Sharapova is taking Stosur to the woodshed. Sharapova sees the finish line (the final), so Stosur is nothing more than a bump in the road.

What a meltdown by Stosur. She seemed to be in control of the match and than lost 9 games in the row.

I must say Sharapova looks nice in that pink outfit.
 
Honestly can't bare to watch Sharapova. I swear her shrieking is getting worse. The constant just bashing every shot as hard as possible with no variation is tedious as well, it's like playing somebody on Top Spin who only ever hits flat shots. Try a slice or a dropshot or something, I'm begging you.

She may hit every shot hard, but she has variety, and is really good at executing strategy, as shown in the final set. She saved all three break points against. How about that lob she hit while jammed at 15-30 when Stosur served the fifth game? How about the slice backhand/lefty forehand that she put at Stosur's feet when Stosur was at the net. There were also some pretty amazing sharply angled backhand crosscourts that she for winners.

Say what you want about her grunts/shrieks, but Sharapova knows how to play. Even the NBC commentators noted she played a very smart third set.
 
Just finished watching my dvr. OMFG Sam Stosur you drive me crazy!!!! I literally LOLed at the eye of the gerbil.

When she was getting ready to second serve, Maria held her up and she double faulted. And never won another game. Ugh! It was crappy for Maria to hold her up, but you've just got to move on. It's like she broke the spell and reminded Stosur that she is a pigeon not an eagle. Or, perhaps more accurately, reactivated the spell that makes an eagle believe she is a pigeon. I actually allowed myself to start to believe. So sad....

If she gets to the point where she's facing Muguruza, she'd better be prepared for a fight. Most of the other ladies on tour aren't as tall as Masha (except for Madison, who is still developing her "head" game), and Gaby is stronger than Ana.

We'll see how it all plays out, I guess.

It's hard because she's already upper management, but she definitely deserves a bigger role.

I feel I must add after my rant that I still like her, it's just frustrating. She is the ultimate WWWH.

I hope so.

Usually when someone new takes out one of the big guns, either on the men's or the ladies' side, they fold in the next match in big part because it takes so much effort.

But I saw her play last year and not only thought she might not do that -- but Serena herself at the end of their match apparently told her "You keep playing like that and you'll win the tournament." If I were a young gun I know taking that in might give me some extra incentive to keep going.

Plus she seems like she stays cool under pressure, and she can match Masha height and stretch-wise in a way that a lot of the other ladies can't.

So ... we'll see.
 
Sharapova will probably win this tournament, in the absence of Serena.

LBH, Sharapova is surely happy to avoid Serena.
And i don't think Muguruza can beat Sharapova, the Russian will be better at the power game and is franky better in every department of the game except variety.

It would really be fun. She already has so much swagger, she would almost be insufferable with a slam to her credit. I say almost because I'm pretty sure I would like it. The queen is dead (for this tournament)! Long live the empress! :)

I think if Sharapova is defeated it will have to be by one of the young guns who take her by surprise. Otherwise I can't see somebody like Errani, Jankovic or even Halep beating her. it will be interesting that is for sure.

Agree a young gun is more likely. I don't think Errani has any chance whatsoever and Halep's prospects are only a little better. She just doesn't have a real weapon that can hurt Maria. JJ has a shot, but only if Masha is tight and flat and JJ just runs over her before she gets a chance to pull it together. Like maybe a 10-20% chance? That's still a chance...

Safina made the SF or better at all the majors, Olympic silver, and made three slam finals. Going by that she tops Jankovic.

Jankovic is a draw with Wozniacki, but Woz made a YEC final unlike JJ. Zvonareva made two slam finals, Olympic bronze, and YEC final. Dementieva had two slam finals, Olympic gold and silver, made SF or better at all the majors, led Russia to multiple Fed Cup titles.

I really hope today Jankovic will beat that annoying Errani. :twisted:

Errani is a terrible player. How is she in top 10 is beyond me.

Anyway after lots of breaks and being 4-1 down Jankovic leads 6-5 and to serve for the first set a second time
 
God I never thought I'd say it but Errani's grunting is even more irritating than Sharapova's screaching, truly awful. Ajde Jelena!
 
Can't believe this. Errani is so frustrating. Watch Jankovic losing this set now after wasting a set point and those other two silly points she already practically won.

Errani is like the female version of Nadal. She just gets everything back and forces you into making errors.

And she does not grunt on every ball strike. Only for the specific ones. Interesting.

Yep, it's an effective form of tennis but it sure ain't pretty.

Errani is a master of angles and placement. Rarely hits it where the opponent doesn't have to move. Doesn't bother Serena or Li Na, but a pain in the *** for most others.
 
Halep is a nightmare to play against. She is like playing one of those annoying opponents from topspin 4.

Every ball she hits seems to be deep and in the corner and angling away from you. And even if you get her on the run she burns you with the short cc forehand. You can see sloane getting frustrated trying to figure out how to deal with her court patterns.

Errani can win this sucker. Serena gone, Li Na gone, Kvitova gone, Ivanovic gone. All of them have serves with their power.

Maria is around, but she's capable of 10 DFs, which opens her up for a close match, and Errani wins all of those.
