The Shape Of Things To Come: Denis Shapovalov!

Something happened when Denis broke his racquet, LOL. It's as if he threw away his nerves, and just said: "let's get this!". Well done. I don't know his opponent at all. Never seen him play. I think he's unseeded as I'm sure Denis was the only seed left. Mind you, he took out PCB, which I'm so glad about since I didn't want Denis playing him.

This is Denis' second final of the year, as he was in the finals in doubles in Stuttgart earlier this year. I think his doubles play has really helped him a lot. His net play has vastly improved.

I hope he can do it tomorrow against Krajinovic. How has Filip played this week ? Better than Shapo ?
He’s played one more match than Denis and defeated Ruud (straight sets), Evans (3 sets), Nishioka (straight sets) and now PCB in 3.

This will be Krajinovic’s third final and he also will be trying for a first title. His first ATP final was that incredible breakthrough from qualifying at Paris-Bercy’17 so he has a comfort zone indoors in the fall.

Congrats Shapo! May it be the first of many. First Canadian to win the title. Also, first final and first title. Didn't lose a set all week. Interesting that he didn't mention Mikhail at the end, but maybe that doesn't mean a thing. Congrats to him again. Well done!

It's not the world's greatest tourney, but he's playing in Stockholm in 2 weeks. He's currently the expected fourth seed behind Fognini, Pouille, and Fritz, with Verdasco, Albot, and Opelka right behind him. Del Potro also plans on returning for that one. He's got a shot there.

Verdasco withdrew from Stockholm and is replaced by Stebe, that’s a big opportunity for Denis now !

So happy that Denis took the opportunity ! He is really improving since august, especially with his slice backhand. Excellent serving today also, and great return, he could have win the first set more easily.

It took 8 semifinals until he won his first semifinal, but won his first final, I am so happy for shapo. The road to the title was pretty easy regarding opponents, but the mental aspect is the most important part. Hopefully he will win many more.

Currently 22 at the Race, maybe he could get back to 20 before the end of the season ? But his path in Vienne will be tough.

This is just the beginning, first of many more to come. Coincidently the same place Tsitsipas won his first title a year ago. In the years to come the two of them will dominate tennis. The future’s bright.

Shapo played great today winning a staggering 21 of his 22 first serves which were in 67% of the time and 7/11 of his second serves and he won 21 of 42 returns. Shapo played good today and Stebe played bad. The biggest thing is he'll be fresh for a very tired Sugita tomorrow. Expect Shapo to dominate tomorrow and expect him to win this tournament on Sunday. Don't bet the house but bet the car, at least.
That's my post from Friday, it's a good lesson in I'm always right and you should have bet the car, at least.

Another 1HBH tournament winner

You're reading it here first:
The next step for him, which I would recommend, is to do what Sampras did after 25: S-V on both 1st and 2nd serve. Not with the frequency of Pete, still much more than today. The quality of his serve is high enough, and he's progressed at the net. No reason to while the time away :Dat the baseline, consuming time and precious energy.

So happy for him also. I like what I'm seeing in his game. He's playing far more consistently since Winston-Salem, and since Laver Cup. I recall the announcer saying that McEnroe told him he just has to be more disciplined, and that's what he's doing. Many things have improved this year - serve consistency. his net play, and his ROS. I like that he's saying playing flashy just doesn't cut it for the long term. He's got the message now. Consistency and discipline win titles and sustain careers. I hope he has a bright one ahead of him. Canadian tennis is in good hands. Even though it doesn't get much press, he's one of the few NextGen who's been in both a singles and doubles final this year. Impressive. Anyone have a link to the post match interview?

No rest for the wicked!

Shapo (unseeded) to play Busta in R1 of Vienna. Tough draw.

IMO I give better than even odds of Shapo taking a stay at WATLYNM lodge. It's tough for players to keep up their intensity and their physical form after a win, and I would not be suprised if either fatigue or a mental letdown gave PCB the edge here.

If he gets by PCB, then it's either Kukushkin or Coric, neither of whom have been good lately. But, then it's likely Dominic.

PCB played as many sets as Shapo I think, making it to the SF's and he had back issues. I'd say he'll book a spot at WATLYNM some other day.

Not feeling as much at risk for Shapo as the other NextGen champion from Sunday...Rublev plays #6 seed Felix.

I would have called PCB the bigger threat had I not learned of his back problems from @Sparlingo. Rublev has been quite solid recently, and FAA has been sub-par for a while now, though he is at least well rested. Rublev's trip from Moscow to Vienna is still shockingly far (almoost 2000 kms!), but the flight is relatively short.

It’s more about highest highs followed by lowest lows...Rubylev was a guest at WATLYNM in his only chance to stay. Also, I’m sure the after party in Moscow on his 22nd birthday last night might have been a lengthy affair.

I think that's insightful, usually a golf player does poorly the next round after shooting a 59. Has something to do with chemicals (natural ones) in the human body like testosterone, etc.

I really hope this victory gives him the confidence to take his fantastic game to another level and get on a roll.

I'd love to see Shaps lead the charge to push the old farts into retirement finally!

Nice to see Youzhny with him, but it was clear Denis didn't want to be there. Some of those errors looked intentional to me. Maybe I'm wrong?

A letdown, both physically and mentally, is very common after winning a title. Not surprised at all, and I expect Shapo to be back to his expected level by his next tournament.

Shapo has been drawn to play Gilles Simon in first-round singles action at next week's Rolex Masters in Paris. The winner of that encounter between two unseeded players will face Fabio Fognini, the no. 11 seed, in the second round.

In the doubles event in Paris, Shapo and Rohan Bopanna wiil take on Benoît Paire and Fernando Verdasco in the first round.
