Best team in 20 years “title charging” Arsenal is below “circus, unseen crisis” Chelsea in the PL table.

  1. Calm down. We don’t destroy everyone and aren’t one of the best teams in Europe.
  2. No, you weren’t unlucky.
  3. No, you didn’t dominate.
  4. Agreed, you didn’t get the result. You are now out of the title race.

We were the better team anyways I think. Arsenal were not impressive one bit. Arteta loves to make up excuses when his team comes up short, that big chance at the end from Havertz gave him free ammunition to say “We dominated!”

Said it for a while but Arteta is one of the leagues biggest yappers. All talk no substance.

A thrilling contest between Braga and Sporting, certainly the most exciting match I've attended in person for a quite a while, in sharp contrast to the Juve-Napoli borefest in September. Braga's club hymn is pretty catchy, and I still think that their stadium is incredible - I love the fact that it so unique in an era in which more and more stadiums look like shopping centres.

Sporting were defensively all over the place in the first half, Debast was at fault for both of Braga's goals. Bruma and the 38 year old Moutinho (Sporting fans are still bitter that left he left them for Porto in 2010) were a constant threat.

Then Amorim made 3 subsitutions in about 10 minutes which all paid off, replacing Debast with St Juste, and also bringing on Morita and Harder. Morita and Harder went on to score 3 out of their 4 goals, and St Juste was involved in the build up to Morita's goal and provided more defensive certainty.

Amorim said that the captain Hjulmand laid into the players at half-time, telling them to wake up. He himself produced a great strike for the equaliser, plus an all-round 'captain's performance' in the 2nd half.

This 'notice period' with Amorim taking charge of 3 extra Sporting games, during which they scored 13 goals (Man City at home and Braga away are not exactly easy games), definitely worked out well, and has allowed him to leave the club on much better terms, and with far more goodwill from everyone including the fans. Had he (and 5 other members of his coaching team) immediately left after agreeing the deal with Man Utd, there would have been a far more negative and 'frustrated' vibe.

He'll definitely have mixed emotions about leaving a Sporting team this good mid-season though, and not being able to continue on with their attempt to defend their title and Champions League adventure. João Pereira will be presented as Amorim's replacement today. Hopefully it works out well. And hopefully their hierarchy hold their nerve during the January transfer window, telling any clubs that bid below the release clauses for any of their star players, to get lost and come back in the summer for proper negotiations.

Benfica were also impressive in O Clássico against Porto, with Di María and Carreras running riot. Pre-Amorim, it wasn't common for both Benfica and Porto to be looking up at Sporting in the league, and it also wasn't common for an O Clássico game to be overshadowed by anything else in Portugal.

Carreras, like any player that does well for one of the Portuguese big 3, has already been linked with a potential future move to one of a wide array of suitors. I understand that Man Utd inserted a €20 million buy back clause in his contract, when Benfica decided to sign him permanently after his loan spell. Amorim further helping Sporting's bid to defend their league title, by activating that clause in January and taking him away from Benfica, would be greatly appreciated by Sporting fans I'm sure !

In Serie A, it makes me very happy to see Atalanta sitting in 2nd and Fiorentina sitting in 3rd. What a week for Atalanta, with a thumping win away to Napoli, and an impressive CL win away to Stuttgart, and then this comeback win against Udinese. Their equaliser was a well-worked goal.

And it's now 6 straight Serie A wins for Fiorentina, with a brilliant hat-trick by Kean. I much prefer Moise Kean over the despicable and incompetent former Blackburn manager Steve Kean. After 5 away games in 19 days, it must have been a welcome relief for Fiorentia to play at home again.

Juve increasingly gaining steam and growing in confidence is a worry. On the subject of Serie A in general, the noticeable improvement of the 'middle of the road' teams in the league in recent years has been very clear to see.

And scored an offside winner v Man Utd

To be fair Macheda handled the ball into the net for Man Utd's goal in that game, so it was 1-0 to Chelsea in terms of 'legal goals'. Plus Chelsea had a clear penalty not awarded earlier on when Neville fouled Anelka in the box. Fergie and the likes of Rio Ferdinand moaned about that match for a long time afterwards, but I never considered it to be a 'robbery' or 'injustice' at all.

It's similar to how Pellegrini was bitter for a long-time afterwards about his Malaga team's heart-breaking defeat to Klopp's Dortmund in the CL in 2013, as Dortmund's injury time winner clearly shouldn't have stood as several of their players including the scorer were offside. However he conveniently didn't bring up the fact that the goal that Malaga scored to go 2-1 up before Dortmund's comeback also should have been disallowed for offside.

The ball hit his chest first so I would always argue ball-to-hand, although am fully aware that VAR today would def chalk it off given the new interpretation of handball if it leads to a goal.

