I have found @JackB1 's contributions to this thread very useful. They add to the information about Angell Racquets in this thread and do not take anything away.

Thank You. I am just presenting my viewpoint. I understand this is an Angell club thread, but I think all opinions should be welcomed, whether positive or negative. The funny thing is I said many positive things about the Angells I tried. They just weren't for me. I explained it was mostly the feel I didn't care for. And I only tried the TC100 and TC95 70 RA. I still actually would like to test the TC97 and compare it to my Donnay Pro One 97, but haven't been able to find one at a decent price and at my specs. Seems like everyone gets then at 320 grams or more and I prefer a 310.

It's really easy to remove the weights.....

I have no idea what you are talking about. I never claim that every new racquet is better than older ones. I prefer many prior models to more recent ones, for example, I prefer the Head graphene models to the Graphene XTs and I prefer the Dunlop Aerogel 4Ds to the current lines.

But yes, no one racquet or racquet brand is for everybody and Angell is no exception. If you prefer old school style flexy frames and can't find your specs anywhere else, then maybe Angell is for you.

Look at your own history again, and you will find most of your fav frame were the ones you just acquired at that time.

Just use more recent examples, your got 100p and it was better than 95/others you were using, then you got warrior, then that is better than 100p, then you got pro one... see the trend?

You are totally twisting my words around. I never said any of that that you claim. I said many here exaggerated what these racquets can do and can't do. And I am not the only one that thinks that, I have seen others say the same in other parts of this forum. I am more disappointed than resentful. But I can't blame anyone but myself, but I love trying racquets and got caught up in all the hype. There are many others who like me, tried Angells and for whatever reason they didn't work out, hence all the used ones in the F/S forums, but those people don't post anything negative here because they don't want to deal with the overwhelming majority who think otherwise.
You did. And you're doing it again in this very post. No one claimed these racquets do anything that they can't do in the right hands. Whether you want to admit this or not, there's an inherent charge of dishonesty in the things you've written about what some of us have reported about these frames.

The truth is that we've given honest assessments of our experiences, and if you're gonna come here and accuse people of exaggeration or false claims, which you HAVE done; expect these kinds of reactions.

No one has accused you of exaggerating or lying about your negative experience with the Angell you tried. Do unto others.

You keep bringing up the topic of honesty. Show me where I accused anyone of lying or being dishonest.

You're probably right and I have changed pallets on Head, Volkl and Becker racquets, but some pallets can be very brittle and crack easily. I haven't attempted a Angell pallet removal yet but I'm sure I could do it.

They care easy to remove/change and don't crack easily. Best, BHBH

This is literally from your last post before this one: "I said many here exaggerated what these racquets can do and can't do."

So, again, you're accusing people of exaggeration which implicitly suggests you think they've been dishonest. Either own that or take it back, dude.

Sorry but they aren't the same thing. Exageration and purposely lying or dishonesty are totally different things. Accusing me of doing something that I never did isn't too cool either.

Then what's the issue with him posting here?

If you scroll back through the thread you will see a pattern of coming back and annoying people. He has a history of antagonizing thread groups under the veil of just giving advice or sharing his opinion. I'm not going to break down the history of it, but if it was innocent stuff, it would not be annoying to people because plenty of others give negative feedback on racquets and no one minds it.

Additionally, he basically accused me of lying about my opinion on the Prince 95 in this thread, which is why I just said enough and ignored him. I'm not interested in having continuous racquet brand wars and I am willing to bet it is a frame he doesn't even use anymore anyway. The only reason I still even mention the guy here is because he continues to troll the thread and annoy people. It's obvious to me when I read and the posts are all disjointed from people responding to him.

The thing about Angell frames is this : Don't try a used one not set to your specs unless you know exactly what you want. These frames are very good racquets, but probably best suited to players who grew up playing with softer frames, have good RHS and like to use full poly without killing their arms on stiff frames.

Those are basic guidelines I would suggest to anyone who wants to invest the money and buy one of these racquets. Based on those guidelines it's no surprise to me that he didn't like the frame (which was not even set up to his specs), and that's fine with everyone here, I am quite sure. The fact that he keeps popping back in to most likely say the same thing over and over is why people keep asking him what his point is.

I don't think anyone here minds one bit if someone doesn't like this frame. We will suggest tweaks we made that can help and then move on. If you are insanely bored and want to read through the entire thread, I don't think you will see much more than civil disagreement except when one person continues to come back and annoy people.

So if I say, "I hit a 200mph serve with this racquet!" Am I lying or exaggerating?

Angell frames are IMO some of the best I've ever played, and I've pretty much hit with just about every major (and many minor) brands available, including wood, aluminum, composites, fiberglass, and a slew of different graphite models. Specifically, they are amongst the best both in terms of quality of construction and playability.

That is my opinion. And yes I play A LOT and at a decent level. And yes I've trained to do so.

This having been said, it is still primarily the pilot and not the plane. This applies equally well to each and every brand of racket, including Angell. [emoji56]

true and good advice..

id add that a custom frame is like bespoke or made to measure tailoring... you gotta know your measurements and tastes otherwise you wont have the right fit and style.

