The Ruud Awakening!

Nick Kyrgios, who has just beaten Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in a match in which the Australian had a 70% first serve success rate and won the point on 79% of those serves. His forehand was also on song, so Casper Ruud will have to be wary of those two shots in particular.

Kyrgios also concentrated relatively well throughout the course of the match (for Kyrgios). But a solid, focussed opponent can easily disturb his concentration, which is very fragile! In any case, a very good, consistent performance from Ruud should make things interesting tomorrow.

Who is his next opponent?

After Wednesday's schedule was rained out in Rome, Casper Ruud will have to do double duty on Thursday if he is to reach the quarter-finals. His match against Nick Kyrgios has been scheduled third on Court no. 3, with the winner to take on either David Goffin or Juan Martin Del Potro on Court no. 1 later in the day.

Ridiculous that they make guys do that. Can’t they just build a roof?

This is just the second time in 20 years or more when a full day’s schedule has been rained out in Rome. They are obviously not plagued with weather patterns that would warrant the type of financial outlay necessary to build a roof or two on the top courts.
Hadrian would demand nothing less.

So, how many games in total for Kyrgios today? 8-B

I fear Casper will be toyed with. But Nick may get too cute, and let Casper back into the match.

Kyrgios went down to the much superior talent. Nick could feel that once Casper started caring, he would run away with the match. So he took the easy way out and threw some chairs rather than be exposed.

Let's see if he can make the lanky Argentinian tire later this lovely afternoon.

But was he defaulted because of the chair throwing or was the chair throwing because he got defaulted?

I think this

Nick put together a nice escalating combination of verbal abuse --> racquet abuse --> bottle abuse --> chair abuse.

The sum of this scored him I believe his first ever DQ, undeniably reminiscent of one of McEnroe's more famous DQs, a nice little homage from Nickie.

Yeah i just read he got a game penalty because of the racket smash. Then he got so mad because of the game penalty that he threw a chair, which gave him a match penalty. Some guy...

A new career high singles ranking for Casper Ruud of around no. 62 after he reached the last 16 in Rome earlier today. A win against Juan Martin Del Potro later today would take Ruud inside the Top 60 for the first time.

Let's give Delpo the Ruud Treatment, too!

What a crazy day for tennis, everyone playing two matches - like in junior tournaments :D

lol, didn't notice at first, but looks like Casper still afforded himself the big celebration on court after Kyrgios walked off:laughing:

Was the umpire in the chair when he threw it? He’s always into helping propel people, no?

He’s playing Schwartzman? I could have sworn Dark Helmet was playing Berrettini???

Casper Ruud wasn't very sympathetic towards Nick Kyrgios after the Australian was defaulted from their second-round match in Rome yesterday:

Norwegian Ruud said he thought Kyrgios had “got what he deserved,” when asked about the matter later. However, he believes the ATP, which governs men’s tennis, should now take action. “He thinks he can do what he likes,” Ruud added.

“He was getting more and more angry. There’s been a lot of talk about it with other players. I think there should be some hard punishment, there’s been some other stuff as well. He should be suspended for at least six months.”

Apparently Casper Ruud had a change of plan and didn't try to qualify for this week's Geneva tournament in which he had originally planned to take part. He will have direct entry into this year's French Open where he reached the second round in 2018.

here's Gulbis's 12 last match results. 9 of those 11 losses came in straights, so no excuses whatsoever if Casper cannot get it done.

Berrettini is obviously the big hurdle in his way for a Roger match. He's on a roll on clay at the moment and would be the clear favorite against Casper. But he lacks big time experience, so it's not an insurmountable challenge.

Then, if he gets through to Rog, he can just hit top spin to the backhand and yell ¡ Vamos ! and everything will sort itself out.

Rafa been very generous and actually been spending time w Casper outside tennis too. They are both avid golf players.
Casper and his family moved to Spain. Toni Nadal, the most winning slam coach of all time, coaching Casper now. You can even hear Casper got a Spanish accent on his English (the norwegian accent on English gone, funny)

Ill be cheering for Lord Gulbis next match though, sorry, I am not that much of a nationalist.

A very good win earlier today for Casper Ruud in first-round men's doubles action in Paris where he and his partner Miomir Kecmanovic faced the much more experienced pairing of Ivan Dodig and Édouard Roger-Vasselin, the no. 12 seeds. After a first set in which the two younger players at times looked uncoordinated and during which it rained for several games, the Norwegian-Serbian combination settled down and fought back superbly to easily take the second set before edging a tight decider for a 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory.

Casper is on his way.

This is where it gets decided, the possibility of a once-in-a-career opportunity: Playing Federer in one of the big stadiums of Roland Garros.

One shot
Or one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted
In one moment
Would you capture it
Or just let it slip?
