The positive thread - share positive experiences here

OrangeOne

Legend
So much negativity around of late. So many threads about cheaters, bad experiences, sad experiences, etc etc. Not just on the boards, but everywhere - in conversations, in the media, etc etc.

We humans tend to naturally focus more on the negatives than the positives, it's part of our very nature. Focusing on the positives makes life much more enjoyable, and not just bearable.

So here's my little idea.... The positive thread. Share positive, good, motivating or happy experiences in here (tennis, life, whatever - topic doesn't matter!). And yes, this is a little idealistic and hippie, but sometimes that's a good thing!

I'll start: I did a lot of tidying on the weekend and found an old but good baby laptop that had been missing (assumed lost) for some time (18months+). It still works, will be useful to me (and even came straight out of 'resume' mode when I powered it up as if it were only turned off yesterday!). It was definitely my positive for the weekend :)

For the record: I know some will seek great joy in posting negatives or comments as to the pointlessness of this exercise. That's OK - it will be your way of finding a positive out of this thread!. I also know this thread may fail miserably - that's OK too, it won't be the worst TTW thread ever by a longshot!

I drank quite a bit of drinking last night during a company party, but amazingly, woke up this morning...without a hangover. Does that qualify as positive?

Avoiding hangovers always counts as a positive....

Now, given it was a company party night - even more positive if you managed to not 'relate' to either a colleague or a photocopier! ;)

This was held at a restaurant, so no photocopiers in sight. As for relating to my female colleagues, probably okay there too...don't remember so well, but no one has chewed my head off today, so far....

Hmmm.....positive eh? Well, I had a very good sleep last night. I went to bed at a decent time and fell asleep to a Healing Garden cd which always relaxes me and I have a course today that I've been looking forward to for a few months. The class is full but they have managed to squeeze a friend into it since I will share my workstation with her which means (whisper, giggle, gossip) all day. :)
TP, I am very impressed with your feat and the fact that you drink Mountain Dew - great choice of soda. Phil, glad to hear you had a good night (even without the infamous company party photocopier antics) and OO, this was a great idea. Nifty even - I will choose nifty as my word of the day and see how many times I can get away with tossing it into my casual conversations before someone calls me on it.
Hope everyone has a positive and uplifting day today and shares their experiences. I have a giant cup of coffee waiting for me at the college and some brand spankin' new gel pens to break into today - love gel pens - they are so nifty!!! :D

Here's a little positivity for you, OrangeOne:

I broke my foot in May of last year and hobbled on it for quite a while... it was misdiagnosed for months and I thought it'd never get better. Finally in December I was told to wear an aircast all day (take it off to sleep & shower) and that it might take 4 months to heal. Couldn't play tennis or anything b/c of the cast. By February or so, I was getting pretty edgy not running or doing anything very active. So I asked the guys in the fitness section of this board about swimming. They pointed me to an awesome book/DVD about that, and I gave it a go (I was a horrible swimmer, BTW).

Just a few weeks into trying it, I was amazed at how much better I was doing. Swimming really was enjoyable now! So, I continued on doing that with the broken foot for another month, into March. My next doctor's visit I was taken out of the cast (13 weeks total), and given the green light to run, ride my bike, and play tennis--anything that wouldn't cause pain.

I could always ride my bike, and running was okay...but now, now I learned how to swim. So I thought, triathlon! And I turned 30 this year, so doggoneit I was going do one. I've been training a little over a month now, I'm going to do my first triathlon in July.

Here's the real irony: I never thought I could do a triathlon because of the swimming. It was just torture. I tried a few times and it was just not fun. However, because I broke my foot, and because of the great recommendations on this board, I finally had a reason and a means to learn to swim better! And now I'm set to run my triathlon in July and fulfill a goal I've had for years.

So kids, even something as bad as sitting in a cast and waiting for a bone to heal can have a silver lining. And now back to our afterschool special....

My 9-Ball (pool) team, named "Flying Donkeys" (after an Italian football club) is finally taking off....

After a bad start to the season (1-4) we're now at 7-5 and are holding the last playoffs spot!!

I played with the PS 85 and it loves me back
I bought 2
I'm hired to work at a tennis academy
My first tournament is in 2 weeks time

I've finally saved up enough money for a downpayment on a small townhouse and am planning to buy this summer.

When I was four I put a set of headphones on and then plunged the jack into the grounding plug on a wall socket.

I have actually never had an ordering problem. I mostly buy shirts and shorts from TW. It used to be a pain to send back cloths before they started adding those return labels.

Very inspirational story, Craig! :D

Good luck on your first triathlon!

SF this one confuses me. You're saying this is a positive because you plugged it into the earth and not the active? Or....??

Here's a little positivity for you, OrangeOne:

Craig: That was an awesome story, and it rings true personally as well! I've had 'completing a tri' as a latent goal for about 8 years now, never properly acted on it, and swimming is the main leg holding me back too. So I have to ask: What was the book/DVD that helped you? I'm buying it in a second
if it's still in print...

Positive for the day here: It's a fantastic day, literally the birds are tweeting and the air has that crisp almost-winter feel, and yet it's very sunny....

Great story, Craig. What was this book/DVD that dramatically improved your swimming? Do let me know - I am genuinely interested...

Craig man great story.

Wemic - Hope you get the house

My postive experience, I won a fiver off a mate by serving over 100 MPH. score!

Ok here's mine:

Negative: I was playing against this guy, my racquet slipped out of my hand and cracked, although I didn't notice it. Halfway through a match the next day I noticed a small crack and switched right away.

