*****THE OFFICIAL HEAD PRO TOUR 630/280 Club*************

sure you can join

material are the same, is the made in austria above the handle CAPED?

Made in Austria above the handle are generally heavier and firmer but not as much as the last batch of Chinese PT280 but closer to the early Chinese batch, the made in austria on the side are generally lighter and a bit more flexible. The are all nice, depending what you fancy, :)

notice I said generally, you do get some that overlap from the lows and highs

Hello,

I'd like to join the club. May I? So glad to find you and so unexpected.

3 x PT 630 made in Austria

BTW could you pls inform about the difference (beyond the protectors):

- one with "made in Austria" on the throat/handle
- two with "made in Austria" on the side

the second look much lighter than the 1st. Is there any difference in the frame (weight, material) between these two?

Thanx in advance

WEll this thread has been slow, so I try to write something....

There are many variances, I have about 20 PT630, and all my "made in Austria on the side" are heavier than the caped version. The caped version has about 10 gram weight differences among different production batches. The Caped version came in "SL" and "L' version, but the "made in Austria on side (bumper guard version)" has only "L" version.

I say the bumper guard version is a different frame than the caped version, but lets make a discussion for those who disagree.

I've hit with all the versions, from chinese to austrian, from french to canadian.

With the "Made in Austria" ones (PT280 or PT630), when it's printed on the side, it's definitely much stiffer, which I prefer.

Also, isn't it true that if it's CAPed, the "Made in Austria" is always printed on the handle, NOT on the side. The CAPed ones almost always have more flex. Some are like noodle.

As far as weight goes, if you take grommet and CAP off, I think the "made in austria" printed on the side are somewhat heavier, which is not an issue because you can put so many different CAP and/or grommet on these things and mess with whatever weight you desire.

How do you like your "new" PT630? :)

They are beautiful, many thanks for passing them on. I put new TW leathers on them and they are now just waiting for me to get around to taking them somewhere to get strung.

The PT280/630 is like coming home. I'll admit to straying (AG100) from time to time, but I always seem to come back and wonder "Why do I even bother?"

I've got about 10 PT280s now and 3 PT630s (although one is in pretty poor condition). I'm wondering if I can keep building my stock (probably only PT630s at this point) to a few more rackets, I should be done buying rackets forever? I know this will probably never happen (always looking for a better grail), but seriously why can't anyone seem to match what this racket can do? Head included.

And I've got to say, the paint job on these things is one of the best I've ever seen. Deep, bright blue, two-toned with black. Sharp text on the side. It just looks of quality and class, and blows away any newer graphic on the market. I realize racket companies want their product to be recognizable from 5 courts over, but all the stuff these days is near seizure inducing.

Still on the prowl for some 630s and 3/8 pallets. 8)

I am currently using the pt 280, made in austria.
Any how, I wanted to demo something close to this racket (maybe something a bit lighter in weight. So I look at the specs for the FP and Microgel Prestige mp. Than I came across the prices, both price at $200. Why is that so, should FP be cheaper???? The rest of the FP models are at "sale" price but not the FP prestige.

That is a Made In China Pro Tour 280.

Thanks vsbabolat, the reason I ask is because I have some "designed in austria" ones that look different. Notice that this one doesnt say "designed in austria" and the color looks more purple. The mold looks the same though.

Looking forward to reading your review. Since I think you have been using Maximum Touch (a string I have not yet used). I would string the PT630 with it since that is your normal string. I have been stringing my racquets at 55lbs with Tecnifibre TGV 16g lately or with Babolat Tonic+.

Don't you string your MG Prestige Mid somewhere around 60lbs?

Hey VSBab, I noticed you've been using TGV. Have you used TF 515 in the past and if so, how does it compare to TGV? TGV is supposed to be the replacement for 515. Thanks!

