It's still amazing how quickly things move along. On Sunday night, Amorim was at the held for Sporting away to Braga, and then less than 24 hours later, João Pereira was officially presented as their new head coach. It's interesting to think that he is a 1 year older than Amorim - clearly not a big deal but it shows just how amazing it is that Amorim has achieved so much at such a young age.

He has big shoes to follow, but has adopted the same 3-4-3 formation as Amorim when in charge of the U23 and B team, and the players like him. Hopefully it works out. There's a fine line between trying to maintain as much as what Amorim did as possible, without trying to imitate him completely.

In Porto where I currently am, many fans are worried that after them and Benfica were the top 2 for so long, they could be 'squeezed out' by Sporting and become the weakest out of the big 3 for the foreseeable future. Porto without both Conceição (the longest serving manager in their history by number of games) and Pinto da Costa (president and essentially mafia boss for a whopping 42 years), feels like Man Utd without both Fergie and David Gill in 2013/2014. They've been reliable at beating 'lesser opponents' in the league, but have looked poor in big games against Sporting and Benfica plus in the Europa League. Vítor Bruno, doesn't seem to know what his best starting XI is yet, and they don't seem to have the 'grit' that they had under Conceição.

While fans of any clubs are entitled to moan, I have to admit that I struggle to sympathise with the 'plight' of Porto fans though. They get to see their team winining titles (most recently in 2022), domestic cups (including 3 in the last 2 seasons), and competing in Europe competitions (including reaching the knockout stages) on a regular basis. That seems like a nice, easy ride to me !

I saw that Coventry sacked Mark Robins, who has done a truly wonderful job in charge there, often under incredibly difficult circumstances including when they were locked out of their own stadium for a couple of years and had to play their home games in Birmingham, taking them from League Two to touching distance of both promotion to the Premier League and the FA Cup final.

Frank Lampard is a major contender to succeed him. If I was a Coventry fan, I'd be pretty furious about that.

Sometimes, 'outsiders' and neutral observers can label a managerial sacking as harsh or a downright injustice, while fans of that particular club with far more knowledge support it. But this time it seems like the overwhelming majority of Coventry fans strongly disagreed with the decision to sack Robins, and were not overly worried about their 'slow' start to the season, which recently still included back to back wins against Luton (who admittedly are in crisis) and an impressive 3-0 win away to Middlesbrough.

The harshest Premier League sacking I can recall, was Southampton getting rid of Nigel Adkins, who led them to back to back promotions from League One and the Championship, and then outside the bottom 3 in the Premier League past the halfway stage of the season with a good chance of survival. His last 3 results had been a draw at home to Arsenal, win away to Villa, and draw away to Chelsea (from 2-0 down). But to be fair that paid off, as Poch came in and both the results and the style of play improved at the same time.

It’s funny, when I was a kid, everyone was a Man Utd fan.

You’d go to a birthday party and they’d all be running round in full Man Utd kits :-D you’d see a handful of Wolves and Villa fans (my local teams), but 90% were Man Utd.

I went to one of those soft play places last year (actually really fun, those slides are fast as hell when you’re not 40lbs). But yeah, the number of kids running around in Man City kits was crazy. Never would’ve happened back in my day, they were in the 3rd division back then.

That's why I barely even take City seriously as a rival. Whenever people ask me why I prefer City over Liverpool when it comes to titles it is simple - because they weren't United's rival growing up. Liverpool was.

My United origin story is always funny to tell. I knew nothing about the club. History, wins, anything. They came to America in 2003 to play Barcelona in a friendly. It was right after Diego Forlan joined the team and they wondered if 6 million Euros was an outrageous figure/signing.

I really vibed with the name so I became a fan and never looked back. They have now given me more years of mince as a fan than glory. But I am still here. Little Fedpo would be proud. I don't claim to know the history or players like @Poisoned Slice - but my loyalty is unwavering. I have more than a few times wanted to buy a players shirt from another team and didn't allow myself to do it out of loyalty. I wanted the Lewandowski black and gold Bayern shirt. I wanted a Vini Jr/ Rudiger RM shirt. But I have not allowed myself to do it.

