The Olympic singles Gold Medal is actually the most important title in tennis.

Olympics champion Zverev cannot beat Djokovic and Alcaraz, and has never been ranked #1.

OL champ might rank with M1000.

My theorem proof is as follows:

1. The Olympic Games are the most important sporting event in the world.

2. Ergo, the tennis tournament within these games is also the most important tournament in the sport.
1. Wholeheartedly disagree. There are some sports where the pinnacle competitive event is the Olympics. Swimming. Gymnastics. Track and Field.

There are some sports which do not belong in the Olympics. Tennis is one amongst many.

Just because Djokovic wants it badly and Rafa has it doesn’t make it more significant than a slam. For most sports outside of Track and Field, Swimming and Gymnastics Olympics is a pageantry, acts as a unifier where great sportsmen in various disciplines come together and that’s a wonderful sight and spectacle. Players of course love to represent country and flag and the uber nationalist types like Djokovic desperately want to win for their country. The football teams send their u21 squads or B teams as Olympics soccer is not an even a footnote compared to the stage and prestige of FIFA WC. I’d bet Zverev would trade that OG gold gladly for any slam he could get.

They introduced golf for crying out loud and believe next edition will have cricket!

No not true, the olympics is the biggest most important sporting event in the entire world obviously
For some sports yes, but that doesn't include tennis.... I can bet that more people will know who won FIFA World Cup since 1994 without looking it on google than knowing who won OG gold in football since 1992 without looking it on google..

Novak alone has put that pressure on himself. I don't think he owe his country gold medal, cause country didn't invested anything in him. His parents took the huge sacrifice and any debt that he has is towards them. Novak has won a medal so far and that is ok for us, if he is not happy with bronze or silver medal but only gold than that is on him. We don't think he is mandatory to win it. All factores included, I would say Rio 2016 was a best chance to do that but let's see what happens next year.

Nobody outside tennis cares about tennis points. The Olympic gold medal is what matters to the world.

Nadal was on a mission at the Beijing OGs. Incredible level. Rafa doesn’t really ever lose his temper, but the most upset I have ever seen him on court was in that match against Nishikori at 2016 Olympics. You can tell how much the Olympic Games have meant to him. Pretty great seeing him being other Spanish players like Marc Lopez into the glory as well in doubles.

Athletes in major American sports are not given permission to participate at the Olympics, such as baseball & ice hockey. NBA players can take part in it, because summer is their off-season.

Anyone ever noticed on the ATP site that they have the 2012 Olympics listed as a hardcourt event?

Given that they have just published an article saying that Murray's 1st tour level title match was at 2009 Miami when he had already won 10 titles by then, I can well believe it!

When NBA superstars' careers are summarized, the most important things are how many championships they have won, and if they won the playoffs MVP's. How many gold medals they had may just be a footnote.

On the European side, how many soccer superstars have played in the Olympics?

I don’t understand how could I miss this quality thread.
I might make an exception with my thread bumping hating habit.

Who's the defending Olympics champion? Yeh right, Zverev.

Zverev cannot win even a single slam.
Yes, but Zverev did win it and he deserved it. It was good tennis that got him the medal and it was very entertaining seeing Djokovic in his mad, obsessive scramble not getting it. Zverev is hot stuff when he peaks. Just a pity he seems not interested to apply himself.
