The smallest cat in the world

So, "we" want a cat, and I am already dreading the consequences from what will follow. Which is the smallest domesticated cat that you know of and which cats have the most tame character? It would be helpful, if it is something the size of a mouse, but I am probably too optimistic, so, hit me with some suggestions, before I have to face "other" ideas? We have had experiences with cats before, and to be frank, I have had many times unholy thoughts about situations with them (Siamese and Angoras).

Apparently that is the wild version:

Oh you lucky lucky man!!

 no way!!!!! You need to get the right personality cat and I bet you will love him!!! They are low maintenance as well. What can possibly be the trouble?

Suggest me a cat with the right personality. I reserve the right to return it to you within the legal period, if I am not satisfied with the product.

Cats are everything. Get a baby and it'll listen to you and you will be able to "communicate" when it's older 8-B

The idea (in theory, don't get me wrong) is that it remains a baby, even when it is not a baby anymore, hence the thread title. I see that he? turned you into bed. That is the kind of things one has to put up with with them.

We have always had female cats. I really want another cat now but I live with my parents and they don’t want one. So you’re lucky to be getting one and I’m jealous lol

I know the game. Had all my previous cats from almost new borns (4-5 weeks old). Bond, lol. You mean to say that they train you what to do, and then pretend to agree with what you tell them? Aaaanyway, I love cats, I just can't deal with their presence without having to think about other stuff as well, and that gives me a headache right now.

:cautious:

You "know the game?" Then go the extra mile and get one that's very, very young. The younger, the better socialized they'll end up. Further, a kitten when (gently) handled before its eyes open becomes very socialized. @MichaelNadal is correct.

Chill breeds include Ragdolls, Bermins and British Shorthairs. You're hung up on "small" but for my money the biggest is also one of the very best: Maine Coon. These guys are flat-out awesome.

You get yourself a very young Maine Coon kitten and pair it with a very young, socialized Newfoundland puppy and you are sooo good to go. Big animals, big hearts, no problems.

If you are looking for a roommate to share the costs of a rental, please let me know. I will send you one. She is small-ish, doesn't eat much and can cook. It comes with a promise for a cat in the near future. I am not selfish, share the luck, so to speak.

I don't remember how young we had the previous cats (has been a while), but they must have been very very young as the last one was getting pushed by its brothers and sisters (a total of 5) for milk. Perhaps not as young as you suggest (can't remember being exactly still blind, but my memory is fuzzy).

I thought about the character of the cat as a major point, hence my mentioning of it (the Siamese are EVIL). We will see, still curious if there are smallish cats.

A friend has a Maine and it is adorable, so I will have to talk to him. Thank you for the suggestions.

Cats are soo good though to have as pets. My cat I had whenever I was stressed she knew and would come up and rub her face on mine to try and calm me down. They are so affectionate and once you have a bond it’s hard to not love them. I bet once you have a cat you will see where I’m coming from.

I don’t agree that getting the youngest one makes a more socialised cat. Had many cats in my life. Getting them 8 weeks old, mother w babies, 12 weeks, and grownups. Makes very little difference. It’s like they are born w a personality. What I have noticed is their personality is a bit similar to their parents. Looking for a kitten I would want to know how the parents are.

When it comes to size you just have to find a small cat breed if you want that. What’s available in your area. And again here the parents is everything. If the mother is small, her daughter will be too. Girls are smaller than the boys.

at last some good news today! :D
another human being will soon be domesticated...

will it be an indoor or (in-and-)outdoor cat?
As with humans, the neutered males tend to have the most agreable personalities. American Shorthair is a very pleasant cat, usually grey tabby or silver tabby coat.
why 'neutered'?...

Norwegian cats are big too :D Think one of the largest breeds. Viking cats. They are also super friendly and trusting. To the point they are too nice and will easily be kidnapped. I want a cat to hunt and also territorial, have some of that wildness in them! My previous cat was half Maine coon and the smallest cat I’ve ever had. She had amazing fur though, like mink or something.

My previous cat Bianca. She is small. So beautiful. Green eyes, not albino. An outdoor cat and a great hunter even for her size. She would take down mice, rats, birds and snakes. Small but the greatest hunting cat I’ve ever had!
I don’t feel ok for a cat to be only indoors.
On the contrary my sister and her huge cat Jonas. He weights more than double of Bianca, he got quite a personality, talks all day. He is an indoor cat and a special breed suitable for that. If you get a breed not suited for indoor only the cat will feel miserable!

