The Official Angell Users Club

I'd like to ask for some help from Angell grip size experts. The grip size of my k7 is L3. I play it with wilson leather grip (was the thickest I could find - 1.9mm) and I put three yonex super graps over it to get to a size that suits me. (The first two overgrips are used (ie worn out a bit) and put on without overlap.) That's a bit too much and I'd be better off with size L4 for sure. But wonder if I should perhaps jump to L5? I suspect that three overgrips (although a bit worn) would probably be equal to two sizes up? Has anyone played with L5?

I recently bought a TC-100 V3 size L5. That suits me perfect. I used to play with a babolat pure drive L4 and it was a tad small. I would say that Angell's grip size is a bit smaller, i'd guess than L5 in Angell is like L4 1/2 in babolats.
I don't know if that helps you.

With 3 overgrips and a 1.9mm leather grip you're beyond even L5 size, Angell grips run a bit small (at least B shape do) so with L5 you'll have plenty of room to get to your size and still feel the bevels. Of course you'll have to check your setup, because you'll remove some weight from the handle (3 OG is like 18gr)

Any tips on keeping a consistent forehand with the 95 without having to swing out? I’ve noticed that when I really go for my shots and generate high RHS, the ball lands where I want it to, but during rallies & such when I just want to construct a point & move them around, I tend to overhit when not swinging as fast.

Should I pronounce my swing more? I know a part of the problem is me not swinging through which I’m working on currently with rally shots. Got another singles match tomorrow to get the kink worked out. Literally every single aspect of my game is better with this frame! Forehand still needs adjusting, but man this was the best decision I’ve made.

Thanks, yes the weight and balance is getting a bit out of control, hence the need to go up in size. Thanks for your inputs
FYI I think the k7 is only available up to size 4. Not tried k7 but the tc100 L5 and Tc97 L3 I have tried ran true to size, but the stock Angell pu grips they had were thin / squishy. Not tried leather though. Once I replaced it on the tc100 with a Babolat syntec and added an over grip it was about a size 6 (ie 4.75”). No issue with feeling the bevels either with that set up. Three supagrap overgrips would be about two - three sizes in my experience. I’ve used that option together with a Babolat syntec Pro to resize a Wilson blade size 2 to 5+.

Angell replacement grip runs 1.50-1.55 mm you can always replace that with thicker replacement grip like these

2.20mm ... Wilson Comfort Hybrid
2.20mm ... Pro's Pro Hyper Cushion
2.20mm ... Technifibre Conformax
2.20mm ... Technifibre Tackymax
2.20mm ... Technifibre Tec-Dry
2.20mm ... Prince ResiSoft

2.40mm ... Prince Durasoft
2.60mm ... Karakal X-gel

Wow..I had to move up on Angells to L4. You adding three OGs should translate to going up to L5 at least. The Angell PU grip is spec 1.8mm which is the one on the K7. You may want the L4 and exchange for a PU grip around 2.0mm then OG. Three OGs you probably have little feel of the bevels anymore

ah yes that's right - for k7 size 4 is as big as it gets
i think it's a sign that i need to complete my angell collection with either a tc95 or tc100 in size 5 :) think i will also prefer c shape which is not available for k7
adding heat sleeve - i don't i will be skilled enough to do a good job
thanks for all the suggestions

I got the TC95 V1 and liked it as well...but I felt V1 is very stable compared to my V2s. Configurations are the same except swing weight..I don’t know the sw of this v1 and my v2 has 300 unstrung SW. I am guessing it must be higher since I could feel the heaviness especially while serving but great stability on ground strokes especially my OHBH was on song. Now I have four tc95s...1 V1 and 3 v2s...all are 320g, 30.5 cm, 16x19, 63 ra...V2s has 300 unstrung sw...I just want to confirm as everyone else is saying as well that TC95 with 300+ sw feels great and just bosses the ball....I am curious to find out the sw of v1 now..

I have 3 Tc 95 16x19 63 RA, one of each version. The most stable version for me is V3. My V2 is V3 have 307 of swingweight unstrung. Version 1 can not say.

lots of good ideas there but keep in mind that heat shrink adds 24 grams weight to the handle plus your replacement grip would be 16-19 grams an over grip would be 5-7 grams, that is lots of extra weight.
removing your original grip and adding thicker grip helps, here is a good section for thickness and weight of the grips

is there anything peculiar about the weight and balance of tc95 that should be taken into account before buying? Or should i just stick to my usual preference and that should work for tc95 just as well as it does for other rackets. sorry i know it's impossible for anyone to answer what works for me but i mean did you have to go lighter or heavier than other rackets etc. I would typically choose 310g 6 or 7pts hl

From my experience heavier and more head light version works better. Go for 320 or 330 gms with 30.5 cm balance....this one dectates the ball like a boss with very good comfort.

