I bought a TC95 last month, and found that little spots of the beautiful glossy paint fall off themselves, is this a case for everyone? Its like at first there was an uneven surface, then when i touched it, it cracks, then the fragments of paint came off.

I can only speak about V1 and V2 but Angell usually has the highest standard regarding paint. V1 paints were as good as bulletproof...no chips even with rougher handling.

Wow I have had V1, V2 and V3 paint jobs and they were all pretty bullet proof comparatively speaking.

My v2s chipped a lot. I have been reading a lot about paint quality and how superb it is on the angells. Its good when new. But if it starts to chip big chuncks can come out of the paint. V3 had the issue of paint coming of when wrapping overgriptape on the base of the handle.
And my K7s have started to lose random paint chips ( a la ultra tour), also around the grommets.

Grommets are (too) soft and are damaged very easily.

I think all of this stuff happens for a few companies. Prince Textreme was some of the worst - if you sneezed on it it would leave a chip. My racquets looked destroyed most of the time. I took to filling in chips with black marker haha

That is interesting i’ve had Angell for as long as 2 years and never a chip in paint.

So I decided to hit with my TC97 16x19 after having it shelves for months. First had it strung with a gut/poly at 58/55 but didn’t like it all. Decided to try Wilson Revolve at 53 and man does it feel so much better. Very plush. Would recommend trying it.

And about the paint, I’ve noticed that mine has chipped pretty easily, especially on the throat. Also the times I’ve had it strung there were marks left on the racquet. Happened before I got to even hit with it which was a bummer lol.

I bought 2 Angell K7 Red frames used about a month ago and initially did not like them. After a little customization, I have really dialed in with K7 Red. The K7 Red has to be one of most forgiving racquets with great feel, spin and decent pop. I also had purchased the new version of the Wilson Blade 98 about a month and half ago. The new Blade is a good frame but it took me a month to realize that my game is more geared to the Angell K7 Red!

Well I always like to be honest about things. Angells get a lot of praise here, and for good reason. They are great rackets, and paul is a very knowledgeable guy. He makes great sticks. For me the K7 lime might even be the best 18x20 out there, and I have tried them all.
I have bought and tried almost every Angell there is. TC90,95,97,100,k7red, k7lime. In the end I have sold them all except my K7 Lime. I really love that thing and it works for me.
But sometimes I get the impression that people feel the need to justify what they have paid for. I have spent thousands of euros on angells. And I dont regret it! They are great products! I just wanted to make clear that, like every other product, angells also have their flaws.

I think I might have 50-60% of all of my posts on TT in this forum and have extensively played with half of Angells custom line but ended up with another brand. As good as Angells are, they’re not some magic remedies or universal cures and, as you stated, every product has its flaws. Hopefully, this feedback gets where it should go and will be taken into account.

It’s a bit unrealistic to think others want to justify their purchase as if anyone person has a hold on an absolute reality. We all describe our experiences. I have owned every frame in the Angell lineup other then 90 and 105. I have always portrayed my personal experience and of course when I disagreed with anyone else it was based on that personal experience. I do not own an Angells right now as I am playing with more controlled string beds. Truly one area i found amazingly bullet proof were PJs that showed amazing resilience compared to anything else I’ve played. Again, that was my experience

310/320mm was too powerful for me. Slightly not enough manoeuvrable for doubles, net game. 310/315mm I think is optimal. 300g vs 310g will have typical advantages - more stable, heavier shot, etc.
Give 310 grams, 7 HL (320) another chance ;)

is angell really worth it? i see so many of them up for sale on stringforum everyday.

I think it mostly depends on the difficulty to try an Angell before buying it. After reading about Angells I bought a used TC100, I liked it, then a used TC95, I liked it better, then a new K7red and a new TC97 18x20. I ended disliking the last one, so I sold it. Now I think I am going to sell also the TC100, it stays at home getting sad for not being used.
You see, there is a lot of movement, even if people love such racquets.

As for the pj, each of my sticks has some scratches, because I play on play-it. I cannot believe that hitting that surface does not leave some sign on the pj, it is too hard. I think that even if it were metal, some sign would appear. Anyway I was surprised to read about chips on the throat. It cannot depend on the court surface.

I own, 4 Angells and the very first one (V3) chipped during the first week of use, it chipped in the throat and it happened right after the stringing job was done... Other than that this and the rest Angell’s racquets are holding very well...

I have several Angell racquets (2 TC97s; 4 TC95s; and I had a K7 Red which I sold)... None of them have had issues with the paint. I have bought them new and used, but I don't have any V3s... which is where the paint problems complaints started, for the most part.

I don't play on hard courts much. If I did, there would be more scrapes... but I think that can be expected as @Caol-ila has pointed out.

I do agree that on the whole racquets these days are not as high quality in many departments compared to the past.

I have bought 8 sticks, all new ones. Two V2s were more vulnerable - there were small chipping marks.
No complains regarding V3 paint at all.

I think about 3 years ago there werent many very good options. With stiff and arm wrecking frames being standard. Also a lot of frames are out of spec. And Angell provides excellent frames and a matching service so you get matched frames.

