The most arm-friendly string, besides natural gut

Hi guys,

My dad's got a tennis elbow. So I advised him to buy an arm-friendly racket, Prince EXO3 Tour 16x18.

Off course I advised him to get an arm-friendly string as well. I know gut is the most arm-friendly, but my stringing machine 'bruises' natural gut too much.

So which are the most arm-friendly strings besides Natural Gut? I know from my own experience that Babolat Xcel is very arm-friendly, but I would like to know more strings, so I can choose a good one suited for his game.

Thanks in Advance!

Wilson NXT (Max or control) are close to natural gut.

As for your machine bruising the natural gut too much: my stringer waxes the crosses before feeding them through the grommets, have you tried that?

And manual pre-stretching of course.

Chances are you father may not break a quality natural gut (Babolat VS, Wilson) in months, so you may want to try one (at lower then usual tennis if he's got tennis elbow, i.e. 50-52 LBs, then bumped it up when he's healthy).

No I didn't try waxing them. But with bruising I meant the little brown spots my machine created, caused by the head tensioner, I'm not sure we're talking about the same problem, since it happens on the mains as well...

Thanks, I'll take his top 3 comfort strings in consideration

I'm currently play testing Ashaway Monogut ZX 1.27mm Red. It is right there with my favorite all time main (poly) of Weiss Cannon Black 5 Edge with a multi cross. Very powerful yet controllable, durable and does not bug my arm.

BTW, sounds like your tensioner just needs to be adjusted. Full natural gut won't last too long in the Exo Tour 16x18 which is my current stick. Gut mains and multi crosses will last a long time though. I cut out one set of crosses and inserted another and the gut mains were still lasting.

The Exo Tour is a string breaker, so most multis are not going to last long in it for string breakers.

Forten Sweet 16g is soft, durable and plays consistently during its whole life. At $3 a set you can't get a better deal.

What do you mean by adjusting the tensioner?

You replaced just the crosses, interesting, but does this work if you start you crosses with a (bulky) starting knot? Or do you need to start with a starting clamb so you can use a normal finishing knot? I my mind it wasn't possible to replace the crosses because of the knots

Your tensioner should be able to adjust to clamp down less tight on the string. What model stringer do you have?

I've never tried cutting out just the crosses until this year. I'd read about others doing it. Since it is my racket, I bear all risk of damage anyways. I do use a starting clamp and not a bulky knot.

I've got a tyger stingEco-45 which I think is only available in the Netherlands.

Not possible with my machine I guess, serves me right for being cheap :(

for replacing the crosses only: put your stick into the machine and fix it (hopefully 6 points), then cut the crosses. on the knots you can try and pull at the knot towards the center of the stringbed with some pliers - carefully of course! next you have to fiddle around a little bit to undo the knot, which can be done by means of an awl trying to losen up the knot or by carefully cutting through the string (not the mains obviously :)!).

and yes, best advice on arm-freindly strings is in mikeler's thread.

Yes I agree...

Ashaway Monogut ZX is an extremely arm-friendly synthetic string made from PEEK. The string bed will hold tension longer than Nylon. On the TW sting finder, it is only bested by Natural Gut strings in the arm-friendliness category.

I've got 5 packs of this in the red 17 guage version in the string trades thread if anyone's interested. It's just not a good fit in my current choice of frame.