I always kind of chuckle when I read a United fan say a player isn't "big enough for United". It's like bros, we have been utter buttcheeks for the better part of eleven years. Maybe they are big enough for United :D

I'd love to return to the glory days for one reason and one reason only - to see the TTW United fans

That’s my sentiment as well. Growing up I didn’t care for City much. And even now, I don’t care for them. We haven’t been in a title race against each other, maybe 2014 but Mourinho admitted it was dumb luck we even ended up in a title race because the squad wasn’t ready for it. The biggest game in both our histories in 2021, we ended up winning. They started hating us a lot but I still never cared. And even now after they’ve won all these PL’s, I still don’t care. They’re not a rival and if I had a choice I’d take them to win the Prem any day of the week.

Arsenal, Spurs, and Liverpool are my big 3, I hate them all with a burning passion.

I’ve come around to actually liking United as like a 2nd team just cuz my dad supports them and especially now since he’s getting older he’s not reading up on the daily news or watching the stuff on TV much anymore, so I’m helping him out and telling him when they buy someone, sell someone, bring in a new coach, etc…

Total and utter joke.

Tuchel hasn’t even started his job and they’re already blaming him for something he has no control over anyways. The batshit crazy English media have already decided they don’t like a German managing the English NT, since he came in they said he’s worse than Southgate, a negative manager, and dug up his old divorce drama with his ex-wife, and now this. Fckers are gunning for him already and he hasn’t even made a decision yet.

Tuchel will get one tournament, if he doesn’t win it they’ll sack him. And then go back to Sean Dyche or whatever stinky English manager is available.

England never winning anything.

I remember when Man City were in the 3rd tier in 1998/1999 while Man Utd were winning the treble, and to their embarrasment they were in a lower division than Stockport.

They were getting attendances of around 30,000 in the 3rd tier, travelling in large numbers to away games, and dancing in conga lines singing 'bring on Macclesfield'.

Maine Road seemed to have great atmospheres (I was at Blackburn's match in their final season there and it was very noisy), though it was in a scary location in Moss Side.

And in 1999/2000 when they secured their promotion to the Premier League at our stadium, they must have had at least 20,000 fans either inside or just outside it. Alongside Celtic in the UEFA Cup in 2002/2003, that was the best away following I've ever seen at Blackburn. During those days, their loyal and passionate support was regularly praised, with them 'suffering' while Man Utd fans were incredibly spoiled getting to see their team winning trophy after trophy.

They were getting attendances of 40,000 when Stuart Pearce was their manager and they scored a whopping 10 home league goals in 2006/2007. I knew a season ticket holder at that time, who had to miss the game in which they scored 3 of those 10 goals, and so saw them score 7 goals in the 18 home games that he attended. I bet those fans couldn't have imagined that 5 years later they'd be beating Man Utd to the league title after having won the lottery.

The 'problem' that they have, is that their core matchday going support hasn't really increased that much since their takeover, and since they became a trophy winning machine. Pre-takeover, they clearly had a smaller UK fanbase than Tottenham for example, and right now, that's still the case. So their stadium is generally too big for them. Plus for cup and European games when season ticket holders don't want to pay for additional matches (understandably as it can be expensive), unlike Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal etc, they don't have an army of additional fans waiting to come in and their take places.

The passionate and noisy Maine Road was in sharp contrast to the quiet and souless Etihad Stadium nowadays. Then again big and successful clubs in any country typically have very poor atmospheres most of the time, as the fans go there expecting to be entertained and to see their team win. Numerous smaller clubs, at least in the major European leagues, tend to have much better atmopsheres.

Excuse me while I buy the 95 Harry Mags card. Not sure if its legit but the guy selling me it can speak 20 languages.