Nowadays there are a lot of good options and stores providing matching services. I personally sold all my angells, but kept my K7 Lime, which is one of the best rackets out there.

Pretty much spot on reply to the question.
Seems to me some are moved on far too quickly, takes a while to get right string choice, tension then a couple months dialling in. I use TC97, have sold Tc100, TC95 & K7...I’ve also sold a few of my TC97’s as I didn’t really need 5 matched frames lol.

I don’t know. One of my favourite brands and frames - Fischer VT98Pro and Vacuum Pro Mid - has very brittle PJ. It chips if you look at it too harsh. That’s mid to late 90s and ceramic layup.

I treat my frames like the ladies they are so I’m maybe not the one to judge but if I can cope with those Fischers, I sure can “abuse” Angells with little to no damage at all...

@joohan my friend, nothing is absolute... Having said that, my Fischer VT Pro 95 (which I bought used) and have played with against hard-hitting opponents, still doesn't have a scratch on it. Likewise for my Fischer M Comp 95. My VT 98 Pro (330g) I have kept in a racquet cover and racquet bag (but I bought it used) so I can't comment as I have not hit with it yet, but it doesn't have a scratch on it so far. Most of my used Head Radical Tour 630s, PT630s, LM Radical MP, Microgel Prestige Pro, iPrestige MP, etc still look like they are almost new, all things considered.

I think it's definitely a personal thing and depends on the surface you play most of the time, as well as, how you treat your racquets. There are definitely exceptions and examples of bad craftsmanship all over the place and throughout all the eras and decades.

Hmm. I have 4 v2s and 4 V3s (from this summer -not the first batches), and no scratching or chipping. One of my V2s hit the ball hopper, and it only got a small dent. If your Angells "chip" easily, I suspect there is something wrong in their paint.

It depends on how you relate to the racket. For example Angell (btw like any other racket) cannot raise your NTRP level from 4 to 5 just after buying it. But IMHO Angell gives you a very good opportunity to buy a high quality racket with a lot of options for a reasonable price if you understand what you need in a racket to fit your game

I'll second this. I knew what I wanted down to the spec, and out of the box (luckily because I bought mine a little used) all 4 I got from the same person were all the same - the QC had it dead on. Unlike other companies where things could be 14g different, IMO that's worth it for an OCD tinkerer like me.

I think no racquet is perfect per se. It’s the matching with the player that makes it good or bad (imagine Rafa playing with Roger PS haha) So Angells are no magic frames, but I do believe they provide what they advertise with the best accuracy/honesty in the market. I’ve played 3 days in a row against better opponents, and this morning I have complaints from everywhere except my shoulder, that’s why for me Angells are the best racquets

I am with you on the Lime, I have not only tried many Angells (TC95s, TC97, TC100) but also other brands especially in 18x20 pattern but also 16x19, with different specs. It also works well for me and I keep on coming back to it, but its a very personal thing as people have different preferences, styles, strengths, weaknesses etc.. Also flaws are probably personal too.

If I didn't use K7 Lime than probably I would still be happy with my Wilson Blade 2015 18x20 or probably one of the newer Wilsons/Head/Yonexes. As tennis players we should be so lucky that there are so many different options out there, but yes it takes some budget to test or use many rackets... And yes no racket is perfect, and Lime surely does not serve as well as some of the Yonexes for example, but many attributes fit my game and provides me the best combination of comfort and playability (for my game).

I am actually curious about how others customize their Lime, I have tried lead on 12 as well as 10&2, and really enjoy it at 340-345gr weight and 330-335SW (OHBH player)... not many Lime users out there but do drop me note directly if you prefer, thank you.

I think we are digging to deep in this chipping case. Angell is quite small manufacturer. And there might be small deviations in the production. Some of the production might be even outsourced. There were cases with slightly different batches, handle sizes, etc. - it clearly shows that QA cannot be bullet proof in all cases. However, I see that these bad quality cases are quite rare, quality in general is very very good (except the weakness/flaw that was mentioned earlier - soft grommets). Another thing - they do have excellent customer communication and I believe all these quality control questions can be solved directly with them. :)

Speaking about handle sizes, can someone with a TC 95 (or else) V2 with size 4 pallets grip + OG measure the handle circumference ?
I have a Size 3 handle and find it too small so I have 2 OG over the grip. It works well but I was thinking about switching to size 4 pallets. I only fear it might get too big, that's why I'm asking for help !!

thanks !!

Funny you say this. I got a 4 3/8 grip, knew I was going to add weight to the handle, but I used thin electrical tape to build the grip. Tried one wrapping from the base of the butt cap to just above where my hand sits, then two, until I liked how it felt. 4 1/2 is too big for me , but 4 3/8 is too small (with an overgrip as well).