Ghost, I get that your 'homeland proud' and all . ("Norway this!!.....Norway that!!"):-D and that's totally cool with me but Norwegian Forrest Cats are "easily kidnapped" there??!!! ewww..

Anyway nydelig dame, if your "smallest cat" was half-Maine Coon(!) then you must've breed it with a church mouse because Maine's are the biggest of all kitty-cats.

(and this from a UK site, not American):
* The Maine Coon is THE largest domestic cat breed that does not have a recent ancestral relationship to wild cats in the way that the Savannah cat does. They are personable and friendly without being overly demanding, and can weigh 15lb for females and 15-25lb for males. They are also very long and tall!

* The Norwegian Forest Cat is a longhaired breed hailing from Norway, and one that is no stranger to cold, harsh climates! At first glance they appear similar to the Maine Coon breed, and are very popular both in Norway and the surrounding Scandinavian countries. The Norwegian Forest Cat is very long in length, and grows to up to 15lb in weight for females and 15-20lb for males.

Norway has bigger pussies (bare tuller) but not cats. . ; )
That Norwegian Forest Cat in the pix is very beautiful-looking though (and you didn't need to say that the 'lady' in the pix wasn't you). . : )

The one American shorthair that I know is quite the character: afraid from strangers and wild when doing things (the owners are a very very nice and quiet family). It is a male cat, but, yes, they look stunning.

You are laughing, but now I have to put my bonsai trees behind bars!

Eventually it is going to be an indoor cat that can be let out in the garden. I don't think that it is a good idea to let it go places as there are woods all around and there are wild boars and foxes in them (so illnesses are a big concern).

I wrote one of the biggest breeds didn’t I? It’s no competition! They just aren’t as known as many other breeds so I wanted to show, cause I think they look nice.

All cats should be called Lucifer.

Congrats on your new purchase. You may need to spray some of your lovely aftershave in order to hide the smell when it inevitably leaves you presents around the house.

Thats great ;)
We actually picked up a cat today. So into all this cat stuff recently :giggle: A quite big black long haired cat. Looks like he comes from the Norwegian breed because of his ears, nose and the size. Biggest cat I’ve had so far. His name is Ferguson as he purrs so much, named after a tractor because the sound the tractor makes. He purrs if you just talk to him and he likes to cuddle so much! Friendly cat, and he is a good mouse hunter! Had a mice in the house, figured it’s time to get a cat again.

Only time i had a cat pee outside the litter box(inside the house) is when I was pregnant. The cat would sense I was pregnant and probably afraid to lose attention. Had to drown her w love and extra attention and she quit w that. Only lasted like a week. Have had cats most of my life.

My old cat, when he was about 4-5 months. Even when he grew up, he remained rather small, like a female and smaller. i remember mom's friend brought her Persian to mate and he couldn't reach the target and bite her neck at the same time.

Let's see:
Many people are allergic to cats (so good luck when inviting guests over)
Litter Boxes
Hairballs
Shedding
Front claws (unless they are already de-clawed)
Vet bills
Need housesitting when on vacation

All that aside, we used to have cats (both died from old age) and for the most part, they are pretty good pets and low maintenence.

Ha! We used to have a main coon and currently we own a 2 yr old Newfoundland (they were never together however). Murray the main coon was full of personality and quite sociable, but also was leery of strangers and would hiss at them (not usually bite though). After we started having our own kids and as he grew older he very much mellowed out and became much better with visitors. Our Newfie is a big lovable dog, but she's also quite protective whenever a stranger comes over. We have to warm her up to them before she trusts.

Legend
We have two Ragdolls.

Older female Bluepoint, whom we took over at 6 months.
Had been a bit terrorised by young kids. She's very regal and refined.
Loved strokes and rubs on her terms..
Hates being brushed, fights the brush but will never bite or claw a human.

Younger boy Ragdoll, a bi-colour.
We had him from very young.
He's a total softie. Knows a few routines and fun to do things.
He loves being brushed and having face and head rubs by socked feet!
All over vigorous rubs and tummy rubs, front paw massages.. Never the back paws though, too tickley.
He talks a lots, esp when he's just come in. Tells you all about what he's been doing.

They are an essential part of the family.