Positive: I pulled out the old Prostaff 85 and played some of my best tennis. I later went to the Yonex dealer who replaced my RDX for a Ti-80 for 40 AUD, and I got to keep my old one which is still semi-usable :D

Nice, very nice story, Craig Sheppard. Congrats on everything (but the broken foot). Dont forget to keep us updated on the forecoming competition. :)

Orange, jay, Ano (sorry to not list all of you)... It's called Total Immersion swimming. Here's the book:

http://www.amazon.com/Total-Immersi...4117565?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1176257544&sr=8-1

and here's the DVD:

http://www.amazon.com/Freestyle-Mad...8646417-4117565?ie=UTF8&qid=1176257544&sr=8-1

The guy who wrote it/developed it is Terry Laughlin. I have to give the guys on the board like chess9 the credit for pointing me to it. (Look in the Fitness forum thread title "Swimming"). It really is AMAZING. The book is more about the philosophy, the DVD more about technique (although the book is great, it's hard to visualize the technique sometimes w/o seeing it on the DVD).

Just as an example: When I started out, I couldn't swim 2 full laps in a 25m pool w/o being worn out. I was just doing it all wrong, come to find out. I would say within 6 or 7 trips to the pool, I swam 8 laps w/o stopping. I can now do the full race distance of 750m (almost .5 mile) without stopping, can do 18 laps of my pool, and am building confidence for the race. All because of that DVD and book. I can't recommend it enough.

haha now that's a good day of tennis! Your opponent probably thought you had some rigged ringer racquet in your bag...oh it is, a PS 85!

Thanks for posting it. It seems you've probably scored a few more sales for the dude :)

Happy training!

I hope it does man... the guy seems like a genuinely nice guy, and I think if I remember right, at least one poster has met him/knows him personally and said the same thing. I like his whole approach/attitude/philosophy.

I moved up to Rung 12 on my local ladder. Been working out to be fitter as well as improving my game. 12 has been the highest rung for me, was previously in 15. Goal is 10th rung and go from there.

I opened a can of Mountain Dew...... with one hand!!!!

Negative would have to be that mountain dew isnt available in this country, but i have had it and its great.
Positive is that we have irn-bru instead and i have realised just how lucky we are that we have it.

I'm about to plan tennis tonight, and I scored a gig tomorrow night subbing for a comp team too. Potentially two nights in a row of unexpected tennis for me :)

For lunch today, the plan was to get out and walk to Subway, about 3/4's of a mile from my office. So, I'm almost there when I instinctively patted my back pocket and realized that I had left my wallet in my desk drawer. I had 101 yen in another pocket-about 80 cents-not quite enough for a Subway sandwich.

So, I walked back to my office to get my wallet, and with the few minutes remaining of my lunch hour headed to the nearest convenience store for a ham sandwich and Cup 'O Noodles. What's positive about this, you may (or may not) ask? Well, I walked about a mile-and-a-half and burned off a few dozen calories or so, and I feel that much better for doing it! I look forward to continuing my contributions to this thread;-)

Just what does a Subway sandwich go for in Japan, Phil? I'm curious, I expected something like $10 b/c everything's expensive there.

Always good to get some unexpected exercise. Thumbs up.

our team had a small doubles tournament and the two freshmen, my friend and i, won it and we won free jamba juice :]

Sweet! Congratulations. MAN I miss some Jamba Juice! They're not out here on the East Coast (at least I haven't seen it), I liked it living in California. My only beef with Jamba is why do they have to sell those giant portions! I wish you could just buy a 16 oz or 12 oz cup.

Amen...until you've lived here for a bit, it's constant sticker shock. As I recall, Subway sandwiches go for 500 yen for the half and 800 for the large size-so $4.20 and $6.70 respectively (and both are slightly smaller than the US versions). Not bad by Japan price standards.

They don't call them footlong and 6-inch? That's almost a travesty! ;)

OK, the positive thread.

I've recently met 3 people from the boards. Santolg, JavierSergio, and dr punk. All very cool and it has been really neat meeting people from the forum.

Currently, we are trying to set up a date for Oscar, javiersergio, dr punk, no skills and myself to play some round robbins.

We will be known as the South Florida Chapter of TW. :)

I'll be sure to post some pics.

This past summer was awesome. I had just moved to Washington, leaving a ton of friends behind. I immediately joined a tennis club in bellevue and got on the jr. team. I also started playing team tennis which was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made. I made a ton of new friends and our team won the district championships along with getting 3rd in state!!

Everyone should play team tennis!! With the game being an individual sport, its great when you can get together with your friends and travel around together to play tournaments and represent your club.

Well, I successfully fell down the stairs without getting hurt, and strung a racquet. Ummmm, also my Dad's racquet came from TW. (Redondo MP)

I just got some jigsaw puzzles for the computer and I, of course, set them to the most difficult level. They are huge and I basically have to try one piece at a time but so enjoyable and less mess than the real deal. I have spent about 3 hours on the first one and have little more than the edges completed........I'll keep y'all posted. LOL.

But it's Japan...so, the sandwiches are called 15-cm and 30-cm subs. Really! Doesn't have the same ring as "foot long" though..."

Yesterday at the football game (soccer) there was a streaker:p
What a nice thing to do in front of 10.000 people and on national tv.
And it was a girl.....

I finally drop out mutimedia 2+1 speakers, and buy hi-fi (marantz amp and wharfedale speakers). WHAT A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE

Day 1 of 2008, and my local gym was open, so I went for a weights session.

It....was....great :D

(And it more than made up for the fact that today is the first day in 7 that I haven't played tennis :))
