The Second Set Let-Down

Anyone every experience a let down in the second set after winning the first set?

Played doubles last night. I'm about a 3.5, of my oppponents one guy was probably about a 3.0 and the other was a 3.0 just bumped to 3.5. My partner was probably about a 2.5 - but hey! the indoor court time was free.

Anyway, in spite of going down early, we managed to come back and win the first set 6-4. First set, I was playing well, held my serve - hit an ace at 40-15 - and hit service returns for winners. I had to carry the load as my partner was shakey at best.

On to the second set, next thing thing I know my shots are going long, I got broken on one of my service game and I can't hit a volley to save my life. We lose the second set 6-3.

So what do you do to prevent a let-down in the second set?

I've been on both sides of the Second Set Comeback many times.

I've decided that the problem is that I get conservative and stop doing what I did in the first set. In the meantime, the opponents are going for broke. I've tried to counter this by consciously putting a little extra on every groundstroke and volley. In reality, nothing objective is changing, I'd bet. But it does work.

I had a second set let down on my 1st varsity match last year...really disappointing. Handily won the first set 6-2, on our way to a 6-4 victory, when my partner choked. Then somehow the other team's worse player finally got his serve right. Then I choked. Then they finished us. Third set we lost 3-6.

First varsity match too.

Hmmm.... I started out conservative in the second set then started going for it and nothing worked. Think I need to stay more even.
