The magnitude of Nadal's achievement

First off congratulations to Nadal for his 12th RG and 18th slam!

We have witnessed quite unreal dominance being continued today. Nadal has now won 50% more titles at RG than the next highest total at any of the other slams in men's tennis (Federer's 8 Wimbledons). He has won double the next highest total at RG (Borg's 6 RG). Even if Borg had played RG 1977 and had carried on a few more years, he was never going to reach 12.

And again, just a couple of sets lost. Yes he didn't have the hardest draw, but no one would blame him for having a few close matches at 33 years old. But he didn't. Not really even close.

Nadal's 12 RG may be the most impressive single achievement in men's tennis history. I don't think it makes him GOAT but it gives him a decent argument.

Great post man. Would have a beer with u :)

Yeah, congrats to the man and the fans.
3 in a row now, Another streak in the making? At this point nothing would be surprising to me.
He's now had streaks of 4 then 5 and now 3. I could definitely see it stretching to at least 4. I think someone posted the other day about how amazing it is that Sampras managed a streak of 3 then 4 at Wimbledon. Nadal has done that with a streak of 5 on top of that. And counting!

Well said.

I think there is an argument to be made that Nadal's record at Roland Garros is the greatest achievement in SPORTS history, not just tennis (I've seen some great athletes in other sports like Luke Donald and Dirk Nowitzki acknowledge how unbelievable 12 French Opens are on twitter).

The slam record will be broken (probably by Nadal himself). I can't see anyone ever replicating what Nadal has done at the French.

Quite possibly right. I don't know enough about the other 'unbeatable' sports records to compare with this one so I'm not sure. But certainly in terms of tennis, I really doubt I'll see someone else win 12 titles at a single slam in my life time.

The reality is that even if we took out Nadal and Djokovic as Wimbledon GOAT Federer's competition at Wimbledon, he would still not have reached 12 titles and would only be on 11 titles there. And he's 37 with one of the most impressive longevities of all time. So that just shows how difficult it would be to emulate Nadal's achievement. And he could well win even more

Fixed it for you.

It's a terrible advert for the game. Clay is the dominion of one man only. Unfortunately, the grass is not grass, and the hard court is not hard court. There is a terrible skew being overlooked because if nominal numbers.

Weak tennis era coinciding with weak education era? No coincidence.

Classy post. (y)
This indeed is one of the biggest achievements for sure. It doesn't make him the GOAT, but it cements his place to be in the GOAT conversation. Federer still is the best in history.

Good to see some magnanimous Federer fans posting... Great that we can celebrate this historic achievement for its greatness

Thanks for the classy post
All the best for Roger at Wimbledon(y)

It is epic and full of wings. Great scenes.

His RG record both helps and harms his argument for GOAT-hood. He's never defended a non-clay Slam, Joe Kovic has the best claim to GOAT-hood at this stage of the game if he can add 3-4 more over the next few years.
