The top ten greatest sportsmen Federer is 5th!

Didn't someone once say something like tennis is a game while motor racing is sport because you were quite likely to get killed.

Admittedly, nowadays motor racing is as safe as...well, anything.

If a sport is defined by athleticism, then F1 is probably more of a sport than tennis. The training and diet regimen for F1 drivers is known to be incredibly strict. The drivers sweat out about 3 kg of sweat during a race and require the fitness to keep their mental focus every second. Not to mention the quick reflexes and neck strength needed in moving the car around corners. They are all probably capable of running marathons in respectable times.

Yeah I know this is about current greatest, but all-time greatest I'd have to say Babe Ruth easily. Forget MJ, Tiger, Gretzky, Ali, Tilden, Roger, Laver, etc...

NOBODY ever dominated their sport like The Babe did.

How can Phelps make the list if Usain Bolt isn't on it
He's much more famous and lets face it running is better than swimming.

Tiger Woods anyone  And what about Mike Tyson

**** List

Phelps won 8 gold medals in the last olympics (setting I believe 7 new world records), most ever won in a single games and has the most medals overall of any athelete ever if I am not mistaken, Bolt has done nothing close to that. Also...Usain Bolt is NOT more famous than Phelps, especially after all the coverage Phelps got at the Olympics, which I remember Bolt getting almost none in comparison. As for Tiger...thats a coin toss. I'd probably have to go with Jack N. over Tiger in the golf Department. As for Mike Tyson...sorry no...didn't he bite off a guys ear? Doesn't sound like Sportman material to me.

And where is Tiger Woods on the list??

The guy is the most recognizable/influential sportsman on the planet, and a giant in sport.

tiger woods is only popular in the usa and some first-world countries. the rest of the world does not give a rat's *** about him.

Definitely agree with "The Greatest" being number one, but id put MJ at 3 if not 2 but i know soccer is way more popular around the world, and michael phelps makes the list but no tiger? IMO Tiger woods should b number 10 instead of phelps but otherwise its all good...and just to anyone that mite say anything about babe ruth, no 1 cares about him outside of the US

I personally don't think impact on sport/society should be taken into account.
If you do you always get Ali at number 1.
This kills any serious debate about who is the greatest sportsman of all time.

In purely sporting terms I would have Armstrong, Woods and Federer above Ali.

manny pacquiao is the greatest sportman in the world right now (p4p king), because he's the best at a sport which determines nerves and physical strength

Are you kidding me. What about Stephen Hendry the greatest with 7 World Titles to his name and ranked World No. 1 from 1990-1998. O'Sullivan has 3 World Titles and nowhere near as many No. 1 finishes.

That's because he has a problem with focus, like other hugely talented sportsmen - I liken him to JMac in that respect. You are talking about success, I am talking about raw talent. You are correct that Hendry has enjoyed more success, IMO O'Sullivan has much more raw talent - he can beat most players using his left hand for goodness sake!
