...not that there's anything wrong with that (i.e. being obsessed with Broadway musicals, any musical).

I saw that movie a while back when it came out and thought it was the biggest waste of time ever, everyone had AIDS, and from what I could understand (which was very little), it was incredibly depressing.

Also, I didn't really need to see 2 guys kiss, either.

Skip rent and go see the original that the musical is (loosely) based on:
La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini.
Or get the DVD with Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni from San Francisco Opera. Pure musical genius.

Miss Saigon is based on an opera as well; Madam Butterfly (also by Puccini).
Same for the broadway Aida, which is based on Giuseppe Verdi's Aida.
