I was extremely impressed how in this day and age with constant social media updates and leaks, Porto kept their signing Luuk de Jong completely under wraps until his unveiling during a friendly vs. Atleti. Journalists, and many staff members at the club and including fellow players, were completely in the dark. For fans attending the friendly, it was complete surprise and a very positive one. It seems impossible even for a smaller Premier League club to be able to do that with a new signing in this modern day landscape, but it would be cool if one of them could pull if off.

Staying in the city of Porto, Boavista are another club that have suffered under the disastrous ownership of Gerard Lopez, alongside Mouscron from Belgium and Bordeaux. They have a rich history, recording just the 2nd and to this day final league title win by a non-big 3 club in 2001. But thanks to their dire financial plight they have been shunted to the 5th tier in Portugal this season. Bordeaux are playing in the 4th tier in France for the second consecutive season, while Mouscron were declared bankrupt and dissolved in 2022.

Peter Ridsdale has a terrible track record of running football clubs in England, but Lopez's record is something else.

Opening day meltdown from somebody, idk who yet. United have stocked up on attacking reinforcements, their defense was actually not bad last year. Say what you want about Maguire he was good.

Hoping for a United win. Amorim needs a good start to the season and build some momentum. Only one game a week as well, should be getting back into the top 4/5 realistically imo.

Lots of people blame Ornstein and Fabrizio for this but these transfer leaks were happening before them, too. That was great by Porto, like Sol Campbell going to Arsenal. Best transfers, nobody knows what’s happening until it happens. But that’s not gonna happen in this day and age. It would be mental to see something like that but in today’s world the leaks start 3-4 weeks in advance of deals happening.

Those fit and proper tests the leagues administrate to see if an owner is good enough are ridiculously easy to pass. Clubs can literally just die from a sale that’s supposed to save them. It wasn’t that long ago Thaksin Shinawatra was City’s savior. A gazillionaire wanting to build a rivalry to Fergie’s United. Before he could do anything he got busted for shady dealings and his assets were frozen. City nearly died until the Arabs scooped them up. We complain about certain owners not spending money here in Big 6 Lala-land, could always be worse.

Salah's looked like this for a while now. The fact that he led every stat sheet so much in the PL last season kinda shows how insane he was in the first 2/3rds of the season, because he fell off hard.

Unlike some, I don't really doubt the quality of the new signings. Frimpong, Ekitike and Wirtz all looked great, but Kerkez pushed up too high leaving the defense exposed and that's gonna be the major issue that Slot needs to solve defensively.

Mostly I'm concerned about depth, and the fact that Liverpool didn't sign a DM. They were in for Zubimendi last year, and now they're not even in for one? That baffles me honestly. I do rate Gravenberch, but he's not that top defensive 6 many make him out to be, and he burned out halfway through last seson.

For Liverpool I'm mainly worried about Salah having a bad season. And now that DIaz was sold you may have a huge issue if Gakpo gets injured too, so I don't fancy not getting a LW in too. I don't really understand getting Ekitike and Isak both if you're leaving your wings so lacking in depth.

I’m just not a fan of their business this summer, Liverpool have never been the type to overload the squad with players. They need a little bit of a retool I guess but very rarely do “Galactico” summers go well for anyone. Better to just bring in some lowkey smart names patch a few holes and go at it window by window to gradually replace players. Salah is on the way out and needs replacing probably. And I also don’t get buying Isak when you’ve already got Ekitike.

Liverpool haven’t had a great 6 since Fabinho. He glued Klopp’s squads together and was instrumental in the 2020 title win. Probably their best player that year.

Zirkzee and Onana are back in training. There will be a behind-closed-doors friendly tomorrow, I think, or maybe it's Wednesday. Sesko to get some action before the Arsenal match.

I wonder if the appeal over their place in the Europa/Conference League has affected Palace's transfer activity. Maybe it's not strictly as vital for Palace to get new signings in as early as it was for say, Man Utd, as they've got a settled, functioning first XI, but obvs Glasner is frustrated as they probably need a bit more depth with more fixtures this season, plus the question marks surrounding Guehi can't be great - they seem to have put all of their stock into Liverpool coughing up £40m given that Newcastle turned to Thiaw.

