The Older Generation

Wynter

Legend
My thoughts on the older generation tends to be summed up by this.

Hewitt, Safin, Roddick etc; were not as good as Nadal or Djokovic, whilst fed as always was a complete legend.

However, when I'm going on Youtube to watch a match, I find the Older generation more pleasing to watch. Djokovic vs Wawrinka for example is a great match, any three of them. Yet I prefer Federer vs Gonzalez or Nalbandian vs Hewitt in 05

Even then, there are more classics to me because of the greater depth, today most classics feature Nadal/Djoko/Fed/Murray vs Each other or on the odd occasion a player playing great

Yet you could watch Roddick vs El Aynoui, Nadal vs Coria, Safin vs Agassi, Agassi vs Blake and that's not even going near Baghdatis vs Hewitt/Agassi or Nalbandian vs Fed in 03 AO or the Masters Cup Match

In summary, my general thoughts are this, the Big 4 in today's tennis is better than the Top 4 in Fed's Era, more specifically Nadal and Djokovic are better than Roddick/Hewitt/Safin

However, if I were to try and show people tennis highlights to get people interested in Tennis, or if I were watching some to pass the time, I prefer going back to 02-07 because there are plenty of amazing matches with tons of diverse and different opponents.

That's nothing against this current generation, there are plenty of great matches, but I find the older gen to have been more exciting to watch even if they weren't as consistently good as the current generation.

What are your thoughts? I'd prefer civil discussion over this ;)

I watched A Rod recently on TV (Powershares seniors tour). Serve and forehand are still good, but he is slicing the backhand excessively. Blake was also playing and netting all his first serves.

I don't think the big four is better TODAY than the best four players from Fed's era, but in general I agree with the idea that the big four is better in general than past big fours.

(Rafa is currently injured (and is injured often), Murray is just not the same, and Fed, while still winning matches, is far past his prime level. Even Djokovic is struggling with his level post Wimby.)

However, you're exactly right about the entertainment value and variety of yesteryear vs. today. There were so many more random barn burners, and so many dangerous players in any given draw that the chances of seeing an amazing match were much higher than they are now. Today is a lot more about defense and retrieving (which can be awesome, at times), but it gets old when that's all there is to watch.
