Arizona State is on the bubble? Weren't they supposed to be some kind of powerhouse after they started the men's program back up.
Good question. After Matt Hill's success at USF, he regularly had them in the top 30, it's a headscratcher why ASU is not at a minimum that good every year.

Yeah, I also thought ASU was bound to be a very high-level program after it was re-instated. I thought the Hill hire was a great one at the time.

Congrats to USC on their fourth consecutive conference tournament championship. They were better than the competition by quite a distance. Dostanic is on a roll. The Trojans have the players to make a deep run in the NCAAs. Their top 4 are as good as any in the country. The addition of Tien has transformed USC into a team that can go toe to toe with Texas, TCU, Georgia, Ohio State and Virginia. The one (relative) weak link is doubles. They would need to shore that up to go the distance

What happened to Bradley Frye this weekend? He did not look good against Stanford or Utah. Southern Cal is likely to have to travel to Michigan or Georgia for the super regional. Makk and Marek look really strong at 3 and 4.

They will falter. Tien is too fresh. The late additions before the tournament never work.

Colette Lewis interviewed Learner Tien. Good read. He’s keeping his options open. If his summer goes well he could skip college. He’s not a fan of schoolwork.

If he plays the pro circuit this summer and fall I see no reason why he can’t make a similar jump to what Michelsen did. His game translates to the highest level

What’s up with Dostanic? Lost to rising Harvard frosh Murali 1&3 at the 15k in San Diego. Had a poor NCAAs too. Is he going to play line 2 behind Tien for the Trojans next season? Here’s a guy who appears to have regressed. Was outstanding in juniors and through most of his college career but this last year was a struggle except for his convincing win over Fery at the Pac12 tournament

Will UofA sport make it through their financial accounting debacle without slashing and burning down the programs? https://arizonasports.com/story/3541907/arizona-athletics-releases-report-dave-heeke-firing/
Wait isn’t the move to the Big 12 supposed to be the cure all? Certainly a substantial step up in revenue from TV rights. Or is that not very different from the current Pac12 deal?

One thing is if a marquee program like Arizona with its top BB team is considering belt tightening it doesn’t look good for a number of others

Unrelated to their conference move from what I can tell, UofA lost $140 mil. and can't account for exactly where it went. Bet those students getting an accounting degree from there are PO'd.

Quoted from the article Jan 26, 2024 -

"University of Arizona interim chief financial officer John Arnold told the Arizona Board of Regents at a meeting on Thursday that about $35 million what he said was a $140 million fiscal gap last year came from Arizona athletics.

The university started 2023 with $844 million on hand and ended with $704 million, according to Arnold, and has implemented plans to address overspending, including a hiring freeze and travel restrictions.

Another change Arizona made recently is parting ways with athletic director Dave Heeke".

Heeke announced earlier this month the situation would not lead to cutting any sports programs".

Rick Singer has an idea on how revenue can be increased for their athletic staff.

The downside is that someone like MMA champion Mark Zuckerberg could also be the starting quarterback for their football team.

USC got through in a close one over San Diego. Dostanic had a rough weekend losing in straights to Trevor Svajda of SMU and Oliver Tarvet of SD. Not sure they are a top eight team this year without Marek and Frye. And Colby who was handy for them down low is now at UGA

Colby had a 3-6 record last year for the Trojans at #5 singles. He was not a key contributor for them last year.

Agree but he was very good his freshman season. And I still think he’s better than the lower order options they have this year.
Gotta wonder what was behind the Colby sophomore slump. I always think injury first. Will be interesting to see how it goes for him a UGA.

We need to give more plaudits to Clancy Shields for the job he has done at Arizona. They reached the highest rank in program history at #9 in the 1st computer rankings. Thanks largely to that big win over Texas and a win over A&M.

Remember for many years Arizona was the last place program in the Pac 12, behind Oregon and Washington. Often finishing barely inside the top 75 and of course having no chance against the California schools. And as we have seen in other conferences, it’s hard to turn around programs like that.

He was hired around the same time AZ State re-started their program and they were supposed to be the hot new thing in the league and state but Shields kinda stole that thunder and brought it to Tucson.

I remember a few people on here not being impressed by the hire from Utah State at the time.

He’s a strong recruiter as well as a very good developer. Has cornered the Scandinavian market and now seems to be recruiting from Japan too.

As he should. A blatant attempt at cheating and it was caught on camera.
I’ve always thought the rule was ridiculous anyway - your hat falls off, a ball falls out of your pocket - you should lose the point for failure to secure your own equipment

Such an odd loophole, even if it’s rare that a crazy tries to take advantage of it

Jorge Plans attempts to get let

Former Clemson player and current UCLA Bruin Jorge Plans Gonzalez getting heat for his attempt to get a let vs Arizona.
Used to watch the girls 18 clay courts and would see this, maybe once every other year or so. It was a little more discrete for the girl to "accidentally" knock the ball loose from their bloomers, then call a let. Usually the umpire gives a warning, next time it's a point.

Jorge should be ashamed. I did see on X/twitter where the UCLA asst. posted they do not condone this and he will be punished. What that will consist of I don't know. I'd suggest he's sat from the very next match regardless of opponent. My cynical guess is that sitting him a match won't happen and we won't know any more from here.

What was the decision by the chair? Assume disallowed the let and lost the point? Probably could easily be considered a code for unsportsmanlike conduct?

The one tweet I saw said that "had that let not been called it was break point, after the let Plans held and won the second set". I have no way to know if that's what happened. I do like that so many matches have cameras now. Players should know that if they don't want to embarrass themselves, their team and school across the globe, better not show your ass during a match.

The UCLA coach de Villers tweeted twice in the thread and seemed upset his player did that. We now get to see if Plans plays or sits the next match, or whatever actions the coaches choose.

I think they will likely sit him for a match or two. He has been a bit player for UCLA this year, sometimes slipping in at 5 or 6 and not always playing. It would be a tougher stance to take if he was a star #1 player or something.
