The Rafael Nadal NoTournament Count-Up

Consider this your go to place for Rafael Nadal's missed tournaments.

Since there are so many threads concerning Nadal's absence cluttering the forum, I decided to combine all of them into one. This thread will be regularly updated.

Nadal's nagging knee problem is forcing him to withdrawal from a string of tournaments. This is not the first time his Nadal's knee has bothered him in his career.

Nadal did NOT play Olympics
Nadal did NOT play Toronto Masters
Nadal did NOT play Cincinnati Masters
Nadal did NOT play US Open
Nadal did NOT play Davis Cup Semifinals
Nadal did NOT play Shanghai Masters

  • Nadal has skipped a total of 6 consecutive tournaments to date
  • Nadal has not played a match since the 28th of June

"The truth is I really don't have any idea and when the time comes my knee will decide and if the knee is fine then the captain will decide" - Rafael Nadal

"I'm not shocked about the news [Nadal's Davis Cup withdraw]. I'm still hopeful that he'll be okay for the rest of the year" - Roger Federer

"Everyone wants that he's okay. Honestly, if I were forced to choose, I hope he can play. That would preset Spain on the court with the best team. Obviously if Rafa was playing it would be very difficult to win on the ground but in any case I hope it is." - John Isner

"Don't worry. Nadal will come bounce back stronger than ever to win the Australian Open and Roland Garros next year. From there on he will be in a lock to win Wimbledon and US Open, becoming the first man since Rod Laver to grab the Calendar Grand Slam. 2013 will be Rafa's year. You'll see." - NSK

Why are you so obsessed with RNadal? It is important when players are actually playing, not when they are absent. I don't see why its worth a thread lol. The tennis world is bigger than RNadal. Djokovic has proven he can win whether RNadal is there or not.

Coming from the mouth of someone who cannot post a single message without mentioning the word "RNadal" at least once... The irony is simply overwhelming.

Also, anyone who has watched pro tennis for a decent amount of time will agree that Nadal's prolonged absence is definitely worth discussing.

This very post is the definition of cognitive dissonance and irony.

Vpunch is trying to work through his RNadal obsession. I believe he made a post yesterday where he didn't mention RNadal, but I could be mistaken. :)

so Adolfman is back.. that rnadal is a nice touch, however he does not manage to hide himself very well!

When I turned on the TV on June 28th just in time to catch the last two games of Rosol's victory, I had no idea it would be the last time I'd see Nadal all summer. If he never comes back, at least I witnessed the final moments.

AHAHAHAHA

This post came up in the dictionary when I searched for 'irony' (true story).

People need to quote it in your face every time you enter a 'Will Djokovic win the 2012 US Open?' thread to inform us about what time Nadal usually ties his shoelaces in the morning, and how it is an open-era record.

IM laughing so hard right now this isnt even funny!!!!!!!

Nadal did NOT play Davis Cup

  • Nadal has skipped a total of 5 consecutive tournaments to date

A Davis Cup tie is not a tournament; it would involve Nadal's playing one, perhaps two, matches. Also, if you're going to maintain a list like this, you should refrain from adding events to the "did not play" column until they've actually occurred. Right now, Davis Cup is in the "will not play" category.

So far Nadal has skipped four tournaments in which he had planned to play.

ok, 4 tournaments and a DC...happy now?

You know I think Nadal should consider taking the entire 2013 season off and coming back SUPER STRONG for 2014!

he should take 5 years off just to be safe and then come back and win every GS and masters after that as he will be refreshed and have the best mental strength on tour. Also a record

I feel like this would be a lot less of a big deal if Uncle Toni would just stop with the "Nadal will be back at the next big tournament" thing. Did he honestly believe Nadal would be ready not even a week after the US Open? I feel that is unfair to Nadal as it makes it look like he takes tournaments like Montreal, Cinci, and the US Open lightly, and it is also unfair to Nadal's fans who are hoping to see him come back. I also don't know whether or not it's just a facade, possibly to placate everyone's fears about Nadal's future, but he almost always seems to think that Nadal will always come back bigger and better, and sometimes he does, but then he just ends up out of the game for more and more time.

Well, perhaps Nadal will play DC...as it is not confirmed if he will play or not....in any case, I wonder what is really wrong with Nadal....it is all quite odd.

Except that counting this month's Davis Cup tie as an event Nadal "skipped" is rather misleading. Last year, he declared that he wouldn't play Davis Cup at all in 2012:

"Next year I will not play. Next year is a very complex year. It's an Olympic year.

"I have been, for many years, one of the players that plays the highest number of games in a year, and I don't want to over play.

"So next year, since it's an Olympic year, my participation in the Davis Cup is impossible.

"Thank God Spain has a good level of players, and there are many good players that will replace us that play really high-level tennis."

The Davis Cup didn't come back into the picture for him (speculatively) until after Nadal skipped the Olympics and the North American hard court season. If he had remained healthy, presumbly he would have stuck to his original plan of not playing DC, so DC isn't really a casualty of his layoff.

-I don't know what rock you have lived under for the past 100 years, but Davis Cup is definitely considered as a proper tournament and will count towards Nadal's streak.
-Nadal's withdrawal from the Davis Cup has been confirmed

A Davis Cup tie is not a tournament, "proper" or otherwise, your insults notwithstanding. What you mean by "is definitely considered" (note use of passive voice) is that you so consider it, but you are mistaken. And "will count" is also merely your own opinion; I have already pointed out in this thread that Nadal in 2011 announced that he wouldn't play Davis Cup at all in 2012.

wth are you talking about?

toni and team nadal expressed hope that he would play DC.

so, given their inclination to play, and given that he has to skip it because of injury, then yes, he is skipping DC.

what is wrong with you?

It's a direct quotation from Nadal from December of 2011. How short are people's memories around here anyway? Last year, Nadal said definitively that he would not play Davis Cup in 2012. It's only after Nadal skipped the Olympics and other tournaments that people started speculating that well, maybe he will play DC against the United States as a replacement. If Nadal had never had his current injury, he still would not have played DC because he never intended to play this year. If you're unfamiliar with this history, I suggest you do some background reading before posting again.

GTFOH

his uncle said 2 weeks ago rafa was training and they hoped he would be ready for DC

they have since said rafa will not be ready..hence he will have to skip it

wtf does what they said last year about DC have to do with their intentions this year?

why is it so hard to admit Rafa has had to skip DC along with the next 2 months of the season????

Please explain how Davis Cup is not considered a proper tournament. I am sure that I including the rest of the tennis world would like to hear your opinion.

He'll probably come back in Abu Dhabi at the start of the year. I hope that and Doha will be enough preparation for AO.

Anyway, as Almagro said, the most important thing is that he will have time to recuperate so he comes back the same player as he was.

Yes, I guess coming back for an exo would be fitting, somehow--provided there are no golf or poker tournaments at the same time, of course...

Would be nice if to have a running total of the points he is losing by not playing at well.

I think he is playing a dangerous game. If he slips too far down the ranking then he'll get a tougher draw.

He will probably finish the year at number 4, then it will depend on his results in Australia.
He'll start practicing in November so he'll have plenty of time to get in shape for the start of the year.

I do actually wonder if Nadal will be ready for the Australian Open. I'm not entirely sure myself.