If we want to have the FPL conversation, I had a locked squad with Salah as the centrepiece all month until yesterday, now I’m spooked and have redone my squad about 20 times with zero hint of a conclusion. Gotta love FPL week! Honestly no clue who to go for this year, the only real definite in my team is Cole Palmer - and if Chelsea sign Simons even he might not be finalized. Someone who’s good at FPL, please help
 
The rule that Palace fell out foul is utterly stupid and should be scrapped IMO. But ultimately it's in place and so was going to be enforced - I don't think there should be any controversy about that point.

They had a deadline of March 1st to show UEFA proof of multi-club ownership restructuring. That was the same date as their FA Cup 5th round match vs. Millwall, and they most likely didn't think at that stage that they'd win the competition or be in the Europe the following season.

If I was a Palace fan, I'd take a step back and think that the main prize back in May was winning the first major trophy in their history, deservedly so and as heavy underdogs in the final. European qualification was a simply very nice bonus on top of that.

They should look at West Ham in 2023, and target a good run in the Conference League.

I’m struggling because the prices are all quite similar. The best defenders all seem to be £6m, there are a lot of good strikers (not named Haaland) all costing £7.5m.

Which one(s) should I pick? No idea!

Suppose that’s a good thing. There are no bad options, everyone should have good, but quite different looking teams.

I don't quite share the same optimism, although I'm excited about the new season. I'd say more than last year because we all knew Erik Ten Hag was on borrowed time. It kind of feels like a fresh start. I'm still hopeful for a couple more signings.

I did laugh when we got the ''Amorim is a fan.'' Yeah, I'd like to think so. Still not daring to dream about this one. Ha It sounds like I'm not optimistic about anybody signing these days. But even forgetting that, if it were as simple as paying him wages, then of course, I'd be all for it. Having a wage limit is understandable, sure, but for something like this, go above and beyond if there's a real chance he could sign.

Meanwhile, apparently Chiesa was told by Slot he ain't getting sold because they're short on warm bodies up there in Merseyside.
 
There's a good chance that the Villarreal-Barcelona La Liga match scheduled for December will be played in Miami.

The local Villarreal fans would miss out on one of the biggest / most glamorous home matches of the season. And for Barcelona, one of their most difficult away games on paper would essentially transform into a home game in terms of crowd support. Yes they actually have a strong record away to Villarreal during the past decade or so, but that's completely besides the point.

Clearly both teams would receive a ton of money for their efforts (Villarreal would have to demand a decent amount of money to lose a home game), and it would likely open the floodgates for more domestic league matches and probably Champions League games to be held abroad / in a different continent.

It's things like this which further reinforce how glad I am to support a smaller club, that isn't remotely close to being in the scope of any of this.

Fab linked Donnarumma with Chelsea, United and City. Fabrice Hawkins said Chelsea and United contacted him this afternoon.

So two teams consistently linked from the two best sources on this, I’d have to assume it will be United or Chelsea.

I ruled it out because of wages, but if they are literally forcing him out and he won’t even be in the matchday squad all season? Maybe he will reduce them a bit.

Currently on £215k and £90k in bonuses.

We could probably stretch to £180k, which would probably be better than being in the bomb squad.

There was also that viral video of Donnarumma and Maresca having a long conversation after the CWC final. You’d think London and UCL for the chance of revenge against PSG would be attractive to him.

As we can see here from the hand gestures, they are communicating fluently in Italian

Having said that, our hands are tied by UEFA rules. Can only register him if we sell someone. Man Utd don’t have those restrictions. So we would have to sell Sanchez (who doesn’t want to leave) late in the window. Can’t see that being possible.

Another tick in the Man Utd box. Despite everyone reporting we aren’t looking at a centre back, in the last few days we’ve contacted Guehi, Branthwaite and Hincapie. None were possible, but they’re definitely after one. Again, it’s going to be very hard to register Simons, Garnacho, a CB and Donnarumma.

Overall, I’d say Man Utd essentially have a free run at him.

Liverpool seem to have shelved Isak for the time being and are chasing centre backs. Man City seeing if Donnarumma is possible.

