The Shape Of Things To Come: Denis Shapovalov!

Shap's mind is elsewhere, I think. Maybe he'll turn it around.
His mind is always elsewere. He can't keep it together a whole match, plays top 10 tennis for a set and then just falls apart time after time. His own head doesn't allow him to close out matches, I strongly suspect he suffers from ADHD or some other mental issues...

I agree, and my profession centers around mental health issues and testing/teaching/treating those with bipolar disorder, Asperger's and autism, so I'm intimately familiar with these things. Only a physician can diagnose it, but when you've spent 25 years around them, you're hardly clueless.

I have absolutely little doubt that both Denis and Rune are bipolar. No doubt whatsoever both have ADHD (not that uncommon in pro athletes). The fact they've both been top 10 despite their issues is testament to their incredible ability. Remove the malady and they challenge for slams.

That's not an excuse for either of them, merely an observation based on decades of professional experience. Nick also has both issues, but a host of other mental health issues. I love all three partially because I understand their issues and understand what they've overcome.

ATP not giving Shapo much respect. From their website today:

Can't find his matches on TV either. It's maddening. Yeah let's stick him on TC Plus so our viewers can see Zhang and Dolehide play...
TSN in Canada is carrying all Shapo/Felix & Fernandez matches. Shapos matches so far without commentary and today will probably be no different as he is scheduled at the same time as Murray.

Tennis Channel in the US are allergic to showing men's matches

The only time they do it is when Alcaraz or Djoko are playing, or two Americans like a Chris Eubanks/Marcos Giron match.

Maybe there will be some improvement under Shap's latest coach, Javier Piles, or maybe there already is.
I'm looking forward to this match with Arnaldi, who seems to be playing very well. Go, Shap!

Agreed, all too often the high-risk player looking good on the high-light reels is given too much talent credit. Not that Sinner isn‘t often there as well.

Shapo has a big hole in his game called return and is often too aggressive with his second serve.

Arnaldi docet that so far things are more of the same.

Let's face it, |Shapo's last year or two don't merit him a lot of top level coverage.
Gauff may be getting good results, but I'd much rather watch Shapo's matches. Who wouldn't?

Just when you think he might be slowly turning things around, he bombs out to some mug.
Arnaldi is a decent, solid player. And Shapo's backhand is looking pretty good lately.

I'd rather watch Mackie McDonald-Raonic (the most boring match up I can think of) than any WTA borefest. As Pat Cash famously said, "women's tennis is just two sets of rubbish."
Well, then I'd say you are missing out. It's not all "rubbish." There are some good players with nice games to watch (Muchova comes to mind, and Parry lately), and couple of fun characters (like Putintseva and Ostapenko), and a few that are just beauty in motion as they play (Giorgi, Kalinskya, Martic...)

The guy is a mental midget.

Yesterday as he was walking off court he seemed to be going ago it with a fan. He made a gesture with two fingers that signify person has a small male private part.

Denis Shapovalov will more than likely soon be at a point where a return to the challenger circuit seems like a good choice. However, with his kamikaze approach to tennis matches success is not guaranteed for him even in challenger tournaments. His inability to learn from his losses is striking in someone with as much talent as he possesses.

He's got a promising future as a doubles specialist, at least; but I think the nookie's still got tight hold [ooh!] of him, for now. Get it together, Denis- I think / hope you can.

He just wiped TTPas off the court last week, too soon to write obituaries

..and Shapovalov is out to Giron 1R in straights at the US Claycourts. Clearly building on recent successes.

Gaaahhh.
The conditions for this match were brutal. 20-30 mph winds on clay and you could see that he was never comfortable. His effort level, concentration, and ability to adapt his game to the conditions were all pretty much pitiful. He's certainly not doing himself favors with regard to future wildcards and appearance fees. Getting beat in the first round at Houston does not bode well. Hope he's able to return to form, but right now he's headed in the other direction quickly. I agree that playing challengers could be really good for him at this stage.

It's really sobering to think that Shapo beat Rafa two years ago in Rome and is now losing first round in a 250 in Texas. So much talent and yet he's regressing.

Another wildcard for Denis Shapovalov, this time into next week's tournament in Bucharest, Romania, where, in a first-round match between two unseeded players, he will take on the very volatile Frenchman Corentin Moutet. The two left-handers have only met once before, in Estoril in 2021, when Moutet won a close three-set match.

In the Tiriac Open (the tournament is organized by Tiriac), Moutet wins again, 6-4 6-2. Ouch.

Earlier on Friday Denis Shapovalov beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6(3), 6-3 to reach the third round of the Masters Series 1000 tournament in Madrid. In his next match the unseeded Canadian will take on Alexander Zverev, the no. 4 seed. The German currently leads their head-to-head 5-3.
