Well, I know the answer is Murray because I remember this was talked about here but even if I didn't, I would have guessed the answer seeing as the question comes from Mainad

Great thread, OP.

My question:

Connect the following : Laver, Edberg, Hingis, Graf, Navratilova

One-handed BH? :D

Great thread, indeed!

Yes, it was 1987.

Yes, Edberg and Lendl did it in Wimbledon and USO respectively. The third guy is quite obscure, pretty much Mustard-level trivia territory.

Remember Lendl beating Moir on the 1st round of the US Open that year. Had forgotten about Edberg, and the only other one that came to mind was Bruguera-Champion at Roland Garros (in... 1993, I think?).

Edit after checking--omg, it was Novacek-Bengoechea. The weird thing is that it *does* ring a bell (more than Edberg-Erikson at Wimby). Still, good luck on finding that one (except if you're from Novacek's family).

Another one about Lendl: he once played a GS semi-final in tracksuit pants because it was chilly. When and where was it, who was his opponent, and what was the score?

Wimbledon must be Ivanisevic, Roland-Garros Kuerten, AO must be Edmondson, USO I have no idea, it was never won by someone really lowly ranked.

Probably Agassi in 1994, IIRC he was coming back from a slump and only ranked about #20 at the time. Still not that low compared to the other slams though...

Name the four lowest ranked grand slam winners for each tournament (open era)

Mark Edmondson at the Australian Open in 1976 (Ranked 212)
Gustavo Kuerten at the French Open in 1997 (Ranked 66)
Goran Ivanisevic at Wimbledon in 2001 (Ranked 125)
Andre Agassi at the US Open in 1994 (Ranked 20)

Who saved a match point to defeat the then world number 1, Gustavo Kuerten, in the second round of the 2001 Australian Open?

Both Roberto Carretero and Albert Portas won 1 career title, and both at Hamburg, in 1996 and 2001. Portas beat Hewitt and Ferrero to do his, in impressive fashion.

Who saved a match point to defeat the then world number 1, Gustavo Kuerten, in the second round of the 2001 Australian Open?

Wouldn't that be a left-handed ace machine named Greg, by any chance? ;)

Lendl not getting any love, it would seem... :(

^Just give us a hint.

Oh and sorry Mustard I had to check: it was Rusedski.

In 2012, how many bagels did Federer dish out and who were they against? Also in Wimbledon, how many breadsticks did Federer give out on route to his title?

My question:

Connect the following : Laver, Edberg, Hingis, Graf, Navratilova

Their lovers have been somebody else's lover?

Laver married an older woman who had been married before.

Edberg married Wilander's ex girlfriend.

Hingis's lovers are have beens.

Graf married Agassi who was somebody else's before.

Not sure about Navratilova, but I'd imagine her partners would have had lovers before.

Ok, lets do this:
Bagels:
Llodra at Dubai,
Del Potro at RG,
Djokovic at Cincy,
and Wawrinka at Shanghai (Almost forgot!), so 4?

Wimbledon Breadsticks:
I think 7, I remember the triple breadstick in R1, and 1 breadstick the next 4 rounds?

As opposed to most pro tennis players whose first romantic partners are virgins and then the couples stay together for life?

Thank you for creating an original, interesting thread! I like the OP's idea of going one question at a time, and whomever answer it gets to ask the next question. I'm puzzled why anyone would look up the answer online, as that defeats the purpose of the thread. My suggestion is that if a question can't be answered, hints are given until someone gets it. That will, as someone else pointed out, keep the thread focused. What do you think OP? It's just a suggestion - it's your thread. Thanks again!

Bwahaaha...best answer ever , but not the one I had in mind :D

Can you give us a hint? Please?

Hmm..I don't know how to give a hint for this one without making it obvious, so I will just reduce the number of people on the list (this will also make it obvious I think).

Connect : Laver , Edberg, Graf.

All of them won some version of the 'grand slam' (Edberg won the junior grand slam)?

Correct ! All of them have done the CYGS in some form.

Edberg in boys singles
Hingis, Navratilova in doubles.
The other two are obvious.

It seems so obvious in retrospect. Nice question.

Here's another question: Who is the only player (I think) to lose a grand slam final and get married within the span of a week?

kOaMaster

lendl it is (had to check though whether it was after winning or losing the final) ;)

next one:
which two players did have the most meetings in one single ATP season (open era) and how many matches did they play?

Dunno but going to guess Federer Tsonga, who played each other 8 times in 2011.

Though actually come to think of it something similar happened with Del Po shortly after.

Connect these pictures to get a memorable match.
You are allowed to Google.
Also give reasoning that how you connected these pictures.

P.S. Answer is in the Post # 99. If you still want to decipher this, don't see that post.

on matchday 3, federer seeded 4th bagles nadal in the O2-arena on 22 november 2011 6:3 6:0?

@Nathaniel: I think you are correct. In 2011 I desperatly tried to find a h2h where two players met more of than 8 times (as federer and tsonga did) and could not. not in all the great rivalries or anywhere else. of course the possibility of two "random" or mediocre player meeting more than 8 times somewhen in the 70s or 80s is there.

I still think those two times federer playing 8 matches against tsonga and del potro in 2011 and 2012 a likely to be a record.

If only I actually knew who the guy top left is.

Well. I see that FedEx used the Airbuses a lot so I thought it was maybe a Federer match, but couldn't quite make sense of what appears to be an oxygen tank.

So I'll take Djokovic Troicki US Open 2010 because it seemed like he should win but bottled it... maybe that's related to the tank.

Joseph sounds like Djo and the name Viktor crops up in the same image. There are various references to the US in the montage, even in the top left image regarding colour.

Why? Elaborate to me what each pic depicts. :)

left upper pic: it was a stunning and unexpected performance
right upper pic: includes a "60" = 6:0
left lower pic: a white colored bottle which is the code for oxygen (=O2) (well, not EN appropriate coloring, but enough for me as a hint ;) )
right lower pic: Swetlana Iossifowna Allilujewa died on that very day.

The bizarre thing is that it was repeated in 2012. I remember thinking it was strange at the time how two players were meeting so ridiculously frequently back in 2011 and when it happened again with del Potro in 2012, I can honestly say that I considered conspiracy.

Excellent! It reminds me of the cryptic crosswords which my father always used to like to do.

Wow, I should have looked that one up.

Excellent. The reasoning for first two pics is not appropriate though.

I will disclose the answer and reasoning in next 5 mins.

Okay friends, time is up.
The answer is Federer-Nadal WTF 2011.

The first pic is of Jason Mantzoukas who portrayed the role of Nuclear Nadal in 'The Dictator'.
2nd pic is the flight number of one of Fedex flights.
3rd pic = Oxygen tank=> O2
4th pic = Svetlana Alliluyeva died on 22nd November, 2011the day on whichthis match was played.

Excellent guess KoaMaster. :D

It reminds me cricket terrorist H. Amla. ;)

You know what happened to Dean Jones after that remark?
