The Nike Vapor Tribute Thread

2024 will mark 20 years since the Vapor shoe has been apart of the Nike Tennis catalog. I've been meaning to start a thread that talks all Nike Vapor history, updates, and current offerings.

I'm going to reserve a few placeholder posts where I will post vapor history / chronology of the shoe (all spec info courtesy of TW)

Post any cool memories, facts, general news, or updates about the Nike Vapor franchise!

Forgot Fed had a vapor V IW PE, so sweet

That would be really fun bro. Would gladly add to one of the OPs if you took the time to do so

Couple ideas:
  • Exposed air in heel like vapor speed
  • Fit frame like vapor 5
  • Flywire aesthetic like vapor 6
  • Adaptive fit like vapor 9
  • Heel nike swoosh like vapors speed/5/9/9.5/X
Couple goated colors for inspo

Yeah, I’ll be down to take on a challenge. I’m no Tinker Hatfield but I’ll try my best. I’ll make two mock ups to see what I can do

Agreed, really sad earlier this year when my Wimbledon pair had its sole crumbled away
Really? That's unfortunate and it hasn't been that long. I have used old Barricade 7s from like 2012-2013 and those were fine when I grabbed them a couple years ago. I still have some GR6s that I just picked up that are in amazing condition. Those were released 2014-2015.

I tore my calf after playing in two pairs of 5+ year old Vapor clay shoes, and I remember thinking "these are old, I wonder if they're safe?"

Actually "crumbled" is just an exaggerated description. To be more accurate, the glue/adhesive lost their functions and the outsoles are detaching from the upper. I lived in the coast of East Asia and the humidity there also factors into that. I guess if you live in a drier weather, the deterioration will not be that steep.

Feel sad for you bro. Actually no matter how much we love tennis equipment, we should not risk ourselves for playing in gear which have signs of deterioration or aging, especially those in the outsole. Simply not worth it.

Actually I know that there are shoe glues which may save my pair of Kyrie x Kyrgios vapor X. But you never know if there are other latent issues in the shoes. I prefer playing risks free than playing in my favorite but washed up gear which may cause injuries.

Outsoles looked fine. I'm Mighty Mouse so my outsoles are usually the last thing to go. I rip holes in the toes and then the cushioning goes.

Calf tears feel horrible. My first major tennis injury was a torn L calf when I was 12. I lived in Texas at the time and it happened during a warmup tournament for the Texas Junior Slam (like Southerns or other big sectionals but for Texas). I decided to play through it to play the Slam and I don’t think I could move properly until a few months later in November of that year. No bueno.

Underrated Vapor imo in terms of comfort and fit. I would definitely prefer this over the Vapor 10/X knitted Shapo

Still have my white pair. Best lock down of any vapor X/VP1 midsole variety. That fly trap upper thing works

Would you say it’s on par with the adaptive fit or better?
It’s an interesting question bro. I would say in the mid foot adaptive fit wins, it cinches that area better. However, the fly trap upper for sure locks the heel/reat foot down better

Feeling is like being more sunk into the shoe, whereas the X/std adaptive fit was easier to feel lateral/medial support but somewhat lifted in direct comparison

I’d take the rear/heel lock down any day compared to the mid foot. A lot of shoes don’t have that rare lock-down in the heel even after the break in, overall which is very important for tennis imo

Totally man, if I could compare the heel lockdown to previous vapors, its even better than the V6, which was the best up to that point

Someone knows if the yellowing on the toe drag and mid section of the 9.5's are reversible? I found one RF AO pair buried in my old room but have a bit yellowed in those áreas. Thanks for any help

Another idea is to just paint over the toe area with acrylic paint. You can get it real cheap on Amazon

Same dude. Only images I’ve seen so far are the protos used by the SMU player. I did message him direct and he said they feel just like vapors of old. Similar to 6, 9 and X he said
Did any of the other SMU guys have them? I have a couple good buddies on the team that I might be able to ask. One of them was my doubles partner growing up.

Might as well shoot your shot. Could maybe get us a better pic or two. Although I’m pretty sure Nike makes the athletes return protos

Hi Guys! Loving this thread and new to the forums. I've always been a nike fan, I do miss the vapors from 2005-2008. Its unfortunate that the weather in Southeast Asia makes the older shoes crumble.

I have stumbled upon these for a very good price (about $20 USD) and I noticed the white colours have gone yellow (almost cream/gold haha). Since everyone seems to be an enthusiast of keeping the older shoes alive, does anyone have any recommendations for restoring these colours?

I remember people going crazy for the 'Oreo' colourway Vapor Tour VIs, but I can't even remember if Fed wore them? Still, I always thought this was the best looking Vapor for the relatively clean upper.

Fed did wear them. He wore them in the indoor fall season in 2009 and for the ATP finals. I think that year he lost to Del Potro in the semis

Glad that you’re enjoying this thread. It seems like we’re gaining traction in this community in terms of honoring the vapor lineage as a whole. I’ve always been bothered by the fragmented threads for individual vapors, because you’re not able to really discuss the whole evolution of the line, without deviating from the thread topic

in regards to your restoration project, I would recommend that you change the color of the midsole and the foot frame to something darker. That way you can live with the fading on the upper and it won’t be such a start contrast against the bright white on the midsole and foot frame. You can use acrylic paint pens, those hold up pretty well, especially if you clear coat over them

Thank you gino ! Anyway, I'm stocking up on these guys but in anticipation of vapor 12s... i hope they return to the glory to vapors.

I really cant, these are so incredibly beautiful. Just why nike, WHY? Suffering badly right now lol Dropping gorgeous colors on a shoe since the start of the year for never selling it. Nike needs to know that people want those and not the vapor 11

If they made this shoe and called it the Vapor12, you wouldn't like that either