It was a little trial an error but happy with the results. If you don't like the extra weight then it's a tough call

with the existing L3 grip, maybe you can try a thicker OG - i use 0.70mm over a base grip and that works for me. Sometimes you can re-wrap the replacement grip "closer/overlap abit more" to slight increase the thickness, then add an OG.

other than that, you can change to a thicker replacement grip over the existing L3 pallet - Babolat Uptake is thicker at 2.0mm, & with an OG this may just work.

if these doesnt work, then change to L4 pallet might be the last option (more efforts required too IMO)

thanks for your replies. Regarding overgrips, for some unexplained reasons my hands only stand Head Xtremsoft OG, so I'm stuck with its regular thickness (0,5mm).
i think I'll try a thicker replacement grip, as you told me. I might have a Babolat at 2,1mm somewhere
My only concern is precision as it will make the handle rounder (well it already is rounder due to the 2 OG). As I'm playing against better opponents this year, I've noticed I could improve from getting a more precise grip on certain situation that were ok against lesser opposition.

What about heat shrink sleeves? I use them regularly since I’m in between sizes on my Tour Gs and if you use the half size one (white from TW), it keeps bevels (almost) perfectly pronounced. Sure it adds some weight but so does thicker replacement grip or second overgrip. If you don’t like it, you can just peel it off.

Got a couple of generic heat shrink last year to build up a L2 to L3. A full size up heat shrink pre cut was about 16g and heated/trimmer comes to about 13/12g from memory, so that adds quite abit if weight at the tail end. Suppose it’d be a good option if your have loads of room to play with in terms of weight to get up to your preferred spec
It’s good to have options :)

So is it safe to assume that half a size heat shrink is half the weight? That’s 6,5g spread across the whole handle...would say it’s insignificant as far as SW goes. Not a bad trade off if it gets you the handle you need. Even if it was 12g spread across the handle...I’d say it’s less than thicker RG and an extra OG with bevels properly pronounced.

I used a full grip size heat shrink as well. I needed a heat gun (?) to apply it as opposed to the half a size one that is easily doable with a hair fan. I have both of them but I don’t have such a fine scales to properly measure...

The sleeves we use: black - full build-up: uncut, 12in long = 20g. white - half build-up: uncut, 9.5in long = 10g.

Idk if that helps anyone, but I just had them right in front of me and weighed them :)

For instance, I only use some 2/3 of the half size one (one hander) which is some 6,5g across the lower 2/3 of the grip. Insignificant...

yeah, when I build-up grips for clients there's definitely excess from the black, way less from the white. For myself I was doing the same, building only as far as my hand covered, then used lead for the rest of the weighting

I have several hours on the ASL2 now (1 match, some drills and some serving). Serves well, volleys well, groundies feel great and no hint of arm issues. I'm definitely still smitten and would certainly buy another, no questions asked. Question of whether I like it more than my similarly modified V3 TC95, however, is very tricky to answer, which I view as a favorable thing.

I pulled out the TC95 yesterday for some drills and today for some serves and not sure I could pick one over the other if I was forced to. TC95 felt a bit more plush, but I could easily attribute that to string differences (Square X in TC95 vs Black Knight in ASL2). Next step is to string both fresh with same strings at same tension and settle it once and for all, if possible.

Anyone else who has played both TC95 and ASL2 care to chime in with their experience?

Haven't used any other Angells, so can't compare, but bought an ASL2 a few weeks ago and can only echo what others have said - a really nice all-round racket, does everything well, no obvious weaknesses, easy to switch from defence to attack, just a very nice mix of power and control. Very happy with my purchase!

Thanks, great info as I play similar style however probably not on your level though :) So you would recommend 70RA instead of 63RA. I have elbow issues so would 70RA still be ok for elbow.
Hey SteveX, I have a TC100 V3, 70RA, 27.5 290g 6HL, strung with Genesis Spider Super 8 (16g poly) , and I love it! no arm or elbow pains. I find it stable, powerful and still plenty of feel. Stop theorizing about it and just go for it, you wont be disappointment. I did the same, I researched the crap out of it, read every post, demoed a bunch of different brands, asked a billion questions and thought of every scenario, all I learned was, that I was wasting time, and my initial gut feeling was right, and it was the best racquet for me.. Call Paul and chat with him if you need the extra positive reinforcement in selecting the right racket for your game... I have since done some fine tuning and added little weight to the handle and to the head, minor tweaks to suit my game, (baseline, power & spin, Sgle & Dbls) Does everything great, from serves to volleys. Never before, have I heard so many compliments from the other side, "great serve" , "good shot", "i thought that was going out" etc. I play with a lot of spin ( a must, as I live at 7,000 feet ) It can easily handle hard n heavy serves, as good as my weighty Wilson Kfactor weighing in at aprox 360 gr. Stop thinking about it and start playing with it... cheers D

I went with Paul’s recommendation of TC95 after I sent him a long email explaining where I was. I’ve been playing with clash tours, don’t love them but adjusted.

The TC95 is the best racket I’ve ever held. I was scared of the 95” and it’s truly amazing in my opinion. Powerful, accurate, maneuverable and believe it or not it’s forgiving.

I’ve been taping my fingers from a MCP sprain in my ring finger knuckle and wearing wrist brace for 3 months. Second time hitting with the TC95 I forgot to do both and didn’t need it.

I’ve had it 2 weeks, I’m ordering another and haven’t touched my other rackets.

I’m using razor blue technafiber poly at 45#, it’s the 16x19, ra63 and after adding some weight in the trap door it’s 10pt HL, total weight 335g
