The Prince Phantom 93P is a gift to us from TW - My Review/AMA

I'm also thinking of picking up the 14x18 93P and 18x20 Phantom Pro 100 sight unseen...

The Phantomphilia is real. :/

Me, too. I thought my holism was cured with the 93P (18x20), but I can't help being interested in the 14x18 & the PP100 18x20. I wish there was a way to play with both arms. Too many nice Phantoms and not enough arms to enjoy all of them.

Also tempted to just pick up a 14x18 to play around with on the side bc it’s a really fun racquet, between the demo credit TW is offering and reasonable trade in estimates for my old Yonex racquets collecting dust (reasonable for the convenience of not selling it myself on the internet), it’s getting hard to resist lol

Those are total counts - so 7.5 grams of lead total.

I'll take some pics and measure weight/balance/SW tonight

Cyclone 17 at 48 lbs (strung by TW, one piece)

So it's 12.6oz 7HL

So, basically the exact same strung weight as a stock Wilson RF97A, but slightly less HL. Any idea what the SW is on the 93p 14x18 with that lead amount and placement? I owned an RF97A and loved the way it hit, but it was just a little heavy and a little stiff for me. I think I could get used to the weight of the 93p if it was a little more comfortable on my arm. And I always wished for a little more spin with the RF97A. Guessing that 14x18 pattern would do the trick.

RF97 is a spin monster, this will not have more. But it is definitely more comfortable and feels more swift. Stringbed feels less generous but more precise.

Swingweight is about 340

I was playing with a Prince Graphite II (14x18) when I got my RF97A last year and I got noticeably more spin with it than the RF97A. I never played a full bed of poly in my personal RF, though it had fully poly when I demo'd it before buying, and I definitely got more spin with the PGII 14x18, particularly on kick 2nd serves. I was kind of hoping the 93p 14x18 would have similar spin to the PGII because of the 14x18 pattern.

My leaded up 350SW 93P feels no less tanky than stock RF97, and it is certainly more comfortable.

It's true that 93P needs more help from the weight. But you should at least try it apples-to-apples with RF97.

93P comes 11 grams lighter than RF97 at same balance.
Since I was getting insane offers for my mint 93P's, i've decided to take your advice and modded them close to my RF97 specs.
Hitting with them tomorrow am. You made some very good points!!! Thanks.

Prince 93P (361 grams, 10pts HL)
RF97 (356 grams, 11pts HL)

Serves and backhand slices were even better after adding weight to the 93P. The RF97 allows me to hug the baseline and hit everything on the rise ala Fed, while the smaller headsize of the 93P forces me to move back a little and take fuller cuts at the ball. I definitely benefit more on my topspin and slice backhands with the larger RF97. I serve way better with the 93P.

Hit with both versions briefly. The two have about the same power level. The 14x18 plays a bit firmer, is slightly more forgiving, has bigger sweetspot. The 18x20 plays more 'pure', takes better preparation, and is more satisfying when the shot is well struck. Both are very nice classic mids. Probably too much to play with as my main, but will definitely add one to my mid collection. Probably the 14x18 becuase of the unique string pattern. To me hitting with a mid is like re-calibrating your strokes, which is needed from time to time.

This thread is making me reminisce about my early high school days with my POG mid.

Never had a POG back in high school in the 80’s, but picked one up used last year, strung tight with a no-name multi. Felt... ok. Finally last night I restrung it with some leftover Kirschbaum Max power 16g (1.30) at 38 lbs. to compare it to my 93P 18 x 20

Played with it this morning and - Wow! This racquet just jumped to the front of the line in my bag. All the shots I wasn’t quite making with my Phantom 93P were connecting with the POG. I had more touch, and more pinpoint accuracy somehow, and was able to get more spin to keep my balls in the court. I didn’t feel any loss of control at all! I’ll have to keep playing with it to see if it was a fluke, or maybe I’m getting better or just had an “on” day, but I was very happy with it today!

I may need to get that 93P 14 x 18 now!

A POG better than the 93p ? Mm

@TheOtherBecker ,
Which POG 90? 1 stripe, or 4 stripe with "90" at 12 o'clock, or 4 stripe with "Midplus" at the tip, or with "Straight Shaft on the throat and "Midplus" on the tip or "Tour" on the throat with Midplus on the tip?

1 stripe, grommet/bumper strip in good shape. [emoji2399]1984. Original leather grip 4 5/8. Likes long walks on the beach.

