The Sampras running "Banana" forehand

I think Becker's was maybe even better, probably because he could get even more spin with his western grip.

Nadal in 2007 was using that shot all the time for a few months, he must have only recently learned how to do it and was doing it in every match for a month or two, and he was getting more movement out the tramlines round the net and back into the court than anyone I've ever seen. Although Becker didn't have luxilon.

I think Sampras's sidespin was as a result of his footspeed and not from his swingpath or his eastern grip. I think Becker got the sidespin from his extreme grip but had little footspeed, and Nadal has both and luxilon giving him ridiculous spin.

^^ Bud Collins always referred to it as the "ol' Newcomb buggy whip". So maybe Newcomb.

I would say that both Becker and Lendl were better at it than Sampras.

Lendl did have a great one as well, Becker had a great one but agree Sampras' footspeed was more explosive. I do think Sampras' athleticism made his one's look the most spectacular.

As for the buggy whip, I know I am being silly but I always associated that with the cross court forehand, never thought of it for the down the line shot, as in the video. But yes I have heard of that and Robert Lansdorp was an expert on it, encouraged all of his players to use it.

Is it the same as the "banana" shot?

You might be right. The buggy whip is the short cross court pass with heavy top and maybe some sidespin.

Becker was phenomenal at getting the massive side spin on the DTL shot. Case in point: Edberg-Becker W 89, 6-5 second set, Edberg serving at 40-0. Curls in, turns the match around.
