Was it a line judge calling or chair ump overrule? I know he directed his comments at the chair ump. Denis did challenge because he did get a replay. I just couldn't understand why it was even called.
I went back and re-watched. Denis had a BP and he hit a ball that landed in the middle of the baseline. The line judge called it out, but the chair umpire quickly overruled. Kevin's shot immediately after went in so they had to re-play the point. The crowd wasn't happy.
It was unfortunate. Denis could have won the point had the correct call been made, but he could have lost it too. He also had a BP in an earlier Anderson game in the 5th set but couldn't convert.
Overall, I am so impressed with how he played. He came out on the court to win. His volleys were great, he was mixing it up and his ground game was on too. Best of all, his ROS has gotten so much better. The crowd clearly loved him too. I am even more excited about his future.
Ok, so the line judge got it wrong. That was a bad miss. How they could miss something like that one. It was clearly in. I get the close ones, or maybe where the player blocks the judge, but you had none of this. Electronic line calling cannot get here quick enough.
they showed the line judge after this call and he looked to be about 75 years old. Oh my. Maybe big Kev was in his way.

Denis to play Davis Cup this week-end followed by 8 weeks of tournaments : St-Petersburg (250), Shenzhen (250), Tokyo (500), Shanghai (1000), Stockholm (250), Basel (500), Paris (1000) and Milan (exhibition).
Maybe a first ATP title this fall ? I'm hoping for a first match against Federer or Djokovic during this time also.

Oof, very full schedule. I hope if he has a deep run then he takes the next week off, but I guess that's something to "worry" about if he has a deep run!
Davis Cup up next. Assuming he plays both singles matches (seems likely, he's Canada's #2 singles player) he'll have a chance to get revenge on Haase and what *should* be an easy second match against whoever the dutch #2 is (all candidates ranked out side the top 200). Raonic also has been looking good lately, so Canada definitely the favorite for this tie, both of their singles players are ranked ahead of anyone on the dutch team.

In that scenario, they would not play the 5th match. They need to play one match on Sunday even if it's all decided on Saturday.

I doubt he will be there as he was unceremoniously dropped as DC coach, and maybe as Shapo's coach too.

I never thought of him as being 'unceremoniously dropped'. I presumed that it was because he had his hands full with Denis' burgeoning career. But I was surprised at the choice of Frank the Tank, a brand new father, and still on tour. So maybe there was something going on behind the scenes.
In any case, because it's none of my business, I would take Laurendeau over other Tennis Canada coaches. (I'm thinking of one in particular, who is partly responsible for guiding young Felix, and who didn't help another Canadian's career as much as I had hoped he would. Let's just say that I don't think coaching mental strength is his forte.)

Yeah, I probably am being unfair to someone. I don't like how that DC decision came down because Nester was the logical choice to take over, a position he deserves having done so much for Canadian Tennis. I read that Nester said something like "hopefully I can become assistant coach or something with the Davis Cup. "

Interesting comment from Nestor. That guy has put in more than his dues! Almost 20 years of DC ties. Does that make him a great coach/team leader? I don't know. I hope it's not politics.

Well, all the players would respect Nester, not that they wouldn't Dancevic, but he seems a little junior to me. There was some scuttlebug when Marty got dumped that it was a maneuver to give the spot to Dancevic before Nestor retired and got the post. Nester would be a first class coach having played more DC's than almost anyone in the world. IMHO.

thanks for the gossip re: new Canadian Davis Cup captain. I didn't read anything except Marty said he was too busy with Denis and they named Frank.
I am not sure of when Nestor announced his retirement, but he sure has had a tough year. He seems to have a new partner every tournament and hasn't won much. Not sure if someone with a long career would make a better coach than someone like Frank D.

I watched Denis' match last night. A thriller in five sets. Amazing comeback by our fave guy. Marty was not there, and in an interview a few weeks ago, Denis said Marty wouldn't join him for the rest of the year.

Not only did he come back from 2-0 sets down, he also came back from a break down in the fifth. Wow.
It's great that he seems to be good in 5-setters. He's only been on tour for a year and a half or so and his 5-set record is 3-2 now. He doesn't fade in long matches, and as he gets even more fit he'll be even better. That'll serve him well in some Grand Slams I'm sure.
Of course, it would be nice if he could straight-set guys like Haase but pulling out wins is good too.

Is it possible that it isn't a 'simple' back problem for Marty L.? We've all seen him with his sun-shielding protections. I hope that this doesn't imply a much more serious health issue.

That's not quite my takeaway from yesterday's match. The takeaway, for me, is that he ran into a player who has a particular style he had a hard time handling, and he made mid-match adjustments and regained control of the match. This is the first time I've seen this from Shapo. I think that match was a real breakthrough for Shapo. Look for a Shapo/Theim final next week in St Petersburg.
