The Rugby World Cup 2019

Starting on September 20 in Japan and ends on 2 November. Anyone going to watch any games?

International 15 a side rugby union is one of my biggest interests apart from tennis and I love the power, grace and infuriated by the rules and ref’s decisions made. Still, for me that is part of the appeal of the sport. It’s a growing sport, but obviously most popular in England, Wales, Ireland, Scotlan, NZ, SA. It has declining appeal in Australia because they‘re not winning at it anymore;) and has its fans in Italy and Argentina and of course the Pacific Islands, whose players get poached by the bigger nations.

Anyway, calling any Rugby fans on here to comment or any new to the game to ask questions if they don’t understand the game and want to know more.

Looking forward to it, but I hear the pitches especially the main stadium are not up to international standard.

I hear the grounds are quite hard and it’ll play fast rugby. Squads like NZ have chosen a less bulky back row and 3 7s to ensure quick ball. Not seen the quality of the pitches, apart from when NZ played Japan last October and the pitched looked fine. They do play a league out there in Japan, so am sure the pitches will be of international standard and good quality.

Rugby looks more dangerous than boxing
I mean giant bodies and zero pads ??

I will watch a few games for sure. Should be a great World Cup. Will be interesting to see which team will win. Over the years the winners have been shared around with NZ winning the most (3 times ) and favourite again with South Africa and England as next favourites.

Looking forward to it, i won a ballot for tickets for one of the semis so will be there for it. Hopefully get to catch the All Blacks in that semi would blow my mind if it happens.

Enjoy. I was in Japan in March and had such a great time, including loving the food and bullet train experience.

Still remember my matches I attended at the last RWC including the QF, semi and final. The final was the best. Got to see McCaw and Carter’s last game in an All Black shirt. That All Black side was the best ever and will never play again.

Yep, injuries are a sad fact of sport, but more so in rugby. Refs have been pretty bad so far. 17/18 stone guys smashing into each other. Concussion is a big problem and players retiring after several and not recovering from it. Padding? Well, some players wear some support under their shirts, although not padding in the same sense as NFL.

I saw a little of it and it does not look pleasant

I like some American football
The Collisions in Grid Iron are brutal as well. Like car crashes, despite the padding and helmets, which do sweet FA in terms of protection from concussion. Both Rugby and Grid Iron are collision sports and the the collisions are part of the appeal of the sport. Like fans of boxing liking boxers getting their heads smashed by padded fists, which cause brain damage. We live in a hypocritical world of what we like as entertainment.

All I can say after watching Australia v Wales game is that an otherwise great game was spoilt by the referee who would not allow the game to flow. The amount of time wastages and stoppages and referring to the TMO and giving out penalties was frustrating to say the least.

It's somewhat counter-intuitive but pads create more risk of injury by enabling a boxer or tackler to hit harder.

I see that you are, however, still fantasising about big guys falling on you. More time spent in analysis would be useful.

It is part of the frustration of the sport, unfortunately. Scrums and the time wasted does my nut in. They should stop the clock until a scrum is properly formed and contested.

Nearing the knockout stages. Team of the Pool stages are definitely Japan for me. The other big nations, who will likely win it are holding fire until it really matters. Looking like it's heading for the following quarter-finals:

Japan v South Africa, who will play the winner of
Wales v France

New Zealand v Ireland, who will play the winner of
England v Australia

Still, Pool A could change - Scotland will need maximum of 5 points v Russia, beat Japan, plus prevent Japan from getting a bonus point to go through. I hope Japan can do it and go through, as apart from the All Blacks, they have played the most entertaining Rugby and plus it would give the tournament a boost for the host nation to go through to the knockout stages of the world cup for the first time in their history.

England and France could swap opposition they are playing in the quarters, but France looked frankly very ordinary today v Tonga, so banking on the Red Rose to get it done next week.

Horrible for fans that are traveling all the way there to have their matches cancelled.
Yep now waiting to see if Scotland v Japan and Canada v Namibia are cancelled tomorrow. Decision is imminent. Inspection at 10pm BT and decision by 12pm BST. Going by the pics of Yokohama stadium, at best the Scotland v Japan match will be played behind closed doors; at worst it's going to be cancelled. Shame they couldn't get the matches played in the unaffect part of the country. WR really screwed up in terms of their contingency plans.

I watch but I don't have a clue what is going on.
5 points for a try like a touch down, followed by conversion - kick through the posts which can add 2 points and 3 points for penalties and drop goals. Can’t throw/pass the ball forward otherwise it’s a scrum (where 8 men from each side pack down against each other)

If you can keep that in mind then maybe you can enjoy it more.

This is the first rugby match I've watched in so many years.

England completely dominated the first half against New Zealand. The all blacks fortunate to go in at 10-0 behind. England might yet pay for not leading by more. I would be expecting New Zealand to come out swinging in the second half.

NZ dodge a bullet early in the second half with now 2 tries disallowed from England. Could have easily been 17 nil right now.

Not quite what I was expecting. Thought it would be like most of the stuff I used to watch with the all blacks dominating. England's defence looked great here, they could even afford the one big mistake from the throw in.

I did not see this one coming. New Zealand lost to England in semifinals.
New Zealand underperforming again in WC.
(To underperform for NZ means not being champions).

What a game today and the world champions are dethroned after 8 years. England completely outplayed and outthought them.

Aaand the Boks hold on to defeat Wales 19-16. Now on to another battle of the coaches!
Would have liked to have watched this game but they took it off free to air ( unlike the NZ v ENG game which you could watch on CH10 AUS) and instead it was on Fox,

Great game between the Springboks and Wales, quite an experience watching it live at the stadium.

Will be interesting to see how Jones and Erasmus prepare for the final. Kind of a guarantee Eddie will try to play mind games, but Rassie is no rookie...
Oh - and the pressure is all on England!

End of an era for ABs for Hansen, Read, SBW, Ben Smith, Crotty, and also for Wales, with Gatland leaving, plus probably AWJ’s last game for Wales.

Onto tomorrow’s final. Feeling good for England’s chances tomorrow. Bring Bill home!!