I love 515 17g and stocked up on them before they were discontinued, TVG is suppose to be the replacement more like repackage to get more money from an already flagship string:confused:

my new setup on the PT630 when I am feeling good and strong/healthy is cyberflash 17L 1.20 at 54lbs

NOTE: "strong" :) I give up on putting poly on the main. I used 17L cyberflash (50lb) and syn gut on cross (50lb), and I had to swing the sheesh out of it to get the same kind of power I would with natty gut main/poly cross, which IMO, is the ultimate for power, spin, and control!

when you guys string the blue stick with multi, do you do the full job? I might try that next just for the fun of it.

Michael Chaho,

One quick question, in regards to quality which one is the best racquet?...

1. HEAD Prestige Pro "Made in Austria" (red/brown)

2. Wilson Pro Staff 6.0 85 "St. Vincent"

3. HEAD PC 600 "Made in Austria"

4. HEAD Pro Tour 630 'Made in Austria"

5. Kneissl Tom's Reach Machine

I've spent the last few hours analyzing Head corp business strategy and it seems a bit confusing. Despite all other variables I can't understand why they will not produce products that have such high demand such as the pt 630, and the prestige classic. I just don't see how anyone benefits from their current stategy. Why not just have the pros use the paint jobs so they can still capitalize on the casual consumer with their new gimmicks and keep their tour racquets available for the more knowledgable ones? Also labor costs in China have been increasing so they're losing that benefit from when they transfered production. If they increased production in Austria and started selling these gems to the consumer it is likely that they would make a profit and restore customer loyalty. Although this is just an analysis of the market, maybe the numbers would reflect something different.

Well this is a PT630 club of course the PT630!!!! seriously, Quality? the above are all top quality, each in their own way. The prestige Pro with its brown paint stands out, the superb quality graphite on the st vincent matches that of the 1st generation Toms machines. The PC600/PT630 are equally solid as well.

If I really had to choose (not being biased), the first generation tom machines. I have one (strung about 100 times) and looks like a tank ran over it. no bumper, severe rash on hoop, has been thrown across court a dozen times, cracked throat etc... and it still plays SOILD as NEW. It is one piece construction where the handle is all graphite reinforced mesh, no foam. I have played with cracked St. Vincents and even though they are solid you can feel the battle scars/wounds.

was not playing for a while b/c of my wrist injury. still isn't 100% but it's manageable if i wear a wrist wrap.

been playing the best I have in a long while lately with an rqis 1 tour. I find that the balance makes a huge difference in my control of groundstrokes and also serves.

I have just a little lead wrapped about 5" from the base of the handle. If I put it too far up the handle or too far low on the handle, my game goes away. I dump shots into the net or long or can't get enough topspin on my serves. a little bit of lead on the handle in that area just feels right to me. I'm becoming the next John Cauthen.........where is that foo, anyways?

strange

I think I'm doing something right though. I held serve about 20 games yesterday in men's doubles night (I play 4.0s)--about 5 of them at love. But only one or two aces. Was broken only once...but I blame my partner ;)

I would love to try a PT630 but i'm pretty content with the overall feel/spin/power of the RQiS 1 tour. Also, I'm playing smarter...not trying to smash every return back. For 100-115mph serves that this one true 5.0 player throws at me, I've been able to return most of them back and win a good number of points by chipping the return back. I never had that in my game before.. I have a good record serving against him too =D

Just thought I'd give you fans an update ;)

Review of the PT 630

Hit for about an hour with the frame today and close to three hours yesterday. Both of these sessions included drilling and playing tie breaks with the woman’s grass court national champion (2008 ), and a 5.0. Strung with Luxilon Big Banger (full string job) at 55 lbs. My current frame is the Microgel Prestige Mid