Knowing Utd, he'll either get injured and miss the rest of the season the minute he walks into Carrington, or Luke Shaw will eventually return to fitness and have two or three good games just before the transfer window closes and the club's higher ups decide another immobile forward or winger with no pace is a better signing.

It hit his stomach first, and then his outstretched right arm well above his waist which looked to guide the ball in, and I think it was clear it wouldn't have gone in had it not been for that contact with the arm. Also even by the laws in place at that time, such contact with the hand or arm on the way in, even if accidental, should have been seen the goal ruled out. I remember the talk at the time in 2010 that the goal shouldn't have counted.

So I've never understood gripes from Man Utd about that game (also ignoring the decision not to award Chelsea a clear penalty earlier on), and Chelsea winning it was a fair result.

Regarding Amorim, I still think he should conduct all his press conferences as Man Utd head coach in Portuguese, firstly to wind up Sky Sports and that clown who kept harassing him last week, and secondly because I'm not ready for all of his press conferences to be held in English yet; they're so brilliant in Portuguese.

Who knows how influential different assistant managers are, especially from the outside and without insider knowledge. However a weird part of Chelsea's 2010/2011 season, was sacking Ray Wilkins about a third of the way into the season when they were top. Apparently there was very heated meeting behind the scenes, during which he questioned the footballing knowledge of Abramovich and another member of the hierarchy.

One of Fergie's most genius achievements came that season, beating Arsenal 2-0 in an FA Cup tie with this midfield:

images

The fact that they went into mid-April, with a chance of winning the treble, with that squad which for their ultra-high standards under Fergie was pretty weak, was incredible.

07/08 was essentially won on goal difference too.

Both teams were level on 84 points going into the last day. With Man Utd ahead on goal difference.

Chelsea were beating Bolton, when they flashed the final Man Utd score on the big screen. They had won 2-0 against Wigan, so it was over, despite Chelsea having another couple of minutes of injury time to play. They stopped playing at that point and Bolton tapped one in.

But yes, those were some fun times and great title battles. Hopefully we’ll get another this season! The table is incredibly close, we just need Liverpool to slow down a bit!

Need some dirt on Anthony Taylor. That bald buffoon. Someone must catch him slipping up.

That Man Utd team is scary. Takes me back to Rooney wanting out in 2010, because he wasn't amused at the signings or us not being able to attract the best players. It was sort of like Keane years earlier on MUTV, only Keane was let go, plus, he was not in his prime, still, it did suck.

Roy's rant is hard to find. I love how he still keeps it simple about goalkeepers or not doing your job.

On 29 October 2005, Manchester United were well beaten by Middlesbrough at the Riverside, losing 4-1 in a dreadful showing from Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

"I have seen that happen to Rio before," the Irishman said. "It is poor defending. Just because you are paid £120,000 a week and play well for 20 minutes against Tottenham you think you are a superstar."

Edwin van der Sar: "He should have saved that (a 30-yard goal from Gaizka Mendieta). That was saveable."

John O'Shea: "He's just strolling around when he should have been busting a gut to get back."

Darren Fletcher: "I can't understand why people in Scotland rave about Darren Fletcher."

Kieran Richardson: "He is a lazy defender who deserved to get punished. He wasn't doing his job."

Alan Smith: "What is he doing there? He is wandering around as if he is lost. He doesn't know what he is doing."

Experienced players involved in the game: "The younger players have been let down by some of the more experienced ones - they are not leading. There is a shortage of characters."

"It seems to be in this club you have to play badly to be rewarded. Maybe that is what I should do when I come back - play badly."

The result: "I wasn't surprised by the result, I had been expecting one like this. The players have been asked questions and they are just not coming up with the answers.

"I am sick of having to say it and they are sick of listening to me. They have let down the club, the manager, and the fans."

I've been reading the 10 quotes to get Man Utd fans excited about Ruben Amorim.

Cristiano Ronaldo calls him the poet. Love this name. Can only hope we do get some poetry in motion once more. That will be a good time for all.

I would love to be able to do it for you, but just not possible at the moment.

I think it’s 9 points off top, but 2 points from 10th. Which sounds about right.

You never know though, if we’re playing devils advocate.. maybe it’s a Leicester type of season and Liverpool are just in their honeymoon period with Slot. Arsenal and City continue to be rubbish.

We do have that incredible fixture run up until February. If they reel off win after win against bottom half sides, then in January the directors think “wtf, is this actually possible?” and go and get Osimhen, Milan are desperate for Carney and their owners will sell their grandmother if it lines their pockets.. maybe they’d let Maignan go in return.

But that’s an awful lot of things having to go right, a load of what ifs and stars aligning in a way not seen since the wise men.

I'm now in the delusional mode again with the ''worst team in United history'' being only 4 points off top 4. Only four points behind Arsenal's title charge. Wow, when you put it that way, guv.8-B

Yes, positive atmosphere in my head right now.

