The Pacific 10 Alliance!

Hey guys, the tennis season is just starting, and it's going to be an exciting conference in the west and south-west. We have some of the best teams in the nation: USC (NCAA team winner in 2009 and 2010), Stanford (NCAA singles champions 2010), UCLA, and more. All these are ranked top 10 Div 1, and we know they are better than these nosy east coast schools :).

So, I think we should all come together and discuss everything and anything related to the Pac 10 and west coast conferences. Supporters of any D1 school in the west and southwest are welcome to the forum. Texas schools are welcome as well. (East coast fanboys keep away...).

Let's start the Pacific 10 Alliance!

I think USC mens will get some very stiff competition from UCLA and Stanford .. my prediction is they won't win the Pac 10.. on the hand USC women looks better than their low teens ranking .. I'm looking for them to surprise Stanford.. for the top spot ..

OK, I checked that, J. Morrissey from Ireland. That's the Irish guy someone on these boards was talking about.

He looks pretty good (was ranked top 30 international juniors, ITA rankings).
Better ranked internationally than Marc Giron who committed to UCLA for next year, and who is supposed to be the top player in the US.

Here's a great site: ITF international junior rankings.

Nadal had a 10-1 singles record, but wasn't even ranked #1.

Djoko career record in junior: 40-11, and ranked #34 in singles.... Wow, and look where he is now.

Domijan and Klahn were ranked higher in juniors, they both reached close to #10.

Some very good players, who turned pro and made the top 50 or better had worse rankings than some top college players.... very interesting!

I really don't see USC not winning the Pac10. Right now, I think the best competition comes from Stanford who could pull off an upset, but I doubt it. February 26th at Marks Stadium should be epic.

It would be hard to pick any women's team other than Stanford in the Pac-10. Florida has another shot at them in the NCAAs, but the Stanford women could go undefeated this year. Might be one of the best women's teams in NCAA history.

The season is starting, and USC has already posted 2 wins during the week-end, against Sac. St, and against St Mary's. They tested out some new recruits with good success. Stanford is also starting dual matches on Tuesday.

Who will be the best performer in the Pac 10 this season? USC, Stanford, UCLA, Cal,....?

Can the new top recruits at UCLA make a difference? How good is Kowasakowski, and where will he start in the UCLA line up?

I don't know much about Cal players, but I have my money on UCLA or Stanford over USC men team this year..and I'm feel UCLA will be the future NCAA champs in about 2 or 3 years from now .. I love seeing all the SoCal kids doing well in college tennis..

I believeUCLA played Kowasakowski at #1 against BYU this weekend, he won... a freshman...that is how good he is!!

Kosaw looks good! but the rest of the team looks a bit weak... they had 3 three setters at 2,3 and 4. Still good win for UCLA in the end.

1. Daniel Kosakowski (UCLA) def. Thomas Shubert (BYU) 6-2, 6-3
2. #86 Amit Inbar (UCLA) def. #110 Evan Urbina (BYU) 4-6, 7-5, 6-3
3. #64 Maxime Tabatruong (UCLA) def. Spencer Smith (BYU) 6-3, 3-6, 6-0
4. Clay Thompson (UCLA) def. Georgy Batrakov (BYU) 6-3, 1-6, 6-4
5. Alex Brigham (UCLA) def. #88 Patrick Kawka (BYU) 6-4, 6-1
6. Holden Seguso (UCLA) def. Daniel Hwang (BYU) 7-6 (7-5), 6-1

It will be interesting to see who coach Whit chooses for the match tomorrow...

Will he choose some new recruits? How good is Jamin Ball?

My picks:

1. Klahn
2. Thatcher
3. Clayton
4. Ball or Lin
5. Lin or Ball
6. Hirschman

Where does Kandath stand? Nowhere as far as I know.... Last year was a real let down.

I dont see Jamin Ball getting much playing time this year. My idea based on fall and sherwood results is that coach whit will play them as:

1-6:
Klahn
Thacher
Clayton
Lin/Hirshman
Hirshman/Lin
Kandath/Kehrer

however, whit may play clayton alittle lower based on his recent results.

I don't see Hirshman playing at 4. He normally plays at 5 or 6. He's a great player at these positions, wins a lot of points at these positions.

Kandath and Ball are neck and neck,,,very similar level. Lin maybe little better but on a bad day, he is actually worse than these guys. Hirschman for sure at #6 because he has proven time and time again that he can win consistantly at this spot.

well like i said, hirshman is most likely going to play 5 from my earlier post. no way is he going to play 6 and beneath kandath, kehrer, ball.... thus making him play AT LEAST 5 on their lineup. and no feddie, if a player wins at 6 for the last 2 years, whit will not put a weaker player at 5 so that hirshman can keep winning points at 6. thats called stacking. (unless u can prove to me otherwise that there is a player that is better than hirshman that can play 5 for their team tomorrow)

so my prediction is still more or less:
klahn
thacher
clayton
lin
hirshman
kandath/kehrer

Yo db379, my post on that other thread about Stanford fans may have been a bit harsh after going back and reading it, so my bad. Let's just talk tennis, and trust me when I say, I don't hate Stanford, Just really dislike some of Fedace's comments.