Funny he keeps talking about me and then talking about ignoring me at the same time.
I never accused him of lying about anything.
Ask him for proof because it's just not true.
If anyone's "annoyed" by my posts, simply put me on ignore and the problem's solved. Continuing to bring up personal vendetta's over and over isn't enjoyable for others either. Why can't he "move on" like he wants everyone else to?

then stop stating that people are overstating or exaggerating... its a very passive agressive but personal affront. basically be careful of your language because this is an honest forum. you stating it once or twice was fine. constantly doing so indicts you.

basically be a serious troll or conscientious objector but decide how you want to be taken. it is looking troll

we arent going to put a disclaimer on every post that they dont work for everyone... but for fans of dampened flexy european style prostockish frames they are a must try.

it really does play that way... ive finally gelled with the slice backhands too... i hit more drives but still its nice to know its good at most everything... a lot of pop that needs to be tamed on volleys where the other player is aiming at my feet but that will come too... it does take time to dial in precision tools but 4 months to be at say 95% is very good... just low volleys and the perfect string remain...
So I tried the RY Lyon 17 today, strung at 52 in a TC97. I really liked it and based on your description of what you look for in a string, I think you'll like it as well. I've recently been playing with Solinco Hyper-G 16L at 54, the hyper-g is fairly powerful, hits a big heavy ball with a higher trajectory, it feels a little harsh off center (not real bad, but noticeable), only issue I'm having is if I mistime a slice backhand or a volley, the ball tends to sail. In comparison the RS Lyon hits a lower trajectory ball with similar levels of spin, it seems to have a little less inherent power (in a good way), volleys felt good, I didn't get to hit serves with it. The string bed felt a little more forgiving in that off center hits were less harsh that hyper-g, like the sweet spot was expanded. I would describe it as similar to Alu Power but with a little less forward power and more spin, I would say the "feel" is a little better, not so "metallic" as Alu Power. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

I couldn't get HyperG under control in my YTPPs, and I had to raise the tension so high in order to play with that it became a no-go for the TE I used to have.

I wanted to like it as it has more energy than any poly I've ever tried and I hear it's Agassi's string of choice these days, which makes sense as he hits very flat and hard and the dwell time and trajectory of HyperG probably fit his game perfectly.

Whats odd is the need to re insert oneself into a club of users repeatedly without anything new to offer, it seems like a need ti insert and relive one's own unhappiness when confronted by the happiness of others.
It may seem that way to you as a happy user, but makes a lot of sense to some of us who come to these threads to learn more about different frames....especially like these that are much harder to get your hands on. Hearing Jack's view on these rackets and how they compare is interesting to anyone looking to join the club here. Trying to quiet that voice or complaining about his comments only tends to reinforce his claims of they hype on this. Imo the compare and contrast here with him is healthy and useful for one of the purposes of this thread. I don't see his comments as bitter at all.

Look, im a professional in making arguments and we encourage honest responses... the point is he repeatedly tries to undermine people here. nobody else does that and he was doing it before he tried an Angell.

He hasnt singled you out either.

If he was saying something new or anything actually critical rather than vague accusations of "overselling" and "exagerating" while complaining about our high-ish ntrp levels you might have a case.

the fact us he's drawn to the happiness like a moth to flame.

All that said im excited that rslyon is looking like a good way to tame the launch angel and aid dwell time... we are practical users sharing experiences not evangelistic brand warriors. If i could reliably get a 16x19 pt57 i might use that.

it sounds like hyper g might be better in the 18x20 but ill drop off the tc95 at tge stringer tomorrow... i dont have the patience to string it myself again. hopefully they dont mash up the grommets but at 45 my tension is lower than most here.

I've just demoed a RF 97. Found it quite powerful and easy to overshoot although I'm pretty sure the syn gut it is strung with played a major role on my overshooting.

Is it the feeling you have with TCs? You need a low powered string to tame the frame?

yes, my previous frame the Pacific x Feel Pro 95 is perhaps the lowest powered midplus out there so very different. It is low powered full poly for me in the tc95 and i like good dwell time and some feel plus decent spin ptoduction since i vary from extreme topspin to flat.

also I have an interest in soderling because when I came back to this for 8 years ago I changed my grip and the way I hit my forehead to be patterned after his

I understand and I'm sure you can see I didn't say you questioned his right to posts....although it does seem some are questioning it, lol. I was just sharing an outsiders view on how I saw his posts fit in. As you read thru the thread, you get a feel for where posters are coming from and you factor that in. I was just saying that from my perspective, his comments were helpful even when factoring in his preference for the Pro 1.

I also don't see how his comments have been negative, but I guess I missed those by not reading all 74 pages, lol. What I did see from him seemed like the was quite strong on the TC but just thought the Pro 1 was better for him over all. And while he might have suggested some were exaggerating the TC claims a bit, I got the feel it was a compliment in that it was due to them being super strong players with pretty exceptional games....suggesting that players a step down from that might not get the same results... but I imagine in 70+ pages, I missed quite a bit.

you missed plenty, there's also other threads where he's complained bitterly of how we've overestimated and misrepresented the experience when in fact it varies for every player and we are being accurate for our experiences. It generally rude to call people who are being truthful and sharing their subjective viewpoint liars.

