Basically it comes down to a final between Serena vs the winner of the Henin vs Clijsters quarterfinal. Not much to talk about really other than these 2 matches and who will be champion. Venus unfortunately is past her prime on these kind of slow surfaces. Safina and Sharapova are done for. Dementieva was done for the moment she draw Henin in the 2nd round. Kuznetsova has beaten only about 4 top 8 players in slams the last 6 years. It is a miracle that somehow netted her 2 slams and 4 finals.

Excellent work again:)

I really hoped the Belgians would avoid each other until later in the tournament, oh well!

And Vika has a tough one:(

This is a great example of where projected QF's are clearly off!

Im putting my money on a Clijsters vs Wozniacki final.

Wozniacki wont be in the final. She is a very pretty and charming girl and it would be nice to see her do well. However she doesnt have enough power yet in her game to withstand the bigger hitters like the Williams sisters. Not to take anything away from her U.S Open final as she earned it, but she also had a draw that didnt pit her up against any of the really big hitters until the final. When you are hitting 6 winners a match and hoping for 60 unforced errors from your opponent, that is a tough way to win 7 or even 6 rounds in a major.

Gotta feel sorry for Dementieva, coming up against an unseeded Henin in the 2nd round, pretty sure Elena wont win that.

Dementieva is destined to be a slamless wonder forever. I wouldnt gloat over it if it werent for the fact the hype level around her is pretty ridiculous. It is silly to keep hearing such and such player who is approaching 30 and never won anything is finally going to win the big one. The last 2 U.S Opens and last years Australian Open people talked about her as the favorite and she crashed and burned as usual. At Wimbledon she played the match of her life vs Serena and it still wasnt enough. Clue in people, this is not a slam champion player, a very good player who just isnt quite good enough to win the big one. If she couldnt win it in 2008-2009 vs one of the weakest fields in history she wont do it now.

LOL on the Wozniacki vs Wozniak first rounder. Good luck to the chair umpire!

It has actually happened a few times already, and the two are supposedly very good friends.

JB, great work, and thanks so much for taking the time to post this. As others have said, the projections for the quarters don't hold much salt since Henin and Clijsters and even Sharapova will be floating around in there.

I love that there is a Serena v. Azarenka rematch...remember, last year Azarenka almost had her, but she was sick with the flu. Hopefully she will get a second chance at that match.

Azarenka seems to have come down from the first 6-7 months of last year though. She hasnt been the same player since after Wimbledon last year. I would have been more interested in that match 6-12 months ago then I am in now. I actually am not sure Azarenka will even reach the quarters the way she has gone lately.

^^^True. She's got the game and the potential though...I'd love to see her pull it all back together.

I met Vika at Wimbledon, this probably explains it:?

Yeah I agree. At the French Open last year the Safina-Azarenka quarterfinal was the match of the tournament. Azarenka was actually playing well enough to possibly beat Kuznetsova in the final, but Safina was determined to not end her best hope of winning a slam yet. Wimbledon vs Serena she actually played great, Serena just played her A+ game that day which explains the relatively one sided and deceiving scoreline. She was great until the summer hard courts hit then she started having some problems for whatever reason.

Sharapova not done yet. She has a lot of engines to improve. I think she could survive and stay for 2nd weeks.

What a listing!!!!It is really a masterpiece and I congratulate you for writing it(I saved it in My Documents folder for future reference)...So many new names that are unknown to me!!!! and I suppose that there are below them up to 100.000 players more federated in the whole world...
If this is so,why doesnt the WTA promote them instead of bringing back retired players?...Does the WTA need to be included in the Guiness Book of Records as having enlisted the richest sportswomen in history?...

Just updated the draw in the OP to include the qualifiers. The Dementieva/Kuzy/Henin/Clijsters Quarter didn't get any easier - Wickmayer thrown in there as a Qualifier.

Potential Wickmayer/Penetta 2R, two top 20 players.

That Quarter alone has 7 top 20 players, not including Henin. Talk about Group of Death.

