The Raonic serve

Raonic's 2nd serve isn't on the level of Sampras. And 1st serve means nothing. Every dog and his puppy has a big 1st serve, and look where it gets them. Raonic has never won a set vs RNadal, after 2 matches, both on hardcourt. RNadal hasn't even been taken to a tie-breaker by this mental midget.

raonic seems to miss a lot of first serves in big moments, all the matches i've seen of his. i'd definately rather have isner's serve

Hey, guess what.

The universe doesn't revolve around your beloved RNadal. Please stop bringing him up in every god damn post.

Raonic is just Gulbis, but with some interest in actually playing pro-tennis.

Gulbis isnt Raonic by any measure. take a look at the difference in temperament and stride . Gulbis is fidgeting all the time while Raonic is way more calm and collected and mentally sturdy.

Agree, they don't strike me as similar at all...also Gulbis is a Gulbistard, and a weenie

Yet Raonic will make it further in the 2012 U.S. Open than cry-baby Nadal, who's out icing his knees after the spanking he got in the second round (!!!) of Wimbledon.

hey clueless , they played when :

raonic was ranked 200 ( tokyo 2010 )
raonic was ranked 30 (tokyo 2011)

now raonic is a clearly improved player and within the top 20 .... let's see how nadal deals with him now ....

LOL @ considering the match where raonic was ranked 200 that seriously !

yes, raonic's 2nd serve isn't on the same level as sampras' , but its more than good enough to put him in the 2nd place as far as 2nd serve points won go, even without that solid a ground game ....

Let's see how RNadal deals with him now? Raonic is Berdych-lite, and RNadal has won 11 straight matches (including only 3 on clay) over Berdych.

raonic is not berdych-lite ... berdych's serve is not even close to raonic's .....

So wrong....

Those Milos-Rafa matches aren´t telling us much. 1st mach - Milos was what 200 something in ranking miles away from what he is now

2nd match o.k Milos was better than in 2010, but the fact is he was after serious injury, he lost to Weintraub in DC just few days before....

So Rafa played ,,baby,, Milos and post-injury Milos, haven´t played ,,normal,, Milos yet.

About his serve, 1st serve means something. Agree there are many guys with huge 1st serve and can´t do much besides, nice example is Taylord Dent- amazing speed on his 1st serve, but no placement, low FS% , can´t do much when those bombs came back. Milos howewer has decent game to backup his serve already and will develop in next years. About those 1st serves, his 1st serve right now is biggest - best 1st serve on the tour,-a lot of aces, unreturnables-fastest 1st serve regularly from top 50 at least, amazing slice serve, his 2nd serve is one of best too, can go for aces-unreturnables, great kick serve, whole package only thing that makes his serve probably little bit worse than Isner is FS%

I have no complaints about the actual serve as a shot. The problem is if the 2nd serve comes back, he's going to lose an awful lot of points from the baseline against a premier baseliner. And that 2nd serve will come back, plenty. And I've seen RNadal play against many oafs, and its a horrible matchup for the oafs. You need wheels to play RNadal. Raonic doesn't have them. I know Raonic improved since he played RNadal, but he can't improve the weakness that RNadal exploits - movement.

But serves alone don't win slams. Raonic is weaker than Berdych in every aspect outside of the serve. Raonic is clumsy.

so ? he doesn't need to win a slam to beat nadal, does he ?

raonic's serve as a shot will trouble nadal far more than any single weapon of berdych .....

and raonic is better than berdych at the net as well ...

Hummm... And where's Rafa now? Milos is playing...

Your premise is Raonis is going to miss a lot of 1st serves against Rafa. Say who? Gazing in your crystal ball for this answer?... What about when Raonic DOESN'T miss a lot of 1 serves. What's Rafa gonna do? Wiping the dust of his shoes?
Remember in tennis, the serve starts the point. So if on any given day, the hottest server will beat the hottest returner. Just the simple law of action-reaction. Your Rafa is clearly in the reaction, am I not right?

Yeah, that's what I meant in showing interest.

Other than that, they're two production-line, 6'5" bombers.

his serve is not just a bomb but really speacial. the same league as isner, karlovic and roddick.

those guys not only serve hard but also extremely consistent. in comparison to that for example wawrinka can also serve 135+ but his serve is inconsistent. sometimes he hits 60% and sometimes he hits like 45% and gets broken 3 times a set by djokovic.

the big 4 Servers rarely have those lapses, their serve is always consistent despite them hitting hard.

career first serve percentage:
isner: 68%
ivo: 65%
roddick: 65%

raonic is also in the 62-63% range. those guys can blast it but they are also extremely consistent. that is what is Setting them apart for other big Servers.