And yes, that is actually legit :-D a 95 rated Harry Maguire striker card. I think it was Fifa 23. They also had a Cech one. He was running around doing rainbow flicks and Cruyff turns with his helmet on.

David Coote got caught sniffing lines. Lol

If he’s on the white stuff, Anthony Taylor must be on crack.

That stuff makes your hair fall out, plus you only have to watch any Chelsea game he referee’s for confirmation.

I’m not sure there will be any referees left once it all comes out in the wash. We’ll have to bring Uriah Rennie, Paul Alcock and David Elleray out of retirement.

Have you seen Mike Penders recently? When he signed in the summer he was 6’7 and skinny as hell.

Now he’s grown another inch or two and has bulked up.

The days of Sanchez slapping Hojlund’s ankle, kicking it to Brighton twice in 10 minutes, throwing the ball in his own net and leaving Martinelli a 2 yard gap at the near post are nearly behind us :notworthy:

Was he the one who gave that dodgy penalty for West Ham in ETH's last game?

Then again, Slot won't be pleased with him after what he said about his predecessor.

Maybe they're in cahoots.

Screenshot-2024-11-14-at-03-34-43.png
Now I think that he had more people shouting in his ear, warning him not to give the penalty, but Michael Oliver ended up getting the final say. De Ligt certainly wasn't going to take any blame, he takes enough.

''United defender De Ligt said at a news conference while on international duty with the Netherlands that "the referees' committee" had "called us to say that it was not a penalty". De Ligt added: "Normally, I am always self-critical and can get annoyed about things I don't do well. But this was not my fault, I couldn't blame myself for it."

Interesting! I do wonder if refereeing is like this in other countries. It’s almost like a running joke how certain referees will go out of their way to give things against certain teams.

Like reading what people are saying, you see big accounts mentioning Taylor and Chelsea. I didn’t know others paid any attention to it. 1, 2, 3 bad decisions is one thing. But dozens of crazy decisions, multiple each and every game.. it’s just weird. I imagine most teams have that one referee who’s the same.

Then you hear the ex referees, either in interviews or commentary. There was Clattenberg the other week on Amazon saying “yeah, I’d just give the home team a decision here, get the crowd back on side”. You hear other referee’s saying he held grudges against players and teams. There was that Leicester player who said the referee told him “be careful, I should’ve sent you off, but I want you to win it” in their title winning season.

I dunno, all of it stinks.

Then you’ve got VAR, which every other nation seems to be able to use, but we can’t. They’ve all got automated offsides, whilst we’re drawing wonky lines still.

Crazy we haven’t had good goalkeeping since 2021.

Sanchez is about Kepa levels bad. He always, I mean ALWAYS has a mistake in him. We have to score 2 goals every game if we wanna win.

Hopefully Penders can be good enough.

Yeah, does feel like we need to improve in both boxes. Everything in between is pretty much there. A top keeper settles the defence, a big number 9 who is dominant and can get on the end of cut backs and Neto crosses... Kind of like what Samu did against Man Utd. Still can't believe we gave up on him for Felix.

As for Penders, does sound like he has insane talent and ability. He's 19 though.. when you think 25 is young for a keeper. Not sure what we do whilst we wait.

Regarding Alcock and that infamous push, I thought that he should have been booked for diving.

I can’t blame the England players that pulled out of meaningless ‘Nations League B’ games, under a manager that will not be in post after this window, and with so many big club games coming thick and fast. It’s a nice opportunity for a break. When it comes to club vs country, of course the World Cup is far bigger than anything at club level - I’m sure most players would choose 1 World Cup winners’ medal over 1 Champions League / Premier League / La Liga / Serie A etc. medal. But Nations League B games? I care more about Blackburn’s pre-season friendlies.

On a different note for all the criticism that the British and English sports and football media receives, it is far better than Portuguese sports coverage which I’ve experienced again. That revolves around wall to wall coverage of the big 3 including seemingly what their players eat for lunch, the national team, the big name Portuguese stars abroad (especially CRonaldo of course) and little else.

