the old 360 vs ps3

after playing Call of Duty 4 so many times now, i must say i can't stop. my plan is to purchase either an xbox 360 or a ps3 as my computer is not playable with any games basically. i like the 360 but i like the ps3 as well. i have played both and graphics seem the same to me. yet the price is what takes me to the 360 but the red ring of death steers me away though only so many people have gotten it. but yea i need your opinions! i would most likely get virtua tennis 3 and call of duty 4 for either system and online but ps3 online is free

Do either of these systems offer you more games you are interested? While one might be a little cheaper, or one might not have free online, or one might have Blu-Ray, ultimately this comes down to a video game console to play videogames. metacritic.com and check out what games are available for each.

Personally I wouldn't touch the Sony even if it offered what I wanted. Those greedy, anti-consumer *******s can go to hell before I give them a cent. But that's just me.

Thanks for making this. I'm making the same decision. I've played both and both are equally appealing to me. I played COD 4 online with my cousin for like 2 days and it was so fun. I'm steering for the PS3 because of free online play. And my friends who know a lot about the gaming industry think the PS3 will end up with the better games. But I'm willing to listen to other people's opinions.

Your friends do not know a lot about the gaming industry. We have been given no indication that the PS3 will end up with better games. In fact, evidence contrary to this has been presented with the vast majority of cross platform titles.

In terms of hardware, the Cell obviously seems impressive on paper, and when working on very limited scope tasks such as those presented using folding@home, but in games, it has shown to offer no advantage *whatsoever* to the PS3. Given the radically different architecture, it goes without saying that the Cell could even be listed as a negative for the PS3. Developers aren't as familiar with it, and you end up with games that run better on the 360. The PS3 has been around for a while, and there is no indication that this will change. Given the choice of developing for an unfamiliar platform with a very limited installed base (potential buyers of your game), vs. a huge installed base comprised of users known for buying more games per console, with architecture you are familiar with and better development tools, which would you pick? Unless you are offered a hunk of cash or other major incentives, the 360 is FAR more attractive for developers. Saying that the PS3 will get better games is ludicrous at best, unless these people mean 'games I like more', because they are fans of series like MGS.

Remember that the format war is now essentially over with Blu-Ray the victor. So if you plan on watching movies in Hi-Def without buying a separate device, you might want to go with the PS3.

I would go with the 360 because they have more games. Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Halo 3 are just a few games which are only for the 360. Also Virtua Tennis 3 can only be played online for the 360.

Well, if you like shoddy made equipment and getting screwed with a $50 bill every year for xbox live then Xbox is for you. I had an Xbox360 and I was sorta pleased with it for a while. But then came the Christmas break fiasco where no one was able to get online to play even though they paid they're 50 dollars. I was particularly pissed because I had just paid my 50 bucks and for 3 weeks (while out on break) couldn't play anything online. And what does Microsoft do to compensate loyal customers for the down time that was completely their fault. They give us a crappy acrcade game that was only available for download for 3 days. What sort of bs is that? How about a free month of Xbox live you a$$hats? The PS3 is better than the Xbox 360 in so many ways that I can't even keep count. Screw Microsoft!!! And Bill Gates is a total scumbag. I'm glad to have that crap out of my house.

360. But it depends on what your friends play. I'm an online multiplayer so xbox live has the best online experience. COD4 online is incredible with all your friends and topsin 2 is a great game. But yeah the RROD has happened to like 80% of my friends that own a 360 but you can buy it at costco and exchange it anytime it fails or use the 3 year warranty (just for the RROD only).

Had mine fail and sent it in. Sucks but without it I actually picked up a racket and started playing again.

I've had both consoles since they launched in the US and both offer decent games. If online gaming is important to you, then right now at this point in time, Live is far better than Sony's free online service. True it's $50 a year but you get what you pay for. Friends list, chat in every game, alot of features that Sony just isn't providing yet. As for console reliability, that is a toss-up and the red ring of death doesnt effect every single 360. Buy a replacement warranty for peace of mind. I take meticulous care of my consoles yet am still on my 3rd 360 due to faulty hardware (no red ring of death though). My launch day PS3 is working flawlessly. Granted I buy the vast majority of my games on the 360 and play it more.

I almost got screwed on the RRoD but i took the thing apart and fixed those stupid X-Clamps while adding some heatsinks to the GPU Ram and some artic silver (Bestthermal compound) to the Main proc and GPu proc. Have had no complaints with XBL, I never been unable to log in and play.

I'm with WBF on this one

I would suggest the Xbox 360, for several reasons:

Warranty: I can vouch for Xbox's customer service, mine broke (1st run defect, not RROD) and paid for shipping both ways and had it back to me in 10 days. While I haven't had experience with the PS3 warranty (I don't have a PS3) I have had problems with Sony in the past.

Games: Xbox wins this hands down, I struggle to think of more than two exclusive PS3 games worth getting

Online: PS3 may have free online, but Xbox Live actually works well.

So there you go, three reasons to get an Xbox.

Yea I started reading more into the PS3 vs. 360 and am starting to lean towards the 360. The only downside I can see now is the $50/year, but the cheaper price vs. a PS3 and better games should make up for this.
How much did it cost you to start off with your 360? As in how much did buying an extra controller, a couple of games, extra accesories, etc. Also, do you have to buy a cable to get the internet service or does it come with the 360?

Ultimately, it all comes down to what exclusives you want. If you want Halo, gears of war, etc, go for the 360. If you like Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, then go for the ps3.

Well I was never a very big gamer, but COD 4 and Rainbow 6 Vegas were awesome, so I was looking to upgrade. I was never a big Gran Turismo or Final Fantasy, and I generally prefer shooting games, so it's looking more and more like the 360 is the way to go. But I'm waiting until the summer anyways, so I'll reassess then.

I've got both and if a game is on both, I always get it on the 360 because live is great and the 360 controller feels so much better to me especially for first person shooters like call of duty. The PS3's controller has the joy sticks in uncomfortable places, the triggers are really weird, and the overall shape just doesn't fell right. The nice thing about the PS3 is that its a blu ray player and I'm a big fan of gran turismo though forza's not too far behind.

Many new games will be released by Summer. Great decision.

Exactly what exlusive games are coming out for the 360 this year? Gears of War 2? Can you name another because I sure can't. Now don't get me wrong, I was a huge GOW fan. But seriously don't like the way that Microsoft treated their customers after that whole Xbox Live outage during the Christmas break. But other than GOW 2, they don't really have anything else to look foward to. Where as PS3 has Kill Zone 2, Metal Gear Solid, Socom, Tekken, and a whole host of games to look forward to. Not to mention the fact that you can change out the hard drive on the PS3 from a 40 gig to a 250 for about 90 bucks. The 360 on the other hand has a 20 gig hard drive, actually more like a 14 gig, and it cost you about 180 bucks to pay for their 120 gig hard drive which can only be used on your xbox. The PS3's hard drive is a laptop hard drive.
