The Pacific 10 Alliance!

Stanford edges Tulsa 4-3. Wow. That is really impressive. I sure hope Stanford does not have to play any team better than #31 Tulsa in the round of 16 in Palo Alto. Or in the regionals before that.

STANFORD, Calif.- No. 12 Stanford collected a 4-3 non-conference victory over No. 31 Tulsa on Friday night at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium, winning its second straight contest following a four-match losing streak.

Playing the nightcap of a rare doubleheader with the women's tennis team, Stanford (10-5, 1-1 Pac-10) took the doubles point from Tulsa (14-6, 5-0 Conference USA) before securing the match with a win at the No. 6 spot.

Straight-set victories by Alex Clayton (6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot) and Greg Hirshman (6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot) put Stanford on the brink of clinching the match at 3-0.

Tulsa broke through when Clifford Marsland outlasted Denis Lin 6-7 (9), 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4, slicing into the lead at 3-1.

At this point, all three remaining matches had quickly reached a third set with the Cardinal holding a slim lead on court six while trailing at the top two spots.

The clincher would eventually come from Matt Kandath at the No. 6 position, polishing off a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Tristan Jackson for his 12th win of the year.

Lin can't win to save his life at the moment

Tennis is like that. You get on a roll and win bunch of matches and if you lose that one that you shouldn't lose, then it seems like you lose several in a row. It takes a good close win to break out of it. Its ALL Confidence. this happens to me and all of us as well. Not just D1 guys.

Maybe this thread should be renamed Stanford Alliance - Meanwhile USC continues to dominate - shut outs vs Oregon and a good Washington team this weekend - And they are winning with freshman playing and winning and 4 5 and 6 week in and week out plus 4 out of 6 Americans in the line up - inspired recruiting by Coach Smith!!

Stanford makes Catgut out of Arizona wildcats

Stanford breezes thru Arizona wildcats today. 4-3 Jamin Ball gets some action at #6 singles too.:)

Great match up in Tucson yesterday- must have been in the 90s temperature.
Went to this match up- a choice between tennis and a couple ranked baseball teams duking it out...U of A against Oregon State.

Life is good in Men's minor sports

Points of interest
(ITALY) Freshman Miccini gave CLAYTON everything he could handle in this very tough match- Right down to the tiebreaker... It is said Miccini was not recruited, and came on board as an after thought-Now this "free card" looking really good for the Cat's future.

Sat with Ryan Thatcher's family and freinds in town, rolled a few errant balls back on court not three feet from the match, and generally watched the difference between a top team and a middle of the pack outfit-Talked to him after about internet stalkers- Very interesting conversation.

Very interesting. Sounds like the team is embarrassed and it would not surprise me if the coaches have instructed the mens and womens players and family to not discuss him on this forum. Just my guess. Would like to know the real inside scoop on Fedace and if the coaches have actually addressed his on-line fanboy antics.

i feel sorry for the team if they're having to put up with this...anyone who has played club or varsity for either UNC, NC St, or Duke in recent years has dealt with a similar situation where restraining orders ultimately had to become involved at a couple of those locations...frankly the guy was seemingly harmless, just a very enthusiastic supporter who sent some messages that became subtly sexual over time

scary if the women truly feel the need to carry around whistles

Looks like Patrick Pohlmann is out for San Diego, which messes up their entire doubles and singles lineup except for #1 singles, as he plays #1 doubles and #2 singles.

San Diego still (briefly) had an early break advantage at #1 doubles.

Stanford can beat a badly depleted lineup that is ranked well below them even when healthy, and Fedace can post about how impressive it was, I guess.

Thacher and Clayton lost, but Stanford won 5-2. I guess this is part of Clayton's secret plan to get ready to win the NCAAs in May.

Patrick Pohlmann out, five players for San Diego have to move up a slot, player missing from their very good #1 doubles team, and Stanford wins 5-2. So impressive.

Only 4 dual matches remaining. Then Pac-10 championships then NCAA championships. Alex Clayton could go 4-0 most likely then could go far into Pac-10 tournament.

Can Alex make into NCAA individual tournament ?

Hello: anyone catching the UCLA vs. USC crosstown rivery today ?. It's the season finally and as always it's sure to be a good one.. I'm interested in seeing the next year's crop of players rooting in the stands .. Maybe we'll have a good old fashion upset today..

Don't count Dwin out - he has come through in the clutch before and USC look healthy going into the NCAA's. Lucassen is back but they have a strong bench in Grant and Sundling if neccessary.

See these mediocre programs doesn't have a chance against stanford. Pac-10 championships will be Owned by the Boys.

haha you're the best... always good for a laugh .. you do know that USC won yesterday.. meaning they won the Pac10... you would have been correct if you used the word girls instead of boys...

