The number of times Murray stopped a big-3 from winning a slam

Nadal - 1x (USO 2008, would have defeated Federer in the final).
Federer - 0x
Djokovic - 2x (Wimbledon 2013, US Open 2012).

What does this tell us?

Nadal was clearly tired in USO 2008. He was not beating Federer in that one. Actually, in AO 2010 he would have a better chance.

Murray was never threat to Big 3 in slams. His success in slams against big 3 is no more than someone like Tsonga/Berdych. Few wins here and there but he lost evety time when Big 3 showed decent form.

Oh he gets a pass as he was playing the big 3, don't you know? Was never expected to actually beat them! ATG by proxy!

Nadal was a bit gassed against Murray, but Federer was stellar in the USO SF and F, he was hitting the forehand at 2005/2006 levels almost. Actually, it would have been better for Federer to face Nadal than Murray, might have gotten rid of the mental block after the Wimbledon final and would have helped him for Australia had they faced there again.

I would say Wimbledon 2013, as it was mostly the hurricane and the schedule that cost Djokovic the USO 2012.

I think you missed out on at least a dozen other "verys" otherwise you're in grave danger of disrespecting him and implying Murray might actually have had something to do with his loss. ;)

Aren't those basically Djokovic's worst performances in a slam final?

Murray was just so good it made him look bad, like Djoker did to Med, right?

Matches Needed to get 3 wins over GOAT contending Rival:

Medvedev: 7
Roddick: 24

Roddick=Good rival to Federer
Medvedev=Weak rival to Nole

Murray defeated Djokovic in a Slam final twice, something neither Berdych nor Tsonga ever achieved. In fact, Berdych never played a Slam final against Djokovic.

It is absurd to compare Murray with Berdych and Tsonga.

No matter how 'gassed' Rafa might have been, it was NEVER better for Federer to meet him at a slam over Murray...especially in the year that Nadal humiliated Roger at RG and ended his 5-consecutive Wimbledon streak.

It tells us that Murray is in the running for the most overrated tennis player of all time. Guys like Millman, Istomin and Soderling have made an equal or bigger impact the course of tennis history then trash can stat padder Murray.

Roddick was younger than Fed... whats the age difference in Djoker and Med? :X3: yikes
ah of course, age. Nole is so old he can only win Wimbledon, the Australian Open, break the all time #1 record...so not very good at all really. Medvedev should be ashamed for racking up wins against such a codger.

Must not be that great then. When Fed racked all those same things he wasnt losing to Roddick. Maybe he was just better than Djoker is today.

Federer achieved those records against Roddick, Hewitt, Safin, Baghdatis, Gonzalez, Srichaphan, Starace, Volandri, Pavarotti, Udomchoke, etc. whereas Nole surpassed them playing against Fed, Rafa, Murray, Wawrinka, Thiem...so I think Nole is actually the better one :cool:

It would have been HARDER, but it would have been better because a win over Nadal at a slam and at a final would have done wonders for his confidence against him at the time, just like closing out the Roma match in 2006 would have as well. Would he lose the AO final in 2009 (assuming they'd meet) had he won the USO against him a few months earlier?

Yes, a win over Nadal would've been better, but I'm saying the win over Nadal wouldn't have happened had they met at the USO in 2008. Any year before that, yes. But after losing to Nadal at Wimbledon, Federer's slam mental block against Rafa was firmly established...one that Roger wouldn't break until 2017. It was "better" for Roger that he met Murray in the 08 USO final.

All Murray had to do was show up :p.

TBH I was mostly poking fun at Nadal and his fans (who have an excuse for every slam loss), I actually think that match against Nadal at 2008 USO was one of Murray's best performances against the big 3. He displayed quite a bit of variety in that match and did a great job returning Nadal's serve and putting him under pressure.

P.S. and yes I do think Nadal would have had a good shot against Fed in the final, he was in his head big time after the Wimbledon win.