Here are my thoughts.
Comparing it to the MG mid, although the overall weight feels similar, the SW is noticeably higher. This could be due to the frame not being as head-light as the MG Mid. The frame when strung is perhaps a point head light???? The SW feels similar to the Head Trisys 260 MP. I would imagine if it did not have the cap grommets, it would be more head-light, therefore making it easier to swing. It took me about 20 minutes to get into a nice rhythm, but once I did it was smooth sailing.
I have read a lot on the boards and in this thread the frame is flexible. On many occasions I have read it is even more flexible than the Prestige Classic 600. For those of you who know me, I prefer a stiffer feeling frame, so was apprehensive about this frame. Still, I wanted it to add to my collection of classic frames. With that said, on to the review:
From the first hit on the ball, I must say I was **VERY** pleasantly surprised to find it is not as flexible as other have noted. In my opinion, the frame is stiffer than the PC 600. I was absolutely loving the feel at contact. Very responsive without any gimmicks to take away the feel delivered to your hand when the frame strikes the ball. Frame has a rich feel to it, similar to the PC 600, however, with the frame not feeling as flexible>> it is more to my liking. IMO, it has much more of a direct response without the give of the PC600. The sweet spot was large, resulting in a forgiving feel on off-center hits. Also, there was no twisting of the frame. Two words> Rock Solid!

GROUND STROKES

Awesome. No other way to describe, but I will try. Off both wings I was able to generate good pace, excellent spin, and also flatten out the ball. Slice on the BH was also easy to generate, however the frame being more head heavy than I would prefer made it a bit uncomfortable. Power was easier to generate compared to the MG Mid. The PT 630 is a very clean and smooth feeling frame with both a lot of power and touch. There is very little if any vibration, and the frame completely absorbs impact with the ball. Control was excellent>>> Crank back, let it rip, and the frame responds. No surprises. If I needed topspin>> the frame responded. If I wanted to crank it with a flat ball>>> the frame responded. Best of both worlds.

VOLLEYS

As expected, the maneuverability at net is not excellent. The SW made it difficult to hit reaction volleys. This affected touch volleys and over-all control. However, when I was on time, the volleys were excellent with great punch, depth and added power. If one is on time, and set up properly>> The PT 630 does not get pushed around. Absolutely no twisting, and the added sweet spot makes off center hits almost unnoticeable.

SERVES

This is where I least enjoyed hitting with the frame. Again, as a result of the SW, I was not fully comfortable controlling the swing, therefore making it difficult to control ball placement. However, once I got more adjusted, I was managing very good pop, spin, and directional control. If this frame were more head-light, I’m positive my experience in this department would be much more enjoyable. The pop was easy to come by, as was spin. By the time we started playing tie-breaks, I was generating as much pop as with my MG, but I never truly became comfortable with it.
All in all, I had a very pleasurable experience with the PT 630. I really enjoyed the feel, heft of the frame, and how smooth it is to swing on ground strokes. The added power with no loss of control was an added bonus. I will be purchasing a normal head guard, and re-stringing it to take it out once more. If the SW problem is resolved>>> this would be my racquet of choice if I were to consider switching from the MG Mid. Has everything I love in a frame. Aside from the SW, which could be fixed to make it more to my liking>> the PT 630 is as solid a frame as they come with no visible weaknesses.

Thanks, and hope you enjoyed the review.

Yeah, what about those full caps? What is involved with going to a partial cap or can you just leave it off completely and put protective tape on instead. I have several PT280's and PT630's and 2 of them are the full cap version which I do not like as much. Any comments?

The problem with a "regular" bumper guard for the PT is finding one. I have tried the MG Radical MP and it works ok--it just hangs over a little at the edges cuz the MG Radical is slightly wider.

Other than that I have never tried using just protective tape. Sounds like it would be quite a process trying to cut the CAPs and then add tape, plus it would look really awkward. Try it and let us know?!?

the Ti pro tour is exactly that............... Titanium, stay away
Strung with Luxilon Big Banger (full string job) at 55 lbs. My current frame is the Microgel Prestige Mid
Do you always string with BB on all your frames? even your Microgel Prestige Mid? tension? Even if both (MP and mid) were identical in terms of SW stock/unstrung, after they are strung with BB for example, the MP is going to swing a tad higher due to the larger head size (more strings and especially with a very heavy 16g POLY when strung lower) some string sensitive people will notice this difference, many can't.

Anyway,

I have many Pro Tours 630's with CAPS (made in Austria on the side and/or above the grip) and some swing higher while others swing lower when unstrung/stock and I mainly prefer the ones that swing lower for the same reasons you mentioned others feel the opposite:) which is why they love the late batches of Chinese Pro Tour 280.

