hope Rafa wins.

Just look at this...how knee deep is Sinner paying the establishment? Avoided so many things and got a "ban" during a period in the calendar where there's no grand slam tennis.

Disgusting.

Who cares about these Mickey Mouse awards. They mean absolutely nothing. Sinner got the YE-#1 in 2024 and he deserved it, no matter what happened.

What should be taken away from him now is the 13 weeks he's spending at number #1 while he's banned. They robbed an innocent player of 24 weeks in 2020 because of a virus. A banned player shouldn't be getting more weeks at number #1. The number #2 (in this case Zverev) should be awarded these weeks.

Someone like David Letterman should take Sinner interview like this. lol

What is it that you did? Do you know what you did.
LMAO

Not some curated BS @Winner Sinner is spamming with

I see you are attacking this poster, even though you liked just about every post he made before he made the Djokovic hypocrisy thread lol
