The most hated sportsmen in the world, featuring Nick Kyrgios (The Telegraph)

Cricket: David Warner
Abrasive, arrogant, Australian. Warner ticks all the boxes for a cricketing pantomime villain. His status as the sport's leading persona non grata was enshrined after he punched Joe Root in a Birmingham Walkabout bar after taking offence at the England batsman wearing a wig on his chin. Warner admitted this year that "I probably let my aggression and alcohol take over". Worse than the Walkabout set-to was arguably Warner saying "speak English" to Indian batsman Rohit Sharma during a one-day international in Melbourne earlier this year. Classy.

Athletics: Justin Gatlin
It's not just that Gatlin has twice been banned for doping, it's the American's utter lack of contrition that really riles lovers of the sport. In fact, Gatlin seems to relish his role as the sport's Public Enemy No 1, and after a recent win in Doha, he turned his fingers into pistols and pretended to shoot at the TV camera. The fact that the American may now be benefitting from his past steroid use means he continues to be pressed on his previous misdemeanours - accusations he dismisses with typical nonchlanace. When asked back in May if he would admit to taking performance enhancing drugs, Gatlin replied: “There is no admitting to it. If you are a history major you can go back in the archives and read those articles.” “Why do I need to change [my explanation],” he then asked. “Why are you asking these questions that happened a decade ago?”

Football: Pepe
In the partisan and parochial world of football, it's tough to find a consensus on the most loathsome individual. But you would be hard pushed to find many supporters who can stomach Pepe, who manages to incorporate into his game a wonderful range of quite detestable antics. When not kicking opponents while they're on the floor (as he did in 2009 to Getafe's Javi Casquero having just pushed him to the ground), the Portuguese defender can be found committing niggly fouls, waving imaginary cards or diving and then doing that insufferable thing of feeling around his face to check for blood, when clearly there is no blood there. There is never any blood there.

Tennis: Nick Kyrgios
The badboy of tennis took his sinking reputation to a new low at the Montreal Masters on Wednesday when he engaged in an extraordinary sledge at opponent Stan Wawrinka. The Aussie wildchild could be clearly heard saying "Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend. Sorry to tell you that, mate” as the players changed ends during the second set of a highly charged encounter. The claim was a reference to Thanasi Kokkinakis, who has played mixed doubles with Donna Vekic, believed to be seeing Wawrinka. Kyrgios has been no stranger to controversy since bursting onto the scene last year, and at this year's Wimbledon he was roundly condemned for throwing a game against Richard Gasquet when he clearly stopped trying, and slamming a racquet that landed in the crowd. That was on top of the usual swearing, ******** and stropping around the court like a disgruntled teenager.

Rugby union: Quade Cooper
The cocksure fly-half is never short of an opinion or two, and his spat with New Zealand captain Richie McCaw in 2011 meant he went down even further in many people's estimation. Cooper shoved his knee into a prone McCaw's face during a heated Tri-Nations match, and the incident played into the perception of Cooper as a sly, nasty piece of work. He's also openly critcised his country's coaching staff and last month launched a tirade on Twitter against a supporter who had criticised his performance during the Wallabies’ victory over Argentina in the Rugby Championship. Cooper, who had been sin-binned in the match charmingly wrote "Invite me to you're next team discussion then ask me how much I give a f--- about your team selection? Zero f---s given.”

Golf: Patrick Reed
The pugnacious American angered supporters at last year's Ryder Cup when he put his fingers to his lips and shushed the crowd after an impressive putt on hole 7. Reed became so unpopular that it was said he'd need a police escort to get out of Gleneagles, and his shushing celebration quickly started trending on Twitter. Reed then found himself the subject of the public's ire again only two months later when in November 2014 he was heard using a homphobic slur in an expletive-laden rant at himself. “Nice f***ing three-putt, you f***in’ ******,” Reed was picked up by the microphone as saying at Shanghai's WGC-HSBC Champions tournament.

Formula One: Pastor Maldonado
The Venezuelan crashes his car so frequently that a website has been set up called 'Has Maldonado Crashed Today?', which has a ticker counting how long it's been since his most recent crash (currently at 38 days). The man nicknamed ‘Crashtor’ by his critics claims he is unfairly treated, and he claimed in a Telegraph interview earlier this year that: “When the other people crash, there is no news. It’s like this. To find the limit, you need to cross the limit. I think I have the big balls to cross the limit every time. They were the good things in my career. I have been winning in everything in the past."

Horse racing: Kieren Fallon
The 50-year-old jockey has been involved in a number of controversies, includeing allegations of "Conspiracy to Defraud" and being given an 18-month riding suspension for taking a banned substance. Fallon is still trying to rebuild his career, but admitted in March that he is struggling for rides.

Rugby league: Gareth Hock
Hock has developed a reputation as Rugby league's foremost rebel, and it's not hard to see why he is almost universally disliked. The Leigh Centurions second row has been banned for two years for cocaine use, served a six-match suspension for using his knees when at Salford, been kicked out of England’s World Cup squad and collected three bans for making contact with referees.

Boxing: Floyd Mayweather Jnr
Whether it's those preposterous Instagram shots of him lying in bed with wads of cash, or claims of being 'The best ever', Mayweather is exceptionally hard to like. The American's unexciting style also frustrates supporters, and his choice of Andre Berto as his final opponent has been slated as a copout for a man who claims to have such unlimited confidence in his own ability. "

I like how he is his own man. I respect and like that and other qualities he has.
His very colorful history of domestic abuse and violence against women - including formal criminal charges and many victims, makes Mayweather Jr. more of a scumbag than the rest of this list combined. He is unabashedly a thug who preys on women and is devoid of the most basic moral principles. I can't believe there is anyone who respects this woman-beating criminal. If he weren't such a damn amazing boxer, this guy would be behind bars.

The best quote I've read about Mayweather was after he won the fight against Pacquio using his usual defense/evasion strategy. "The only time Mayweather ever goes on the attack is when he's bashing a woman."

That's what all Tyson fans say. :)

No doubt, comparing Tyson and Mayweather is comparing a turd to a ****stain. It's a shame the best boxers are such horrible people. The slight (extremely slight) different is that Tyson has gone through a brief period of repentance, whereas Mayweather is completely unrepentant.

We define tennis as competitive and competition is basically highly sublimated violence, so we can expect a lot of viciousness. Most just simply hide it better than others.

Listen, they did jail, they paid for their mistakes this is why I said recently. And recently I very much like Mayweather.

I have just finished making 10 voodoo dolls of Kyrgios. First 10 emails get them for free.

It's not like he grins and brags that he's a sweet man who wasn't punished in any way (like the similar passive-aggressive clowns of yesteryear - fed and Roddick). Slam trophies and slam finalists don't turn you into a sportsmanship hero either. As a matter of fact, the lucky wins can make a pompous con artist even more fake.
