The new narratives in tennis

When actual match results don’t go the way you wanted or expected it’s important to adapt. Here are some techniques (aka coping mechanisms):

  • Claim money won is the key indicator in measuring tennis achievements
  • Redefine CYGS so that players that lost the first slam of the season can be considered as equally likely to win as someone who won the first 3 slams of the season
  • talk about popularity contests. Is winning Miss Congeniality better than most weeks at #1? of course!
  • weak era discussions. This is one of the most classic approaches
  • if your favorite player can’t win actual matches surely he can do better in hypothetical ones
  • Injury and illness excuses are always welcome
  • forget what you posted in the past. Did you use to claim that weeks at #1 and most slams won were the key metrics? Or the H2h? Time for something new!

what else am I missing? ;)

Try this one: stop caring about what other people think if you're so secure in your beliefs.

Yeah and Onematchawayerer doesn't help with some his latest statements either. :(

Good work.
Just helping Fedal fans cope with the shock of a Novak reaching 20 and stopping Fed at WB and Nadal at the FO. Also maybe time to mentally prepare for Novak at 21?

Test

At this point the only unvanquished frontier is “my GOAT has a larger johnson than yours” - no one has yet stooped to using this narrative.

however - that rhetorical argument is basically what all the GOAT debates on here comes down to anyways.
According to this study of great geopolitical importance, the chances are:
Nole>Fed>Rafa

Well, Djoker could have won in Tokyo and New York and finished this thing off. He didn't. Fed could have hit a serve at 40-15. He didn't. Nadal could have bageled Djoker in the first set at RG and rolled once again. He didn't.

Triple 20 - the TTW game rolls on.

You made me laugh. But there is a beauty that all fandoms have something to stand on at least for now. Everyone is happy. I like it!
Antonio Puente - yup. I mean others could have finished it off as well but only 1 slam at a time. (It might turn out that 1 slam will separate them) but Tokyo and NY everyone would have to bow down. Now.. :D

If this just became apparent to you, you have missed decades of the tennis tour for the WTA and ATP. Fed fanatics foamed it up to a feverish lather after Rog cashing in the weak era and vulturing GS's to create what was thought to be an unattainable level, but seeing Nadal start beating him too often for comfort. As Nadal started posting new leading stats and making the new media catch-phrase and ATP rivalry hype advertising money making term GOAT a house hold appeal, Fed fanatic continually changed the narrative to maintain Fed stature. But then...from the biggest shadow ever cast in sports, this angry and arrogant player that people only dislike because he is Serbian and not because he is a tool start to again claim his own stats and enter the discussion as the third wheel of the next ATP money making term of the BIG 3, and narratives continually changed for the last several years as the overall stats began to level out with only subtle difference of players now becoming certain dominance! Djo's most epic fails at the Olympics and then the USO and just the latest.

Fanatical hype is rightly need as a coping mechanism and that is nothing new. So carry on.

MONEY but we seemingly cannot talk about it on TTW as a money thread has just been deleted. Oh, it also is the GOAT and CYGS talk, many such talks on these forums here. Keep at it here :)

Good work.
They are polluting this forum to be honest, even the so called “decent posters.” With all that he’s achieved they‘re spending their free time still running down Federer and Nadal and pushing the idea that Djokovic’s 3 slam season was so much better than any other. They’re bad enough now, they’d have been completely insufferable had he won it. Thank Med…

Back on topic and away from the poor moderating of TTW, I'd say that the Corporate Machine is destroying the sport. Seeing Emma Raducanu abused hurts for I know her focus and prep for what she really is good at under the, after the USO, circumstances cannot be there. Tiffany, Vogue etc. are using her to promote their own agenda which brings me down to the narratives in tennis-the money.

No new narratives from me, Novak's body of work already makes him the greatest of three as of right now (and he's very likely to add to it).

However, hypothetical match-up discussions have been a staple of every sport, ever (and I occasionally enjoy them). It's silly to argue like it's an exclusively Fed fan thing.

Oh and yeah, I certainly believe Fed was close to winning a CYGS in 2006. Don't care if people agree.

Laver cup biggest event in tennis and no mention?

The criteria I've always prioritised, maintained and will in the future for the GOAT debate are competition, h2h and versatility in order of importance, as they are objective and can be pretty reasonably well measured. Never really considered total counts if they were close enough and more projected numbers, as all achievements differ in difficulty and that I believe the cream eventually rises to the top as recently proven. Will hand in my account for deletion the day I resort to hypotheticals, the age excuse, etc.

For me:
Federer lost his GOAT status around USO17 as I knew Nadal was going to hang around
Nadal was the GOAT after USO19, RG20 and even AO20, AO21
Djokovic became the GOAT after RG21 because of DCGS

For future reference:
Nadal with a DCGS and slam lead is the GOAT
Nadal without a DCGS but a slam lead of 2 (Federer probably needs more, though I will give him credit as a 40+ year old) is the GOAT

  • Claim that consecutive records are the most important (consecutive slam finals, consecutive slam semi finals etc.)
  • Claim a player was past prime/old/geriatric/his opponent was younger, therefore the win or loss doesn't count
  • Bring in records from the womens game to claim that a certain player in the mens game is not the GOAT
  • Claim that court speeds were slowed down/homogenized after a certain date, therefore no wins after that date count. Keep claiming courts are slow despite the ATP reporting that courts are faster than ever.
  • Talk about the elegance of a certain player's game and how that player must be GOAT on the basis of their beautiful/elegant game
Can't think of any more for now. :sneaky:

Claim that Former is injured whenever he loses or retires mid match after getting outplayed.

Claim that Gluten intolerance and poor diet stopped a player to win for 3 years after he won his first slam.

Claim that a player is HC GOAT despite losing 6 USO finals winning only 3.

Claim that he is the most dominant player but won only 3 slams from 2012-14 when his rivals were healthy.

Only coping judging by recent threads is by Djokovic fans. Fedal fans for differin reasons are loving life. Federer fans know if everything remains as is Federer will be considered GOAt once recency bias wears off and Nadal fans would sign up now for Nadal being only member with the Golden Slam and joint most Major wins.
Also for Nadal fans it looks likely in 9 months Nadal will be leading the slam race so 2022 is now exciting.
for Djokovic fans the season has been a crushing disappointment how it ended. Undipsuted GOAthood was within grasp. Tennis immortality was within grasp. And it all turned to dust.
Right now it is Djokovic with all the regrets this year. This is the problem when anyone gets too arrogant and proclaims they will do something.
djokovic may rebound next season. i hope he does as its good for tennis. But i have seen more than few so called experts saying Djokovic was a broken man and unusually for him and his team we have heard absolutely nothing since NY.
Roll on 2022. All to play for. Never looked like that after SW19. Happy days.

Why do these "new narratives" occur?

Some people just can't accept reality, and have to create a slightly askew version of reality which protects their feelings, beliefs, and psychological well-being.

I wouldn't take it too seriously, as **** sapiens - which, tbf, I happen to be one of - are a bit of a joke, tbqh.

Brutal killshot. Imagine going into your 28 year old season with a McEnroe tier resume and then claiming to be goat after feasting on the inflation era

The critical element in winning ATP tennis today are bathroom break strategies and techniques. Player's are now hiring personal hygiene coaches onto their teams to facilitate and time bathroom breaks for optimal impacts on opponent's timing. Players are receiving big money from Cottonelle for product placement logos discreetly placed on the rear of tennis shorts to take advantage of dwindling product placement real estate.