I do think that they are very set up and string sensitive which is what you would expect of a pro stock frame.... ie something which can be customized any which way to suit a variety of different styles.

Not sure what your point is? just because you can lie AND exaggerate in the same comment doesn't make them the same thing.
Why don't we just consult the dictionary since that is the generally accepted answer:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/
Definition of exaggerate

  • : to think of or describe something as larger or greater than it really is
    • : to make (something) larger or greater than normal
Definition of lie
    • 1: to make an untrue statement with intent to deceive
    • 2: to create a false or misleading impression
If you STILL can't see how these differ, I don't know what else to say.

Once again, can we all agree that exaggerating and lying are two different things? Exaggeration happens in virtually EVERY thread dedicated to a certain racquet. But it happens in different amounts depending on the thread. Also I never singled anyone out, so I'm not sure why you are taking it so personally?

I find it "rude" to twist someone's words around and make it sound like that had malicious intent when there was none there.

You make a good point in how my comments are viewed differently and possibly misinterpreted by people that are extremely enthusiastic about their Angell frames. Someone without a "dog in the hunt" probably has the most unbiased opinion of what's been said here.

I think what you say here is true to an extent Jack but why continue to post in a thread in which you have "no dog in the hunt" if it is only to be a dissenting voice? Kind of sets you up for criticism and attack as people will not understand your motive. Can't be much fun to read the negative comments aimed in your direction? In that respect I can't see why you would want to continue posting in a thread where your comments have obviously riled a few people unless you enjoy provoking people?

I too have tried two Angells (Vantages) that I didn't particularly like but I have now found the model that best suits my game (TC97) which incidentally could be the one that best suits yours.

Fair question....
I continue to post in many racquet specific threads...period. Not just this one. I have tried a couple Angells in the past and may try more in the future. I also want to keep up with any new developments in the Angell line. No it's not fun to read negative comments aimed my way, but I also will defend myself when false accusations are made towards me. I'm sorry if some of my comments "riled up" a few people, but that's to be expected when people are so passionate about their racquet choice.

What's grossly neglected here is that I haven't ONLY posted negative comments. I have posted MANY positive comments about Paul and his racquets and have also tried to help others with regards to specs or other questions that came along. But people tend to only focus on the negative comments and ignore everything else.

Ugh. If you're looking to engage in a semantic argument here, I have no interest in that and, in fact, I no longer have any interest in belaboring this topic with you altogether. So this will be my last response to you.

Exaggeration is a form of lying. It's lying by amplification, but it's telling an untruth nonetheless. Saying, "I hit a 200mph serve with this racquet" is an exaggeration but it's also a lie.

Backhanded Compliment wrote that he served bombs with his Angell. You deemed that to be him saying his racquet could "do things that it could not," when you absolutely no basis for judging the veracity or the degree of that statement. Why can't YOU just admit that?

You can't serve bombs with the Angell you tried because you can't serve bombs, period. Post until you're blue in the face that you didn't like your Angell if that gets you off. But stop suggesting that other posters are lying OR exaggerating when you have no valid basis for making that claim.

Ugh. If you're looking to engage in a semantic argument here, I have no interest in that and, in fact, I no longer have any interest in belaboring this topic with you altogether. So this will be my last response to you.

OK, so now here is my last response to you.....

First...these is not semantics... these are cut and dry definitions. You are rewriting the dictionary and creating your own version of it. If you don't believe me, accuse your wife or best friend of exaggerating and then later accuse them of lying and see if you get the same response from them. Pretty sure you won't.

Secondly, if I perceive someone to be exaggerating, then that's MY perception of it. It doesn't necessarily make it true or untrue, or a fact or not. It's how it sounds to me. It doesn't make anyone a bad person. IT's human nature to go a little overboard when you are excited about something.

Everyone here has the right to challenge someone else's statements. If I come on here and say "hey, I just bought this new Babolat racquet and it instantly added 25 mph's to my serve!!!" aren't you going to question that or at the least, be very skeptical about that statement?

I've just demoed a RF 97. Found it quite powerful and easy to overshoot although I'm pretty sure the syn gut it is strung with played a major role on my overshooting.

Is it the feeling you have with TCs? You need a low powered string to tame the frame?

I found the TC95 to be slightly less powerful than the RF97, but it's still relatively powerful for a 95 sq in racquet (talking specifically about the 63RA version).

It's fair to point out that Jack is now selling or returning to the company his Donnay 97's he had heaped praise on, after saying it reflected badly on Angell to have some of their frames show up in the for sale section. I have sold a racquet to Jack, and found him to be great to deal with, but the above fact seems relevant to this thread, as in people in glass houses...

Yep.

I can say with this frame I serve more aces. If that angers anybody - too bad. I actually serve more aces now with this racquet. It's that simple. I've had it now for 3-4 months I guess and I like it more now than when I first got it.
