I'd still never heard of him.
That's not how statistics work!
Probably the majority of British people have never heard of Rafael Nadal. That doesn't mean that he's not a famous sportsman!
Europe =/= The World.
And I disagree. Clearly a view giving you that perception via your media.
You are showing your ignorance on the subject here. The major English and Spanish clubs have worldwide fanbases of hundreds of millions of people.
The European Cup is followed passionately throughout the world. Each continent have their own equivalent, but have nowhere near the popularity within their own continents as the European Cup does, with the possible exception of the South American Copa Libertadores. Even then, there are loads of fans of European clubs in South America, whereas there are virtually no fans of South American clubs in Europe.
In terms of quality, the best players in the world are heavily centralised at a few top European clubs.
Ask people from Nigeria, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia, Brazil, etc. to name a ''Raphael'', and they are more likely to name Varane than Nadal. In fact the most likely answer will be ''I can't think of anybody named Raphael''.
So you go on about how it's meant to be world famous then make turn-coat style excuses to cover your ass. No, he isn't the most famous Raphael in the world today and no, "football" (which is SOCCER) isn't the most famous or celebrated sport today worldwide.
Delusional at best.
How is that remotely a ''turncoat'' statement?
Raphael Varane will have the plurality of ''Raphael'' name recognition amongst people worldwide. It's as simple as that. The fact that you're disputing this makes me wonder what kind of bubble you must be living in.
Football is overwhelmingly the most popular sport in the world. Even in the few countries where it's not the most popular sport, it still has a strong presence.
Athletics is the only other sport with worldwide ubiquity, but very few people are interested in it, outside of Olympic years.