At the start of the season I thought UCLA and Stanford would be better ,but USC proved me wrong .. UCLA for sure next year or year after that.. You still have to remember ,UCLA has a freshman at the #1 spot which means they are not that solid across the board ..

Bradley Klahn did pretty well when he was freshman and won NCAA when he was sophomore. so that argument really doesnt' fly.

For the record USC beat Stanford in the dual match with freshman playing 4,5 and 6 vs none for Stanford. Don't think the PAC 10 will be going there for a while!

Great action here in Stanford today. Watching Ryan play a very good cueto. Great win for brad. Let me tell you, brad is back!

Greg Hirschman had better get healthy before Stanford plays someone good in the NCAAs. Does anyone know his condition?

Beginning of the great things to come.

Senior day NEWS gets hotter by the minute, Go Stanford:

No. 8 Men's Tennis Defeats No. 14 Cal 4-3 On Senior Day
Riding its longest winning streak since a similar stretch back in 2003, the Cardinal (19-5, 5-1 Pac-10) added another quality win to its ledger.

April 23, 2011

STANFORD, Calif.- No. 8 Stanford closed out its regular season with a 4-3 victory over No. 14 California on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium, completing a season sweep of the Golden Bears while posting its 10th consecutive win.

Riding its longest winning streak since a similar stretch back in 2003, the Cardinal (19-5, 5-1 Pac-10) added another quality win to its ledger.

Already a postseason lock, Saturday's victory solidified Stanford's status as the Pac-10's second-place team behind defending national champion and third-ranked USC (6-0) and likely secures Taube Family Tennis Stadium as a host site for NCAA Championships first and second round competition.

Saturday's victory was made even more memorable with a Senior Day ceremony honoring Alex Clayton, Greg Hirshman and Ted Kelly following the doubles competition. During their time on The Farm, the trio chalked up an overall record of 79-42 while making three NCAA Tournament appearances, earning a share of last year's Pac-10 title with USC and attaining the program's first No. 1 ranking in seven years.

Meanwhile, California (12-7, 3-3 Pac-10) has now lost back-to-back matches to close out the regular season. The Golden Bears were taking the court for the first time since Apr. 9.

The tone was established in doubles, as Stanford swept all three courts to take a 1-0 lead. After victories at Nos. 1 and 3, the Cardinal's No. 2 pairing of Matt Kandath and Denis Lin ensured a sweep with a 5-4 (5) triumph.

Bradley Klahn's 6-1, 6-2 victory over Pedro Zerbini at the top spot of the lineup gave Stanford a 2-0 advantage.

California locked up its first point of the contest when Bozhidar Katsarov bested Jamin Ball 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 6 position, cutting into the lead at 2-1.

Clayton followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Nick Andrews over on court three, putting Stanford one point away from clinching the match.

Kandath then made it official, edging Ben McLachlan 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 5 spot.

Stanford is back in action next weekend at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif. The NCAA Championships field will be announced the following week.

Greg Hirschman had better get healthy before Stanford plays someone good in the NCAAs. Does anyone know his condition?

Whit said today that Greg was still slightly injured. He walked a bit funny when I saw him. He should be back in shape in a couple of weeks.

What's with Jamin Ball ? Such promise and with the opportunity he is given, he's not taking advantage of it.

Here's what the regular season Men's team standings look like now that league match play has concluded:

1. USC (6-0)
2. Stanford (4-2)
3. (tied @ 3-3)
- Cal
- UCLA
- Washington
5. Oregon (1-5)
6. Arizona (0-6)

Nobody should be shocked by USC's dominance. I am surprised Stanford pulled out a 2nd place finish and that Cal dropped after a very strong season. Congrats to Oregon for their conference win and 5th place finish.

Ojai is up next weekend, followed by NCAAs, K_I

I hope you were not mistaken by how Greg normally walks cause he does have a funny walk. Do you know the area of his injury?

Yes, he does seem to normally walk a bit funny :), but this time it was more than usual. I don't know the details of his injury, but it doesn't seem very serious. His dad was there, I could have asked him, but I didn't think about it at the time. In any case, I hope he'll be back in form soon enough.

Don't know what's up with Jamin. He played very well last TUesday when I saw him against BYU. He won his singles easily. Very solid doubles player too, he seem to play well with Alex, and it's good to know that Stanford has 3 strong doubles pairs now.

db, what happened to Ted Kelly ? I hope he isn't too upset about being pulled out for Jamin. This is Ted's last year and all. I feel bad for him. Freshman taking over his one and only doubles spot...
