This is the OFFICIAL thread for the WTA French Open of 2014. The other one didn't have a poll and the OP is no where to be found. The WTA is already pretty much a joke on TT, so I had to take matters into my own hands.

Will there be a player to dethrone Serena this year? Azarenka is out, Sharapova hasn't beaten her in a decade, Li Na is inconsistent.......Halep perhaps? Or someone new? We'll see at this years Roland Garros.

Tournament runs from May 25 - June 07.
Prize money this year = $15,598,998

I hope the queen wins again. I have a feeling she won't, but I'm probably the most nervous Serena fan there is.

My dream final would be Ivanovic vs Li. However, I'm just not sure who'd take Serena out other than her injury?
Hopefully Sharapova is in Serena's 1/4 of the draw and then Ivanovic is in Serena's 1/2.

I am hoping for Ivanovic to repeat 2008, but despite showing a good form, she is too inconsistent for this. I am sure she will win first 3-4 matches 61 62 and than lose in 4th or QF spraying 50+ UEs.

Based on what? She was a fluke "champion," so the only way for her to squeak by again, is for all of the major talents to suddenly fall to injuries...or forget to show up.

Which major talents? The clear favorites have to be Serena and Maria. If those two fall early anything goes. Li Na would probably be the third favorite but she also tends to be streaky from day to day. Most of the women have been streaky lately. It is all over the place it seems.

Have to agree with Chico here. She has shown some really great form this year. Do you think Ivanovic's win over Serena at the Australian Open was a fluke too? Well it wasn't, she clearly outplayed Serena in that match. She came in with a great strategy and executed it perfectly.

Ivanovic definitely has an outside chance if she is playing well and the draw go's her way.

The term 'fluke' cannot be used when talking about Ana Ivanovic's 2008 Roland-Garros triumph. Ana had already reached the 2007 Roland-Garros final and the 2008 Australian Open final. Based on reaching 2 of the previous 4 GS finals, plus the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2007, she was primed for victory in 2008. Add into the equation that she won Indian Wells in 2008, Ivanovic was one of the favourites going into the event. Most certainly not a fluke.

Indeed, she is in a best form since 2008. Considering that field on the RG is wide open and that it is Serena's worst slam and surface, Ana could do some real damage, only if she keep her head straight and don't just not show up for some matches, like she had a habit.

Major talents? Please, the field is so weak is the reason why a 33 years old player is still in contention to win slam on her worst surface.

Yes, she has an outside chance. If Serena and Maria lose early it is anybody's title. Ivanovic's problem is she has trouble being consistent for seven straight matches. Heck, she has trouble being consistent for three or four straight matches.

D-Lite, she collapsed as a FO contender--or any serious majors contender in the wake of that fluke win (3rd round loss to Jie at Wimbledon, 2nd round loss at that year's USO). The following year, Kleybanova booted her out of the AO's 3rd round, and as defending champion at the FO, lost to a very young Vika in the 4th. I do not need to remind you of her encounter with Venus at that year's Wimbledon. The point is that she was--without question--at the height of her career/powers after the fluke FO, but she suffered a rapid collapse.

But D-Lite makes a good point about Ivanovic and that she can't really be considered a fluke slam winner since she did reach two other slam finals prior to that FO win. It is a lot better than a player such as Del Potro has done. He has never reached any other slam final outside of his lone USO in 2009. You may call his slam win a fluke but it is hard to call Ivanovic's slam win a fluke.

The unravelling that happened to her post that FO win is a whole different and sad story.

Serena Williams is expected to attend Kim and Kanye's international wedding this weekend, which includes a rehearsal dinner in Paris, France, and a formal ceremony in Florence, Italy, among other events.

Serena and Sharapova have the worst draw, having to play against each other in the QF; but then an easy SF, Radwanska

Halep: Kleybanova, Zahlavova, Koukalova, Stevens (16), Kvitova, Li Na, Serena/Sharapova

tough SF, but as a draw she can't have asked for more. All Simona needs is to perform.

Why do people here call Wimbledon 'Wimbledon' but wont call Roland Garros 'Roland-Garros'?

If you're talking about the people on this messageboard, they are mostly Americans and they don't study French in school. Canadians on the other hand study French and are more likely to call it Roland Garros.

Serena looks like a giantess next to Kim. And a genius, too, I'm sure

Anyway, was looking at SW's draw. I still think she's the favorite to win, but I could also see this happening:

R1: Beatdown of Lim.
R2: Muguruza comes on strong, and sleepy early round Serena has to dig deep to win a close one.
R3: Serena wakes up with sore thigh from Muguruza effort, faces Venus. Thinks no way in hell am I playing Sharapova with this jacked up thigh, I will never hear the end of it. Loses to Venus. Or, early round Venus still has something in the tank and legitimately beats sore sleepy Serena.

