The new blade V7 May just be the best blade so far

Blade v7 is the real deal. I play tested TF40, Gravity Pro, Vcore Pro 97 HD, and Blade v7 and currently leaning to using the Blade v7 over my trusty 2015 Blade. It provides that extra plush feel while retaining what made the 2015 Blade a keeper: power, stability, control, and comfort all in a single racquet.

My preferred specs for all these racquets are 330-340 SW, 340 grams static weight, and about 6 pts HL balanced.
I’ve got mine set up at exactly 340 gm/12 ounces, and it feels like heaven hitting the ball. I want to just sit out there all day and hit, if it weren’t for the oppressive Florida heat and humidity I probably would.

Honestly do you guys really like the new blade or do you just want to like it? I thought it was just meh. You can sense the Clash technology which I hate-feels like a toy. Also I don't understand all the hype with the Pure strikes. They have a weird balance that can injure a wrist and it just feels sluggish. Now the Gravity mp is a different story imo. Loved the feel from everywhere on the court. Wanting to try the Pro

Tried the v7 16/19 and feel the same way you do. Meh. I also have a Clash 98 and I actually like it a lot more than the new Blade. Perhaps the v7 18/20 is a completely different animal?

I went to the Clash tour here at the USTA training center ( review on the Official Clash page 15, with photos). I hit with the Tour 100, I really didn’t care for it. This Blade plays nothing like that racquet to me. I’m not trying to sell anyone on the new Blade, so no “hype” from me, if you don’t like it well...tastes vary. According to most, I should have liked the Clash.

Of the 3 versions of the Clash sticks I tried (100, 100 Tour and 98), the 100 Tour was my least favorite. My leaded 100 and 98 are pretty close with the 98 offering a bit more control. The Blade v7 16/19 has some Clash characteristics, but the stringbed does have a disconnected feel while the stringbed on my Clashes offer more direct feedback.

I really liked the 2015 Blade 18/20 and was hoping the Blade v7 16/19 would feel similar and offer more maneuverability and whippiness with the high 320s SW. I got the improved maneuverability, but it was devoid of the familiar Blade feel. :(

I didnt love the 16x19. The 18x20 is the magic for me. I love it and its not pretend for me.

You mod all your Blades to this spec?

Anyone know an easy way to mod it to be more HL? I opened the butt cap but there's very little room to add weight...

You should be able to add at least a few grams of blue tack or high density lead tape in there. If not your options are 1. remove base grip and apply lead on the grip pallet or 2. scoop out some of the foam in the handle and replace with something heavier (e.g. fishing weight, silicone/resin, blue tack, etc.). Tsitsipas for example does option 2 with roughly 10 grams of resin I believe. 10 grams at the butt is roughly 3 points more headlight. Good luck!

I used needle nosed pliers to pull out the foam and then you’ll have plenty of room too add weight. I am up to 15 grams of Blue Stik inside there.

Any idea roughly how much the foam weighed? Did you pull it out of both hairpin chambers?
That foam is really light, almost no weight at all, maybe a gram or two and I took out probably an inch and a half from both chambers. I am used to 340 gram racquet(12oz), so that’s why. This racquet didn’t really need any weight in the hoop anywhere for my preference.

You can change to a heavier grip such as leather. Leather could add around 8-10g. You could also add around 3g to 7” from the butt cap so top of the handle approx. Or you can add weight under the grip. Easiest is at 7” spot. if you have extra grip rings, layer 3 or 4 of them.

Stupid question, do you put it on instead of the original grip or apply as an overgrip? (Never used a leather grip before)

Replace the original grip. Then you can also add overgrip if desired.

Alternatively, you can put in a heavy overgrip and see how it feels. According to this thread (https://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/index.php?threads/lets-gather-all-grip-specs-weight-thickness-into-one-thread.465717/) the Gamma Supreme overgrip can add up to 8g to the handle.

No, you take off the original synthetic grip and replace with the leather grip

340g/330-335 SW (depending on strings) is a great spec for the blade. Easily attainable with a little weight in handle. I like some lead wrapped at the top and blue tack under buttcap.

Heavy overgrips can ruin the bevel feel
So if you care about that get leather and use an og on top. Its amazing and an easy way to add weight to the handle and retain bevel feel.

Not a fan of the paint. Not a fan of the extended grip. Not a a fan of the black W on the butt cap. Hopefully my play test will be bad, too, because I really don't want to like this version.
So the OCD in me agree’s with this 100%, so much so that I swapped out the trap doors from my old Blades.

What do you prefer on this instead of the stock weight? Just curious if the racquet comes through faster due to the more hl balance or what changes there?

I feel like the blade in stock weight provides an advantage since it is lighter but im open to seeing what others experienced there.

That sums up every tennis gear rabbit hole I’ve been down. Hopefully it ends here, not sure how much more I can take! Love the stick so far though.

Probably comes down to personal preference. I was a long-time 6.1/pro staff player so I think I'm just more used to the HL balance. I notice the difference most on volleys/touch shots. For groundstrokes, either setup is great. I like the feeling of weight in the head - and the blade provides this whether stock or setup more HL.

Also possible that this setup is a little more muted than stock. I don't use a dampener fwiw.

Sorry, responded quickly before. He is a video showing how to do it. I love Oehms leather but they are a pain to get from Germany. Head leather is also good.

Thanks man. I'll probably grab the head one because Amazon and coming with it's own adhesive! I actually think I have leather under my TC95 that I bought used...

Here is my quick comparison after 2 hours of playing with V7 18x20 compared to 2015 18x20. Please note I haven't installed the leather grips on the new Blades yet, so they are 10g lighter. All my racquets are strung with 4G@24 kg. Been playing last three years with Blade 2015 18x20 with 4G.

V7 is easier to swing, has more power, more plush, better feel. The racquet feels soft, however not unstable at all. The swetspoot is huge. The biggest difference compared to 2015 is the feel, which translates to better volleys and drop shots. I feel though that 2015 produces "heavier ball" but is less forgiving. I haven't decided about control yet, but so far I would give 2015 a slight edge. It is not a big difference though.

Will play another 2h today and see if my initial impressions will change.

Hit with my RF97A yesterday but also have the Blade 18x20 v7 so able to draw some comparisons. I tail weighted the Blade with 8 grams of lead in the handle to make it more HL with a Wilson Pro over grip. The Blade is strung with Wilson syn gut at 50lbs and I’ve stopped using a dampner. The RF97A Is strung with Solinco Hyper-G at 50lb, but I used a dampner. The differences is obviously the stiffness with the RF97A being 66 and the Blade at 62, the weight and the string patterns. The Blade is a lot easy to swing, whereas with RF97A you’ve got to be super relaxed with no tension in your arm and let the racket do the work. I generally hit a flat eastern forehand and 1HBH and find it easier to attack short balls better with the Blade. With the RF97A, you really need to be meeting the ball well in front and finishing your strokes over your shoulder. I’m hitting again sometime in the next couple days so will remove the dampner from the RF97A to see if that makes a difference to make it feel less like a plank of wood :)