Um, the WTA doesn't "bring back" players, but they allow all players to play in tournaments that they qualify for - or are given WCs because they are popular and have earned their reputation. Maybe your 100,000 other players will rise to the top eventually, but they will have to earn it first.

Don't worry with maripw, she seems to be off her rocker and is on some campaign to get Henin and Clijsters banned from the tour, or something.:-?

I think it is all a point of view question.Who brought back the Belgians to the circuit?.Popular vote, signatures were collected?.I think this was an exclusive decision of the WTA,so they ''brought them back'' misusing energies and resources they should have applied in promoting their federated players (my 100.000) which remain dormant most of the time, since no rookie tournaments are informed by the main sports media as ESPN or Eurosport.
What I hope is that a new fresh face should have the pleasure to lift the Australian Open Cup this year.

What?

The WTA is the Women's Tennis Association. It is not a physical place.

As Shell explained, who gets to play which tournaments is decided largely by their ranking. Which is earned through match results.

Kim had to play her way back up last year. She got a few wild cards to smaller tournaments, and worked her way back up by *winning matches*.

Henin has had to do the same. Get the wildcards, play your way back up.

You're either having a big joke on us, or you really have absolutely no clue how this all works. There is no conspiracy theory. If you're good enough, you play. And Clijsters and Henin are good enough. It is fine that they are not your favorites, of course that is a matter of opinion. But to believe that they were 'brought back' by some kind of conspiracy is really laughable.

And how serious was their decision to retire...I think a retired person is just that...retired!!!... and people have to be serious with their retirement, they wont be readmitted in their jobs...but it seems that the decision of the Belgians was not serious enough...so I DONT LIKE TO DEAL WITH SOMEBODY WHO ISNT SERIOUS...to deal with the Belgians under this light is a catastrophic event...

What is RETIREMENT?.It is just holidays?...I think that somerbody retires when he wont return to his job again...For me thats the meaning of RETIREMENT...even with what happened in the US Open...there the WTA made a great mistake in giving a wildcard to a ''retired'' ex-player and put the pole in the wheels of a ''competing'' one as Caroline Wozniacki...I cannot imagine what the hell were the WTA officials thinking about...To readmit a ''retired'' ex-player (or employee) is unheard of in the world of jobs and sports...I think this action doesnt make the WTA a serious institution...

Leave Kim and Justine alone. Actually, they make the tourney more exciting b/c they are the best players, and fans rather see quality players(quality tennis) than qualifying players(except you:roll:). Wildcard players doesn't get people's attention, but BIG names like clijsters and Henin are way more enthusiastic. I haven't heard anyone complaining about these girls returning(except you:evil:) but welcome them back to save the WTA. You really have a problem with Belgians players(zzzzzzzz(snoring)).

Your description of Kim taking holiday isn't right either. Normally, people take days off on a holiday last about 1 week to 1 month, but Kim took 2 years off. What kind of holiday is that? In Kim's case, it was a declared as a retirement(again, except you:shock:) in 2007.

Anyone in the bottom half of the draw were unlucky... tough bottom half with Elena Dementieva, Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharapova, and I am not sure I should say Dinara Safina but she is the No. 2 seed.

Proven commodities in the top half Serena, Venus, and maybe Caroline Wozniacki, and Ana Ivanovic. But Ana Ivanovic was not much of a matchup for Justine in Brisbane and Caroline Wozniacki was handled pretty easily by Maria Sharapova last week.

So Serena should have pretty much a walk to the semi-finals and the bottom half is going to be a war. I just hope in the end it doesn't become a war of attrition giving us a poor final.

Justine has a pretty hard draw if I was to choose someone... having to play Elena Dementieva in the second round, Jelena Dokic in the third, Kim Clijsters in the quarters... and maybe Maria Sharapova in the semi's only to face a rested Williams sister in the Final.

Now that to me is a pretty difficult draw.

If that doesn't happen marpiw, what do we do then? Shall we just cancel the tournament because the RETIRED players have resurfaced, and/or the top seeds are winning? I'm really curious?
