Hall of Fame
Raphael - Legendary Italian Renaissance painting master.
Raphael - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.
Rafael Benitez - Illustrious Spanish football manager.
Archangel Raphael - Important figure in Christian, Judaic, and Islamic scripture.
Rafael Nadal - Nephew of famous Barcelona footballer, Miguel Angel ''The Beast'' Nadal.

Raphael Varane probably has the biggest worldwide recognition, but I thought that he might be a little too niche for this forum's audience.

This poll results are inadequate! I am sure that outside of these boards and tennis communities in general both TMNT one and the painter are more famous Rafaels, than Nadal...

Yeah, a soccer player.

He was a member of the France side that won the World Cup, earlier in the year. I imagine that this year's World Cup Final was the most watched television event in history.

He's also been a part of the Real Madrid team that have won 3 European Cups in a row. The European Cup (Champions League) is by far the most popular yearly sporting tournament in the world.

It's fair to say that in terms of raw numbers, he's the most famous ''Raphael'' in the world today.

This forum has a lot of Americans, who aren't exactly famed for their passion for football. And there's nothing wrong with that. There are also a number of snobs on this forum who probably don't like football because they consider it to be ''plebeian''.

I'd still never heard of him.

Europe =/= The World.

And I disagree. Clearly a view giving you that perception via your media.

Not really.

So you go on about how it's meant to be world famous then make turn-coat style excuses to cover your ass. No, he isn't the most famous Raphael in the world today and no, "football" (which is SOCCER) isn't the most famous or celebrated sport today worldwide.

Delusional at best.

I'd say that Nadal is more famous than Varane because he gets more direct exposure. When Nadal wins the French Open, the headline will read, "Nadal wins French Open", whereas when Varane wins the World Cup, it says, "France win World Cup".

The point is that there are large swathes of the world where tennis is a tiny sport, and people like Roger and Rafa are unknowns. Whereas there aren't too many parts of the world where football isn't followed or known about.

Even so he's not necessarily the most celebrated or stated member of the France or Real Madrid team, just by sheer numbers and worldwide interest levels, Varane must be more famous than Nadal.

I would say that Nadal would be well-known by non-tennis fans, too, given that he is one of the greatest ever practitioners of the sport. I'm not a fan of golf, and yet I could tell you that Tiger Woods is a successful player. I don't watch basketball, yet I still recognise names like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, because they, like Nadal, are some of the biggest names in their respective fields.

Varane, meanwhile, is not as recognisable a name, because he is rarely up for individual awards. He has never been close to receiving a Ballon d'Or, nor has he been given an individual award at a major international tournament. Even for those around the world who watch football, he may not be a household name - firstly because he is a defender, and defenders will usually receive less recognition than their attacking counterparts, and given that he is not frequently involved in the creation of goals, he isn't going to be a guy who people take notice of when flicking through lists of goalscorers, for instance.

I'd still never heard of him.

That's not how statistics work!

Probably the majority of British people have never heard of Rafael Nadal. That doesn't mean that he's not a famous sportsman!

Europe =/= The World.

And I disagree. Clearly a view giving you that perception via your media.

You are showing your ignorance on the subject here. The major English and Spanish clubs have worldwide fanbases of hundreds of millions of people.

The European Cup is followed passionately throughout the world. Each continent have their own equivalent, but have nowhere near the popularity within their own continents as the European Cup does, with the possible exception of the South American Copa Libertadores. Even then, there are loads of fans of European clubs in South America, whereas there are virtually no fans of South American clubs in Europe.

In terms of quality, the best players in the world are heavily centralised at a few top European clubs.

Not really.

Ask people from Nigeria, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia, Brazil, etc. to name a ''Raphael'', and they are more likely to name Varane than Nadal. In fact the most likely answer will be ''I can't think of anybody named Raphael''.

So you go on about how it's meant to be world famous then make turn-coat style excuses to cover your ass. No, he isn't the most famous Raphael in the world today and no, "football" (which is SOCCER) isn't the most famous or celebrated sport today worldwide.

