The On-Court stabbing of Monica Seles | Darkest Day in Tennis History

Graf probably would have won 10 slams max if it wasn’t for this.
Well, this we will never know for sure... she would have won less and Monica more, that's for sure... maybe they would have retired at 15 each, who knows?

That'd incredible however that the guy was never sent to jail.

Gunter should have had jail time.

people who commit murder in psychotic states usually don't go to jail but rather wind up in forensic hospitals for a while. A young woman admitted to the hospital where I practice years ago had killed her husband and children in a paranoid state, convinced people were coming to the house to torture them so she believed she would spare them that suffering. Clearly insane, she spent about two years in a forensic hospital (a psych hospital with prison security precautions) and then was released to get on with her life, with required follow up to make sure she was taking meds. I understand she started dating not long after that......."so tell me, how did your marriage end?" What was unusual about the Seles case was that this guy Gunter was not thought to be clearly psychotic but rather felt to have some kind of personality disorder, and one doesn't usually avoid prison for merely that.

No. Graf was superior to Seles in every way. One won the Grand Slam--the other could not, as she (Seles) had no chance of winning at Wimbledon, and in her lone final--at the accepted height of her game--Graf took her to school. No contest.

This hysteria will never end. Granted it happened on camera - a real life soap opera.

What happened to Monica is terrible and disgusting. In the end - fortunately, she received a minor wound and within a couple months was ready to play again - though as we know, mentally it was much longer. Again....terrible and there is no excuse for a sicko like Gunter.

For perspective, Monica recovered, played again, is very very wealthy, famous, and I hope - happy!

Todd Witsken was a plucky journeyman and nice guy... he got brain cancer in his early 30's and died leaving a wife and small child. There are worse things in this world.

All around you people are facing tougher journeys. Yes, I know....nobody cares lol. Seles rules! No! Graf rules! This is the bestest, worstest, greatest most tragic thing that ever ever happened ever!!! :)

Right, Graf was superior to Seles in every way, that is why Seles beat her in all of their slam finals before the stabbing, except in Wimbledon where she was told not to grunt and underperformed because of that.

Grunting or not grunting had no bearing on Seles' performance. That is a myth, just as its a myth that Seles was some GOAT in the making (yeah, nevermind her utter failure to ever win at Wimbledon, which means no Grand Slam and no GOAT status), when she was always going to have a short shelf-life as a player. Beyond Graf, if she played longer, she would have been taken to yet another tennis school by the historic generation to follow.

And how did you get to that conclusion I wonder? Of course it did, in the semis she beat a 9 times champion and the winner from two years earlier and then she loses in the next match 6:2 6:1 - where she couldn't grunt. Grass was her weakest surface, the surface she played the least, and just like many great players she would improve on it as she develops(she was only 18) and very possible win a major there, like others before and after her.

There must be a weekly thread about Seles and it must always be about the stabbing. Fortunately for both Seles and Graf, they are both happily married and getting along with their lives. I’m just amazed at the obsession of some who are still talking about this incident that happened 30 years ago as if it happened this morning ;)