Ahead of today's match, 1st dual match of the season, some good news for Stanford:

STANFORD, Calif.- Junior Bradley Klahn has been named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for Jan. 17-23, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.

Klahn took home singles and doubles titles on Jan. 17 at the Sherwood Cup, completing an impressive tournament weekend heading into dual match season. The Poway, Calif., native defeated USC's Steve Johnson, 6-2, 6-4 in the championship match, winning the Sherwood Cup singles title for the second straight season. It was the fifth career singles championship for Klahn, who also won the ITA Northwest Regional Championship and NCAA Singles Championship last year after snagging the Pac-10 Championships singles crown in 2009.

In doubles play, Klahn teamed with Ryan Thacher to outlast Baylor's Roberto Maytin and John Peers, 8-6 for the doubles title. This win marked the fifth doubles championship for the pair of Klahn/Thatcher.

This is Klahn's fourth career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor.

So Whit left Ball aside for today's match... Kandath playing at #6.

Is it a good decision? I don't think so. We know how Kandath plays, and he's a weak element of this team. I would have liked to see how Ball performs in a dual match. Can he hold the #5 or 6 position?

Reactions?

if I was Whit,I'd leave Klahn out and play my younger players ,cuz Sac state is pretty weak .. unless he wants to boost up the team's win/lost ratio

A coach wants his starting lineup to get the match time in right now, because the ITA Indoor Kick-off Weekend is coming up in three days.

Harbiatsiuk is a very good player, a tough nut to crack. you want Klahn to play him.

Easy win yesterday against Sac State. Stanford didn't lose a set. They actually did better than USC who lost one match against the same team last week, ...even though USC didn't have Johnson.

I thought Hiarbatsiuk would put on more of a fight against Klahn, but it was an easy match.

USC is supposed to be playing Florida State right now. The USC scoreboard has names and scores from last spring on it (e.g. Robert Farah). They changed the opponent name to FSU, but the player names are not Florida State players.

How is the weather out there? Any ideas on the real status of the match?

No. 1 Stanford Routs UC Davis 7-0, Pushes Home Streak Into 2011
Stanford has now won 165 consecutive matches (133 regular season, 32 NCAA Tournament) on its home court.

Jan. 26, 2011

STANFORD, Calif.- Back on the court for the first time since capturing last year's national championship, No. 1 Stanford breezed past UC Davis 7-0 in its season opener on Wednesday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

The Cardinal (1-0, 0-0 Pac-10) swept all three doubles positions to take an early 1-0 lead, and then cruised in singles play by overwhelming the Aggies (1-2, 0-0 Big West) in a tidy two hours and 21 minutes.

Stacey Tan won her first set 6-4 at the No. 4 spot, representing the only set during singles action in which a UC Davis player won more than three games.

Stanford has now won 165 consecutive matches (133 regular season, 32 NCAA Tournament) on its home court- a streak that spans nearly 12 seasons and is the longest active home winning streak among all sports in Division I athletics. The Cardinal has not lost at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium since a 5-4 setback against No. 4 California back on Feb. 27, 1999.

Stanford is back in action this weekend, participating in ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Cardinal hosts Cal Poly on Friday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m.

Wow! Klahn has really grown into a much stronger player than he was last year! He can really overpower his opponents now, and put a lot of pressure. I like Nguyen, but Klahn just played so much better in this match.

DN is hard worker on and off the court, but he doesn't have any weapons to make it to the next step to be a #1 or prime player or pro.. I hope he can find it soon as time is running out . The YouTube of him against Klahn,I noticed he was hitting so many balls off his back foot and jumping . It's too hard to win consistently playing defense at that higher level of tennis. His volleys are good but they are not decisive put away winners ,they are more like placement volleys . He has a great mental game and knows how to fight ,but I think he's gonna need a bit more.

To be fair to Nguyen, he's 5'10. Klahn's spin, specifically on the forehand, was kicking above Daniel's head. He didn't really have much choice than to be jumping off the back foot. This was also Nguyen's first true test of the season since the fall tournaments. Not only would I love to see this matchup again at Ojai, but I definitely think the score would be closer.

There has got to be someone out there on the college tennis scene that can spin Klahn's spin.

nothing is fair, that's why he lost so bad.. he needed to figure out how to counter that heavy spin.. there are other options that he better use or he'll be the wrong end of matches like this.. go study how Davydenko beat Nadal..

I mean, I got that, but even so, that forehand was in beast mode and Daniel looked to be having one heck of an off day. Like I said though, it was really early on in the season. If the Ojai forecast calls for a rematch, I definitely think D-Win can put together a better performance.

I hope you are right ,but DWin is not USC #1 player,he might not even get an automatic invite to the Pac10 round at Ojai.. wish him luck all the way ,he's a heck of a fighter that's for sure..