Of course, I hope that healthy Serena fires up the oven and serves up baguettes to everyone she meets. Stay healthy and generous Serena! <3

I can see that scenario happening for sure. She isn't 100% but the other thing, whether she is 100% or not,I just don't think a 32 year old Serena can win the French Open/Wimbledon double. It's a tough ask physically, and when she has compromised health, very unlikely. So maybe she will choose to concentrate more on winning Wimbledon where less can go wrong for her really...

Finally, I will get to see Alize Lim play! Just going to say it, she's hot as ****, hopefully this match will be on center court. Also, I think this might be the very first major she will play in the main draw? Either way, looking forward to this R1 match.

On the other hand, if she feels fit enough for Maria, I think she'll go all in for the title and probably win it. If she does, then yeah, it definitely puts her at a disadvantage for Wimbledon. But she's already won Wimbledon 5 times, so she doesn't have as much to prove there. I think she would be willing to let it go to win this one.

Some sad R1 matches:

Garcia vs Ivanovic
Keys vs Errani
Puig vs Stosur
Bencic vs V. Williams

Also really bummed that Muguruza faces S. Williams R2...

Of course upsets would do a lot for any of the younger players.

Serena has been pretty much the unanimous pick for the last 10 majors, and has won 4 of them. While this is an amazing record, over 50% of the time people are wrong when they say she will definitely win a particular slam. Of course, people will say injuries, health issues blah, blah but these are part of the game. She didn't deserve to win any of the slams she lost in. Yes,she has to be the favourite here, but while most people rate her chances of winning at 90%+ I think it is much lower...

Women's Singles - Round 1
Serena Williams (USA) [1]
vs.
Alize Lim (FRA)

This will be the third match on center court after Federer vs. Lacko. Should be good!

The only one I'm pretty upset about is Garcia vs. Ivanovic. I wanted both of them tondo well here especially with Ivanovic showing good form this year and taking Serena out of the first major of the year. Garcia is a young gun and it would be great to see her rise up the rankings. Oh well. I think Ivanovic will probably win in 3 sets.

I'm PRAYING that Keys beats Errani, maybe even blows her off the court, Keys has the firepower to do it. Errani is defending SF points from last year, so this wouldn't be good for her ranking at all. Let's go Keys!

The other two should be good. Wouldn't mind seeing 17 year old Swiss Belinda Bencic beating Venus. She won Junior French Open and Wimbledon last year. Currently ranked 81 and has a great W/L ratio for a player her age of 74-34.

Is that really the W/L for Bencic? How can she have played so many matches at only 17?

Why do people here call Wimbledon 'Wimbledon' but wont call Roland Garros 'Roland-Garros'?
You are more or less comparing apples and pears.

The "Wimbledon Championships" are held at the "All England Club" which is situated in the city of London. Wimbledon used to be a municipal borough of London but now it is probably easiest to call it a district of London. The main court where the games are played is called "Centre Court".

Equivalent in the case of the French Open the championships are held in Paris, in the "Arrondissement de Passy", the complex is called "Roland Garros" and the main court is called "Court Philippe Chatrier".

So more or less equivalent terms are:

City: London - Paris
Sublocation: Wimbledon - Arrondissement de Passy
Venue: All England Club - Roland Garros
Main Court: Centre Court - Court Philippe Chatrier

So I hope you can see that the terms "Wimbledon" and "Roland Garros" are technically speaking not really comparable.

Serena to win Roland Garros and Bouchard to win Wimbledon, you heard it here first.

While Bouchard is a rising talent of her generation, and I would like to see her majors breakthrough this year, I wish she would use her footwork to take advantage of the court. Adding that to her fearless attitude could be the formula needed to take that next, big step.

I'm really surprised that you,of all people,is one of the number of people to have been sucked in by Genie. Then again,Caroline Wozniacki did win 20 odd titles and made #1 so anything is possible in the WTA these days...

Anyone watching Hantuchova-Jaksic?

Forget Sharapova, Larcher de Brito and Errani, this Jaksic girl makes the most annoying noise(s) of all time. I can't even...

She just needs to improve that second serve. She's got the weapons to break her opponents, but she can't afford to give away 2-3 breaks per set.

Yes, but the weight behind the shots usually comes with age. So I think this is the first time in tennis history where the newcomers are unable to surpass the oldies. The tactics used on court and the style of play are still pretty much the ones put in place by the Williams sisters when they came up the rankings and started beating the older generation with more power. The problem is most of these teenage girls aren't powerful enough to do the same thing the Williams sisters did 10-15 years ago.