So today I hit 1.5hr with the new 2019 pure aero. Decent frame with predictably terrific power and spin although comfort is still not a highlight. The brassy feel improved from previous iteration but again nothing to brag about. I also certainly felt more twist instability compared to my TC95s V3. Off course my TC95s are unstrung stock 320g/10HL and L4 compared to stock weight and L3 on the demo so some factors there. Still a bit surprised as the Bab is supposed to be known for head stability

I will play a while with tc97 and if I prefer more arm friendly racket i ll try k7 and see how it goes, comfort is my main priority lets see what my arm think about tc97
I’d change sport if the TC97’s too stiff, if your arms that sensitive just stay away from poly’s. The K7’s not going to be your saviour if the tc97’s Too stiff either, there’s very little in the comfort ant the K7’s too light and unstable without weight.

Nice to hear that, i play with the dr98 and poly and no problem so i guess tc97 will be similar ti comford so its fine, i find out soon enough. Don't know if i have to string higher than the dr98 or the same though

I think its stable enough for a player based on heavy spin, offcourse you can add weight for better results, the grip factor is major if you wasnt comfortable with, maybe twist a bit for that reason

Strung up 1 TC95 with Black Night 1.28 and another with Firewire boost 16g. So identical frames and at same tension @46lbs. The boost string plays well with comfort and excellent spin. BK just played better with no loss I can notice in heavy spin but it does provide me with such a tempered predictable response every time. Connection to the ball is upped as well and control. They are both fresh from the stringer and i kept switching racquets every 20 mins or so. I have an offer of $50 off a reel by end of year from T1 so I’ll certainly be taking advantage. I think boost could be pretty good offsetting stiffness of a high RA frame and at a higher tension. I remember when i tried all firewire once a while back it had terrific bite, spin and very soft and powerful.

Ordering BK this Friday to try out. I despise Volkl Cyclone in the 95... tried it out again last night during a match (since my other strings began to move), and it’s just too unpredictable of a string. Switched back after 3 games because of a more consistent response.

You had mentioned Tourna Black Zone. Did you hit it in either string pattern?

Yeah, Black Zone is pretty comfy. I tried it in PS P17 and TC95 18x20 in 1.25. I think the TC95 needed a bit thinner gauge.
Thinner than 1.25? Noted.

All I have thinner is Cylcone and Gosen OGSM in 18g. I need to make a string order and know what I need for the 16x19, but looks like I'll need to find a new favorite very thin string for the TC95 18x20. I was curious about it. Thanks.

Yes, I think you need a comfy poly 1.20 with a bit of grab as it is a dense pattern. I would not use cyclone on the TC95 personally. Frame is string sensitive and cyclone or RPM is just blah

I've been playing the TC95 18x20 for several months now (63RA). I'm recovering from a wrist injury for the past 15 months. The 18x20 is dense enough for me to go full multi and retain control and enjoy the comfort I need. Halo worked well as did Tecnifibre Multifeel. I used Tourna QuasiGut Armour for a tournament this weekend. It is really sticky and I'm not sure I like it as much as the Halo or Multifeel, but I played 4 matches in 28 hours this weekend and didn't have any ill effects on the wrist. I play all of these in 17 gauge.

Hi!

Can anyone give me a comparison between K7 and Wilson Ultra Tour?

I’ve been testing the WUT with a great sucess) on some important aspects of my game (just on clay court for now...),such as CONTROL, fast SWING and, by that, getting my hitting confidence again!

TC100 power is “too much” for my game.
I could never find the balance between such power and control.I changed strings, tensions, weight balance...

So,K7 or WUT,guys?
I’m expecting CONTROL and fast swinging!

Thanks!

Cyclone was my go-to string for years with my Volkls/Beckers and PCT, but I've liked the predictability of RS Lyon better in the TC95 16x19. And I was under the impression that Black Zone was as close as you can get to a smooth Cyclone.

I like Multifeel (a lot) and currently have it strung in my TC95 16x19 at 55#. I will definitely try it in my 18x20, along with RS Lyon 17L, Cream 17, and Gut/poly. Thanks!