Delusional at best.

How is that remotely a ''turncoat'' statement?

Raphael Varane will have the plurality of ''Raphael'' name recognition amongst people worldwide. It's as simple as that. The fact that you're disputing this makes me wonder what kind of bubble you must be living in.

Football is overwhelmingly the most popular sport in the world. Even in the few countries where it's not the most popular sport, it still has a strong presence.

Athletics is the only other sport with worldwide ubiquity, but very few people are interested in it, outside of Olympic years.

Sorry Nadal but turtles win here.

Kids nowadays have no idea how big TMNT was. God I feel old lol.

But you are obviously a fan of at least one sport, so you will have likely intentionally consumed sports media, which is probably where you gained knowledge of these players from other sports.

I don't really follow pop music, and I had never heard of Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, or One Direction until I started browsing Reddit in 2017. These are huge names in their field and modern pop culture. It's statistically impossible that I wouldn't have previously seen these artists/acts referenced in news media, on the television, or amongst friends and colleagues. Yet apparently my brain never stored these references as memories.

I agree that Varane is an understated member of the celebrated teams which he is involved in, and isn't exactly a ''household name'', but there's a greater likelihood that people will know him, rather than Nadal.

"football" (which is SOCCER) isn't the most famous or celebrated sport today worldwide.

Your most ignorant post I've read. Football is the biggest by far! FIFA World cup is even bigger than the Olympics.

And it is football. Not Aussie style handballs or American handballs. Those sports don't have much to do with your foot and more to do with your hands.

Real ignorant.

Here in Sydney where I live soccer is barely even mentioned lmao.

Then you need to get out of your little village of Sydney more often.
Or that whole side of Australia more like it.

Sydney?!?! A little village?!? You do realize how big Sydney really is, right? That's the most ignorant post I've ever seen from you before.

So which sport is the most famous today then?

Raphael - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.
Rafael Benitez - Illustrious Spanish football manager.
Archangel Raphael - Important figure in Christian, Judaic, and Islamic scripture.
Rafael Nadal - Nephew of famous Barcelona footballer, Miguel Angel ''The Beast'' Nadal.
None of those. It has to be Raphael, the Spanish singer. Escándalo.

@Sabratha Football is undeniably the most famous sport. Just search for the ratings for El Classico , CL final, WC cup final.

Approx 900 million people watched Germany beat Argentina in 2014 WC final

That's more than anything any other sport is capable of.Maybe adding their biggest events together won't fetch that number.

Not only in Europe also in Some countries where it had no previous presence it has grown a lot.

Even in India where Cricket is more than a religion it has steadily gained ground and now most youngsters are drawn more to Football than Cricket.

I'm done arguing this anyway. If I'm the only one arguing the point I'm making 9 times out of 10 I'm wrong.

So yeah.

Let's just say I was a kid who grew up in the "football" fad era and didn't like it too much. I wasn't too bad at soccer and enjoyed playing it but never really liked watching it.

Tennis has always been my sport.

I too had a similar situation. The only sport I ever liked was tennis .
I grew up in the India 's Sachin era(You are Australian so I expect you to know Some international Cricket) And I absolutely hated Cricket. Basically sports meant Cricket and nothing else.

Cricket is a big sport here too, yes. But India has always been above Australia when it comes to that sport. Some of the best batsmen I've seen have played for India.

For one Shane Warne is overrated. The guy was a good fast bowler but some of the stuff I've seen from India eclipses him for sure.

Britain is also as good as Australia at cricket. Maybe even slightly better.

You got your Cricket A bit wrong here.
Since mid 1990s till 2015 Aussies were the most dreaded and most lethal Team. They basically had invincible runs in early to mid 2000s.Basically the GOAT Team .

But Yes presently India and England are in much better form .

It's probably more of what you said before. Having something shoved down your throat to the point that it gets tiring and you start finding ways to discredit such thing, etc. LOL.
