The Pro Staff Classic 6.1 mutual appreciation club

Does anyone know if Wilson has now changed the recommended stringing tension for the PSC?. Virtually all of their newer racquets in the 95-100 sq inch category recommend 50-60 lbs. now. I have one strung at 57 lbs with a gamma multi and a Wilson Shock Shield grip, but still get some tennis elbow sometimes with it.

String it lower, 50 lbs should be fine.

I have found the Wilson Shock Trap vibration dampener has helped me as it goes across eight strings. I string my PSC's with Solinco Tour Bite, 17 gauge, at 65 lbs. I have used Vokl Cyclone 19 (orange colored string) gauge and liked it a lot too, but I rely on the shock trap to help with vibration reduction.

Just getting back into tennis after about 30 years off and read through this thread as I recall getting my PSC late 1991/early 1992. Actually based on the buttcap code (XEZ) it must have been 1992 according to Sangelier’s observations. I never knew that there were other iterations in the name as mine just says Pro Staff Classic. I can’t recall if it came with a leather grip but it must have because mine has a poorly applied synthetic replacement grip on it now which no doubt was done by me lol. I recall disliking leather grips back then having had one on a PS85 that I unfortunately got rid of at that time to go with the more modern beam and headsize of the PSC which I still loved playing with but didn’t have the feel of the PS85.

It’s a little funny when I read now that people can’t handle the weight of a 330g+ racquet I was often out on the court 3+ hours a day for 5 days a week in the summer albeit as a teenager and it was never an issue. I play with the latest Blade 16x19 now and while I get more spin and easy power due to poly strings/new tech I miss the feel/feedback from the PSC.

Putting some poly in the PSC honestly modernizes it quite well, so long as you can still handle the weight.

I have a 16x18 PSC I had just strung up and I'm super excited to hit with it on court. There's no weight added that I can tell, other than having a Wilson leather grip; I had replaced the original grommets as well. Total static weight comes out to 370 g. Is this normal or did I get an outlier? I'm used to playing with heavier sticks, but this thing is a chunky beast. Feels harder to swing than some of my wooden sticks that have a higher static weight.

I felt that way too but noticed when I tried a heavier racquet again my swing changed too dramatically with the new racquets to be able to go back

I see these on the auction site and get so tempted. It's just that getting replacement grommets are not easy and most of the these for sale are pretty beat up unless you want to pay 500 bucks for one in really good shape.

That seems fairly normal I believe. These, and Ultra FPK of the same era, are my 'modern' racquets of choice when I'm not using woods. Everything new seems waaaaay too light to me.

I have 5 of these, haven't weighed them in a while but I just strung one and since I had the postal scale there in the shop I weighed it. L4 grip, leather, no overgrip, Klip Legend 16 gut mains and Ashaway ZX pro 17 crosses. No dampener on it when I weighed it. 366g.

My “Pro Staff Classic” was right at 357g strung with a beat up cushion aire grip which was surprisingly right on spec. When I swapped it to a Fairway leather grip I think it weighed in around 365g or so yours is not too far off in terms of static weight.

Just weighed another, L5 grip with Kimony techni-leather (I prefer L4 and this brings it pretty much in line), no overgrip or dampener, Klip Legend 16 gut mains with Grapplesnake Irukhanji ((the flat ribbon stuff) crosses. 362g.

I should add that I'm fairly positive that my Ultra FPKs are all a bit lighter. Not by a huge amount, but slightly.

I don't know about recommendations from Wilson but I'd say experiment and find what works for you. I string all mine (PS classics) around 60-63 mains and either same or a pound or two less crosses. That works for me. I've tried them down in the low 50s and it just doesn't work - for me.

Many people LOVE these racquets with syngut. I can't play these with syngut to save my life!

I'm assuming we're all talking about the most common 16x18 versions. I just grabbed a 'stretch' really cheap specifically to chop it and see how the same racquet in 18x20 works out. The non-stretch 18x20 seem exceptionally hard to find in the US and on the auction site the pricing for one (when they do show up) is just ridiculous.

just leaving this here - I have a set of 6.1 classic grommets, if anyone knows how to scan and replicate them

The grommets sold for one version of the 6.6 (at least I should say, that's what the old labeling says) are also a match, albeit a bit 'off' in color. I have a couple sets of those, and have used them. I suspect there are others that will also work perfectly as a drop-in. For the 16x18.

I'd bet 'tennishaven' Mark could give you a compatible list in about 3 seconds flat.

Thanks for the advice. For some reason I no longer have any elbow issues with it, and it is still strung with the same string at 57 lbs. I might get it restrung at 55 next time. The gel grips really help (I am still using the Wilson Shockshield, but Gamma makes a great gel grip also).

Try those Tourna pro gel tire tread grips. Super nice, I used to make fun of them because rec players like em, but I got one on a used frame and honestly fell in love lol.