I got sucked into reading this long article about a United fan trying out Amorim's style in football manager. Really funny guy. I want to see it in action first before I go back to try FM.

Also, to move off topic a bit. I do enjoy the Day of the Jackal. Get Eddie Redmayne signed to United pronto. haha

Shame Mount has gone a bit weird and rubbish. He was ridiculous in that system with Tuchel. Messi was purring over him, he was slapping Madrid in both legs of a Champions League semi, creating the winner in the final. The world was his oyster.

Then he started making TikTok's, hiring brand consultants and it seems the incredible amount of football he played at a young age caught up with him. Maybe Amorim can rejuvenate him.

I was just reading an article about Mason Mount. How the systems are almost identical, and this is when Mount was ''at his most effective.'' The early headline I saw said Mount can be an important part of Amorim's roadmap. He thinks Mount can fit in well in the system. The positive for Mount is no international football and he's back in full training, so gets to be there from day1. All the best to him.

Nice!

It does pose a bit of a conundrum for the wingers. We had the same thing when Tuchel arrived. Pulisic, Hudson-Odoi, Werner, Ziyech and co.

The front 3 was usually Havertz up top, Werner and Mount behind.

Right now it feels like Hojlund is the only one who can play number 9, Bruno is nailed on.. and Mount/Zirkzee are the logical choices for the other spot.

Rashford, Amad, Garnacho, Antony? I don’t think so.

Interestingly I’d say the latter two stand a better chance at wing back. Like Quenda at Sporting, who is a flying winger at heart.

Dalot seems to be nailed on, but the other side feels open. People keep saying “Shaw is back soon”, but that’s a nonstarter imo. His body can’t hack it. Kind of like Reece James, we have fans complaining that he’s not playing that Number 10 in possession, right back off the ball role. And I agree, he would be much better at it than Gusto (and would’ve scored that header yesterday).. but there’s no chance his body can survive the amount of running you need to do to play there.

Shaw can only be a LCB for Amorim imo. Sooo.. Garnacho or Antony?

Yeah, I'd have to agree on Shaw. Malacia might get a new lease of life after being out for 18 months. Strange things at United, not getting a left back was for the lack of a better word, daft. Right now, I'd think it could be Dalot on the left and Mazraoui on the right, or the opposite. They've been switching this season. Again, if it's wingers playing as wingbacks then perhaps it will be a Garnacho.

Love a good mystery, wondering about the wide players. Garnacho has been inconsitent but at least he has showed signs of having something about him, Jeff.

One of those times I'm in anti international football mode. Just want the first game right now, to find out a few things.

Rooney’s “ambition” nonsense was just for him to get a huge deal out of it. He was threatening to leave if he wasn’t the best paid player in the club and disguised it with the “ambition” excuse. Yeah like United didn’t win the league every other year back then. Rooney saw some pretty sh1te seasons post SAF where the standards began dropping and never said a word because he was getting paid very well.

Roy was right in his rant. Players deserve to be called out if they played poorly. Especially at a club where the standards are as high as Man United. Reason they’ve been so bad in recent years is because nobody is willing to call out rubbish performances and if you do, you’re “negative” and “don’t support the boys”.

Yeah, to think we’ve had 3 international breaks, each one of them 2 weeks long.. whilst only playing 11 league games? It’s crazy.

I do still agree with him about some things. When I consider Tevez and Ronaldo leaving at the same time, then we got Michael Owen in. etc Next season wasn't much better, although we did get the under appreciated Chicharito. But yeah. nothing a new deal wont fix.

Goalkeeping coach Jelle ten Rouwelaar has been wished all the best in future endeavors.. Well, that is a relief. Time to go all football manager again, but he's one of the first you click on terminate contract when you first begin. Shot stopping, handling and distribution at 10-11/20. I'm not sure why Ten Hag did not find this unacceptable. Could it be because he is Dutch? Answers on a postcard folks. It would be the first question they ask you on who wants to be a millionaire?

TTW United fans should be lauded for their loyalty tbh. Most United “fans” have gone to City or Real Madrid. TTW got a good group.

And yeah I know there are worse teams to be a fan of. But when you go from top of the world to straight up mince for a decade straight, that's a different type of loyalty being tested than rooting for a team that is simply bad all the time.

It’s funny, when I was a kid, everyone was a Man Utd fan.

You’d go to a birthday party and they’d all be running round in full Man Utd kits :-D you’d see a handful of Wolves and Villa fans (my local teams), but 90% were Man Utd.

I went to one of those soft play places last year (actually really fun, those slides are fast as hell when you’re not 40lbs). But yeah, the number of kids running around in Man City kits was crazy. Never would’ve happened back in my day, they were in the 3rd division back then.