That’s why while Sporting is of course nowhere near big as Man Utd, I was pointing out to people I know that Amorim has dealt with a huge media focus and pressure cooker environment there, where everything he and his club have done have been analysed to death. Any focus on Man Utd in the UK is not on the same level as that. The equivalent of time spent talking about Everton or West Ham in the UK, would be devoted to the big 3 in Portugal. Plus Amorim has often had to deal with clearly biased, pro-Benfica journalists, looking to cause trouble.

Agreed! Maybe that’s why he was waving the red card as he fell down in instalments? Was sending himself off for simulation.

I wasn’t even aware England were on tonight. I assumed it was the weekend. But yeah, not interested in it.

If it wasn’t for this international break we would have Man City v Tottenham on Saturday.. are City really in free fall? Milan v Juventus would also be on Saturday. The weekend of Amorim’s debut at Man Utd. Early next week would see Inter v Leipzig, Bayern v PSG, Liverpool v Real Madrid, Juventus v Villa.

But nope, two weeks off again (y)

I think it’s telling that all the coverage during international breaks are unearthing scandals, bonkers transfer rumours, debates about Salah v Hazard and reminiscing about the Barclays era. People find anything but international games to pass the time.

This was my journey in FIFA since I discovered the magic of Ashley Young + Gabby Agbonlahor before I discovered the magic of Gareth Bale. I always am sympathetic to Villa still except when they are gooning it up against Spurs.

I'll never believe that was a legit sending off. Paolo is a lovely fella, a chip off the old bloke and an enthusiastic man of culture. I got to find this out when he came to West Ham. I think that's what it came down to on that day, there was no malice involved. He even admitted later one that he was in the wrong, but he wasn't wrong really, not my Paolo. It was more of a miscommunication at the highest levels. Bless Paul Alcock's soul, darling.

I imagine husbands up and down the country were squirming in their seats, having flashbacks.

Congrats to Macedonia on beating Armenia 1-0 at home and securing their promotion to League B in the Nations League.

It seems as though they’ve turned a corner but there’s still work to do. Younger guys should get more chances, that’s what we need to prioritize. We started in League D many years ago when the competition began and we’ve slowly made our way up. Now our schedule will include some tougher teams next year and I’m looking forward to it.

In 2021 we qualified for the Euro and in 2022 we upset Italy to come within a game of the World Cup. It seems to have been a downhill slide since then. Thankfully, we have some positivity today and hopefully in the future as well.

Big Ange is hilarious.

I remember when they had that incredible run at the start of last season and everyone was saying he was an elite coach and how Spurs would go invincible.

Soon enough, like it usually does for them, it all came crashing down. And Big Ange has sunk with the titanic.

He’s a few more losses away from going on a Conte 2022 esque rant of epic proportions.

HOLY **** I FORGOT. I put off watching Part 1 for so long, I finally watched it on Monday. Time to watch the 2nd part. Someone posted an AMA on Reddit where they watched part 2 early. He was verified from his previous posts. Apparently, Part 2 sucks if you’re a Hawk fan, so sorry if you like him. But they have really assassinated his character the last few seasons. Miguel also is more important than previously thought.

Thanks. It means nothing to most people but Macedonia has like a 2M population so anything like this is major success and I’m proud of the boys for doing it.

We know nothing about Part 3. Except the name of the final episode in the series. “Ex-degenerate”. A reversal of the opening episode “Ace Degenerate”. People who know KK will know what it means, it’ll take too long to explain.

The show began with Johnny. It’s gonna finish with Johnny.

You missed San Marino against Gibraltar earlier this evening.

But don’t panic! If you can contain your excitement until Monday, they play Liechtenstein (the principality, not the Pop artist).

If you’re looking for something to pass the time until then, Andorra play Moldova tonight.
