The Trivia Thread

I'm sick and tired of the GOAT debate now, and the relevant threads. So let's see if this idea works. For all I know this thread might just get completely ignored but hey it's worth a try.

I'll start by posting a random trivia question, try not to check wiki or other sources if you can. Once a poster gets the question right, he/she starts another trivia question, etc.

PLEASE, NO bashing and debating of GOAThood here.

OK.

Trivia 1:

To date, Nadal has only lost 5 5th sets (!) in his entire career. Name the year, tournament, round, opponent, and final set score for these 5 losses. (I can remember 4 easily from memory, but the other one took some time...)

Ooops I forgot to start the next trivia. Sorry about that.

Trivia 2:

Nalbadian put an end to a streak in the final of 2005 MTC. What was the steak, how did it compare to previous record, and who had the previous record?

Can't answer all those questions without wiki.
But it was Federer's most consecutive wins in a final (24 final wins in a row stretching back to the fall of 2003). I think Lendl had the previous record around 10-12, but that's pretty much a guess/hint

1. How many years did it take Tommy Haas to beat Roger Federer since the last time he beat him?

2. Who did Leyton Hewitt lose to in the 3rd round of Wimbledon 1999?

I suppose you're allowed to check once you're completely out of ideas.

It's 12 straight finals, both McEnroe and Borg did it.

Who twice beat Lleyton Hewitt in 5 sets on grass in 2001?
Oh, I remember this!
Nicholas Escude, 2001 Wimbledon and 2001 Davis Cup!:)
Now I can ask a question!
On that Wednesday during Wimbledon last year where lots of top seeds lost including Federer, how many players retired/pulled out of their matches?

Off the top of my head:

Men: Tsonga, Cilic, Isner, Darcis, Stepanek

Women: Azarenka, Shvedova

Sir, you dont have the right to ask question since you did not give the correct answer to last question. :)

As far as I can tell, only 2 male players in the Open Era reached the finals of the very next Slam after winning their first (discounting guys like Laver who won their first Slams in the amateur era). Name them?

One is easy (Murray), the other one isn't...

I think Murray is the only one. I heard about this record a little while ago. I'm pretty confident no one else but Murray has achieved it. Unless you want to count Jimmy Connors who who the AO in 1974, didn't play RG, and won Wimbledon the same year. Or you're not considering the AO a "slam" for that time. In which case Connors won his first slam at Wimbledon in 1974 and then won the USO.

Reaching a final doesn't necessarily mean losing it...

Nope, you're right. I figured Connors to be the only other one but forgot about him winning the AO in 1974. I had thought his first Slam was at 1974 Wimbledon.

So Murray is, in fact, the only one. Sorry about that!

Way to go Andy M! :)

1974. He lost to Phil Dent in the Round of 16.

Name the 10 players who have won sets against Rafael Nadal at the French Open.
I could only remember following names without help of the internets:

Federer
Djokovic
Mathieu
Isner
Hewitt
Soderling
Puerta

Ok, this one's not too hard. Try not to use the internet.

In the Open Era, there have been 5 triple bagels that have occurred at the grand slam level on the ATP tour. 3 of them occurred in the same year. Which year was this? For bonus points, name the players involved in these matches.

Brands and Klizan last year...

The other was Grosjean back in 2005 in a sort of heated match thanks to the crowd...

EDIT: Forgot the question.

In the Open Era, which #1 ranked/seeded player has gone out in the first round of a major the most times?

Think it was 1987?

I remember Lendl and Edberg did it, but can't remember who it was against and I can't remember the third one...

Yes, it was 1987.

Yes, Edberg and Lendl did it in Wimbledon and USO respectively. The third guy is quite obscure, pretty much Mustard-level trivia territory.

Well, I know the answer is Murray because I remember this was talked about here but even if I didn't, I would have guessed the answer seeing as the question comes from Mainad

Great thread, OP.

My question:

Connect the following : Laver, Edberg, Hingis, Graf, Navratilova