If you must have poly on this frame I would try it with cyberflash 17g ( good for flat bombs) or even 18g (better for second kick) at higher tension at least matching your Mid:confused:

You might already know this but If you want to make your PT feel a bit more head light without tampering with the BUMPER, try a few things like wrap around few times with 1/4 inch lead around the end of the butt cap and/or string with a very light string like Gosen synthetic 18g at high tension and/or even install overgrip (and/or replace with leather grip), and/or you might want to inject just a dab of silicon inside the handle etc....

OR, like ESP suggested, try iprestige XL normal bumper kit, the difference in SW is very noticeable. For me it took a little (just a little) away from the stability when using normal bumpers vs CAP.

I have a pt 280 that is cracked in the head, about 11 o'clock, warped too, abused from my high school days when they sold for 70 bucks so i knew i could always replace it, stringers keep telling me its going to give and it never does, hits as good as when I first got it.

I also have few cracked PT's (from experiments I have done while stringing) but can notice the difference in FEEL right away. The weakest part of the PT is 3/9 O'clock

you have to really smack the crap out of the ball when using POLY on this frame would not use 16g POLY for sure, as for full Multis I have used NRG and Biphase, thinner the better,

As far as weight goes, if you take grommet and CAP off, I think the "made in austria" printed on the side are somewhat heavier, which is not an issue because you can put so many different CAP and/or grommet on these things and mess with whatever weight you desire.

there are some CAPed PT 630 with made in austria on the side,

Just like Tandayu has said there are many variances and the tolerance specs are a bit wide

Even though I fancy the flexier more head light versions I enjoy playing with them all:):):). And just like you said it is not an issue since you can mess around with them.

I am thinking to switch back to the PT, since I have only one RDX500 Mid left. I always used full poly in the PT and thought it was ok, mb not as comfy as a multi or a synthetic gut but still sufficient power and good feeling. Would like to experiment with other strings though. I have PSGD and Gosen Micro, how are these strings full job in the PT?

Mike Chaho,

You're hilarious man! Guess what I too offered that dude from Italy money for the first generation Tom's Machine. I never got a response back from him. Hahaha. Maybe I should tell my Italian friend to hit him up and have her seduce him into selling the racquet to her and have her give it to me. I lost that damn auction one dollar!!! One damn dollar!!!

I have never played with a PT 630, according to what has been posted it seems to be more similar to the Pt280's that were manufactured in austia but finished in czech rep. on the basis that they are more head heavy unlike the chinese one that has a balance more similar to the made in austria pt 280

Would that be correct?

Hi - Curious what's reasoning behind this. Obviously everyone on this thread loves the earlier Tours, but doubt the Ti Pro Tour is exactly hamburger. Lot of people - me included - think the Ti Rads were the last great version of that series, only change for the Rad was a bit of Ti in the throat. Made it a bit livelier than the TT's, but otherwise same touch and crispness. Did the Ti Pro Tour drop Twaron and that's the basis of your dislike?

No, I don't normally use BB. I'm using Pro Supex maxim. However, I have used BB and am comfortable with the string. I actually like the way the string performed on the frame.

In regards to the SW>>> it is more due to me being more comfortable with a frame that is **VERY** head light. Although I thought about adding lead to the handle, I'm not too into making adjustments on frames with lead. Too much work involved in "getting it right". This results in focusing too much on equipment, rather than my own stokes and adjustments I should make.

I think putting a normal head guard would really resolve this issue. Anyway, the frame as I said is a monster. Extremely good frame, and not as flexible as I thought. Felt just right.

not only they dropped twaron but the frame felt "cheap" flimsy to us purists :) many would attest to my conclusions

I too am used to frames that are very HL and have played with the most HL prestige Mids before my PT630. Which is why I used to fancy the more HL batches of the PT630 but now I like them all.

anyway, you can use Iprestige MP tapered CAPS that are a bit lighter than the original CAPS., just a thought
