The tremendous sacrifice of Daniel Evans to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Nobody could have ever reproached Daniel Evans for resigning from competing in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, considering several factors. One of them is that clay courts are not a suitable surface for him, and his performance clearly decreases. Nonetheless, what is most noteworthy is that just this week, he was defending the 500 points earned last year in Washington, so it was logical to try to defend them. The Briton decided to go to Paris and compete alongside Andy Murray in doubles, knowing he would lose those points and his ranking would drop from 58th to 169th in the world, putting him in a dramatic situation to participate in Masters 1000 and Grand Slams in the coming month.

Is it really a sacrifice on his part though? Based on his awful season, I'd say he damn well knew he wouldn't come close to defending his 500 Washington points anyway.

That's the biggest drop in one week that I've seen in a while. Going from 58 to 176! I assume he will get direct into Cincinnati and USO since he was ranked high enough at the cutoff date for entry, but the fall season will be rough, guess he will have to play qualies.

The bigger sacrifice would have been going to DC and losing in 1R. Then he would have lost the prestige of playing in the Olympics AND the ranking points and money.

"Why would you make such a decision not to defend the biggest title of your life? Because you want to pay props to someone you admire and play Olympic doubles for no points, no prize money, with a guy named Sir Andy Murray. One of the coolest parts about this Murray story on top of saying goodbye to a legend is this Dan Evans piece.”