Cyclone is not a bad string but it is terrible in the TC95 and TC100. It is simply not a good combo in my experience. I don’t think BZ is anything like Cyclone is all honesty. BZ is a much softer string with better more consistent response and even better control

Sounds like a good option for the TC95 16x19. I'll try the 16g in it.

Hit with tc97 16/19 today for the first time, mostly some groundstrokes and volleys to get used to the racket. Same specks with my dr98 and fresh string, overall its a very nice stick, good stability and control, excellent feel and medium power, noticed the higher sw compare to dr which i didnt like it that much i prefer fast rackets although dr is not that fast but i think its easier to play with and very good performance overall, i understand some people dont like that plush feel but i dont have a problem with that, i think dr is more comfy but time will tell. The first half an hour didnt like tc97 much but after the string settle it was better and was also getting used to the racket more, we ll see in the future if tc97 suits me better but dr98 is hard to beat thats for sure

Can vouch that cyclone is hot garbage in the 95 - which is a shame considering it’s one of my favorites in other frames.

It's good that you ask. Imho, the K7 plays a lot like the ultra tour, but in a 16x19 pattern. I really like the control and launch angle (low) on the K7. Playing the K7 with RSLYON 1.25 at the moment. I have a reel of scorpion 1.22 lying around, but I am hesitant to go thinner than 1.25 in the K7.
The K7 swings nice and fast and it really seems to work with my serve very well.

I am curious, did any of you guys in the end switch to the K7?

While pretty user friendly and a nice racquet in many ways but I preferred the D beam design of the TC95 and TC100 and the authority in an attacking game.

Any thoughts on which is a better doubles stick - assuming similar weight and balances as k7 are selected? (And assuming a single handed backhand)

I know what you mean. I am pretty torn between my TC95 18x20 and my K7. But somehow seem to favor the K7 for the moment (maybe because I am on a little bit of a winning streak with the K7 helping me out on my serve a LOT).
I find that I can play very agressive with the K7, similar to my Ultra Tour and hit winners left and right. But the 'normal rally ball' doenst have the strength of the TC95s ball

I recall quite a few people switching to the K7 initially, but I havent read a lot since then.

K7 is very light and I did not play it stock. I had to bring it up to 12oz with leather grip, weight at 7” from butt cap and @12. My TC95s are stock 320g/10HL unstrung but great doubles or singles. K7 was also a very good doubles stick more so then singles. If you really enjoy the K7 stock then there is really no need to change it. I doesn’t always payoff to chase what might be better. My 1HBH liked both sticks just hit with more damage the TC95

Hi will test K7 very soon.
I strung it today with hybrid setup, Solinco TB 1,15 on mains and Wilson Sensation 1,25 on crosses, 22/23kgs tension.

But honestly, for now, I’m loving the comfort, control and feel from Wilson Ultra Tour with same string setup!

The only think that TC100 still beats all the other frames in on my first serve!Monster bomb on flat serves!I will miss this, for sure...

In December I will make my final choice for the 2019 tournaments weapon!:)

Good to hear! Keep us posted! Did you change the standard specs of your ultra tour? I find both rackets to be pretty similar, K7 and UT. Both very comfy. But my game seems more complete with the Angells, probably because they serve better and my backhand is better with it.

Did any of you higher ranked players make the switch to the K7?

No,I’m playing UT stock and loving this way.
I didn’t test K7 yet.Still finishing my overall tests with UT and then will try K7 right after.
I’m a ranked 44 (I was 87 last year) and I played all this year with TC100 with same string setup that I mentioned before. But,too much power with this frame, and lack of control even with higher tensions...
Well...New year,new racquet!

K7 plays surpisingly well stock despite it's low weight but can definitely take some customisation, it's a great platform racket.

My main stick is currently 350g, 8HL, 330sw and hits a pretty heavy ball :)

Ive relaxed my swing with the TC95... it is the only way to go. It helps with disguise and consistency as well. Its what I love about the tc95... i produce power and spin more effortlessly now. If you tighten up you will spray it more. In short swing in a way that makes you forget about the racquet and focus on where you want your feet to be and ball to go.

Had such a lovely day with my K7. Played superb. Just cut out the old RSLyon and put cyclone power by pros pro in there. My hitting buddy swears by it, so I had to try.
Bought some scorpion but hesitant on the 1.22 gauge, since control is so important to me. Anymore string recomendations?