Also have a graphite Pro 90 and a Graphite Powerflex 90 I want to re-string. Thoughts?

14x18 means constant restringing :)

I guess then that the Kirschbaum max power was inadvertently a good choice considering that they pre-stretch it so it shouldn’t die as quickly, right? Anyway, I’m not really a string breaker, so it’ll be interesting to see how that works for me

How was 17g Prince Vortex?
It's a good string just not my favorite in this one. It feels good right after stringing but the tension maintenance left a bit to be desired. When stringing these at low tension, the drop after a hit was very noticable. For the price it's really good. If I re strung my rackets all the time I'd consider it but looking for something with a bit more bite and better tension maint

I wanted to love this racquet, but it felt very slow and clunky to me. Anyone else feel this way. It's not the weight, the specs were right in my wheelhouse. I don't know, maybe I should give it another shot.

The 14*18 demo feels slightly less solid than the 18*20. Not sure if it's due to the racquet weight/sw variation and string setup, or 14*18 has less string contact with the ball lol.

String breakage is my issue with open patterns.

What were you using before the 93P?

Slow and clunky? Thats odd. Its a thin beam frame and has such a great balance to it. To me, it feels very maneuverable and fast. Whats the balance of yours?

Yeah i thought the comment was odd. My POG 107 is slow and clunky (but packs a big punch). The HL balance of the 93P and midsize head makes it very swift through the air. That's why I really like it as a serving stick. For its SW I can get it moving very quickly.

Yeah, I know it's really odd. It makes no sense to me either. I normally use a weighted up Liquidmetal Radical MP. The Phantom should feel faster.

Has the 93P completely cannibalized the TT 95? The TT 95 used to be a forum favorite, but it seems like nobody mentions any more.

Thin beam yes, but it does have a healthy static and healthy swing weight. The 93P is a players frame, it is not a light tweener frame. What matters is that the specs may be sooo different from your current frame that it throws your mechanics off. Mod the 93P as close as you can to your current frame and see what happens then. Good luck.

I think I understand. It may be an acquired taste. I remember about a year ago when I was getting back into tennis, I demo’d the Pro Staff 97 and it felt sluggish, heavy, and dead to me. At the time, I settled on a Prince Warrior. A little later, I tried the 93p, and it felt kinda ok, but boardy and harsh outside the sweet spot. I settled on the Prince Tour line. Then I got hold of a Phantom with looser strings, and it started to make sense to me. Now I’m a Phantom addict.

I liken it to when you put an ice chip in a glass of whiskey, and it opens up the flavor profile. Giving a Phantom a little less tension can do the same. Or maybe just a little more time to get a sense of the feel.

What racquet are you coming from? The Phantom 93P feels very maneuverable for its weight, but I suppose if you are coming from something 300g or less it might still feel more sluggish. Also, measure your Phantom's weight and balance. Maybe it is out of spec.

Just got note from the friend who got me my 93P from Singapore. It seems the Prince distributor in Singapore is not planning to bring in the 14x18 93P and 18x20 Phantom Pro into Singapore. Oh well...

No, I use a weighted up Head Liquidmetal Radical. The swingweight is at least as high as the phantom is rated. I only did a two day demo of the Phantom, so I can't weigh the one I used.

it doesn’t matter if it’s odd or not, that’s how it feels to him. It’s funny all the posts telling him “You can’t be feeling that.”

Fwiw, it is a little slow and a little clunky, compared to modern day racquets

Whats funny is how you missed the point.

Nobody is questioning his experience. We are simply curious if the specs are off on his particular frame. Thats it. I haven’t seen anyone tell him he “can’t be feeling that” or attacking his post in any way.

Additionally a major appeal of this frame is how fast it is for its size and weight. Thats what drew me to it in the first place, from a modern PA+ at stock weight. If someone is not having that experience, no problem, but asking if the frame is off spec should not upset anyone.

Oh yeah, I don't feel attacked haha. It baffles me too. Just one of those weird things I suppose. I'll probably give this racquet one more demo to see for sure. Good to see so many people loving a mid though, even if it isn't for me.

Ok cool, it was not my intention or (most likely) anyone else’s to tell you how you feel about a frame you are using..lol. Surprised that even came up.

But yeah, the main thing about this frame is that it SHOULD play fast for it’s weight. If that is not the case for you, I don’t think you will find much value in using it. That’s why I suspected maybe the specs were off. If not, hey at least you got to give it a shot. It’s a really fun frame to play with, even if just for a demo.