Bit of Spurs with Eze, but not too sure on that one.

That’s about it.

No doubt it’ll pick up again next week after the first games have been played and some teams are in panic mode :p

Nothing new really. The reporters rehash an earlier article or podcast with a few words changed around, and nothing new is discovered despite listening to 10 different updates. You know the drill. Then we had the ol - ''Brighton reportedly reject opening bid.'' I always love how they put reportedly in there. Lame articles but true pros. lol

The gist of it is that Man Utd is still thinking it over. “Brighton has a status as fierce negotiators.” :D No joke.

Yeah, they're no joke :-D the only easy ones we've had with them were Sanchez (don't think they could believe their luck that someone wanted him) and Joao Pedro happened in a day. I think they wanted him gone after he thought Van Hecke was Ivan Drago and they threw down in training.

Caicedo was a nightmare though.

To be fair to them, I can see their point. Newcastle and Palace won trophies last season. Why not Brighton this year? They're well in the mix for Europe. You'd also think Liverpool or City will come in for Baleba next summer, bit of a bidding war. Then they've got the Caicedo price as a marker, no need to accept anything less.

Then again, Man Utd have a free run at him now and they don't have UEFA rules to abide by.. so makes sense to just bite the bullet.
 
Today I'll get to deal with Bradford supporting colleagues gloating to me about yesterday's result at Ewood Park !

Fair play to them though, and what a start going 2-0 up inside the first 5 minutes. We made 8 changes from Saturday, but they made changes as well. We normally play well in this early round League Cup matches against teams in lower leagues. I'm not going to overreact, but we do need to some bodies in, even if its merely loanees from Premier League clubs, before end of the transfer window.
 
It's funny when you have the FPL midfielders listed by total points and then imagine those Bruno, Mbeumo and Cunha points were all for United. (588) My goodness. But back in the real world, I shall check out the game later.

If any one of the players had been £0.5 million cheaper, I could have chosen my ideal (realistic) 15 man squad to start with. Ah well.

I think it’s automatic, as long as the person who set up the league has reactivated it (which @bezs has).

How’s the team looking? I really shouldn’t have made a team without Salah or Haaland last week. The amount of money you can spread around was very nice! Not sure if I can risk going without one of them, though.

Thanks ! For a while I couldn't even login to set up my team, so I was worried there.

I'm thinking that Salah is going to be much better in the first half of the season than second half after AFCON, so I'm going to have him in from the start, and not bother with Haaland. Then I'll get rid of Salah ahead of AFCON and probably not bring him back in, at least straight away.

But he's my only Liverpool player. I was thinking about picking Wirtz as well, but I went for Mbeumo based on his Premier League track record and the fact that he's £0.5 million cheaper. I might change my mind though and shift things around before the deadline !

But no, I think he’s actually supposed to be a very good player. I think the big clubs have him on their radar. Seems like a good pick!

The Salah logic is sound. It just feels to me like they’ve priced him as if he’s going to repeat what he did last season. I’m pretty confident he won’t. He’ll still be one of the highest scorers, but I think it will be more comparable to other players.. and they cost £5m less!

Then you've got the new players. Is everything going to go through Wirtz? Is Ekitike (or Isak) going to take over as the main goal scorer? I actually think that would be better for Liverpool, being less reliant on an ageing Salah.

Just not sure I have the stomach to risk it. It’s a long old season when you’ve messed up badly early on!

I’ll watch, just on the off chance PSG have had a batch of dodgy lasagne in Udine last night, but I’m fully expecting a 4/5-0 hiding, likely even uglier than the CL Final. Levy hasn’t improved the team whatsoever and PSG are the best in the world.

Apparently Chelsea are rubbish and even they beat them 3-0 in a meaningless friendly that PSG bizarrely really wanted to win.

Chelsea are just a Conference League team, whilst Spurs won the Europa League! Anything less than 3-0 is a poor showing.
 
I thought I had my team ready after a lot of clicking last night. As usual, I had to go back. I stared for a couple of minutes, rubbed my chin, then stared again. Next thing you know, I'm down to 11 players. As usual, despite everything, the Man Utd bias is there, although I left it with 2 players. The main decision was Mbeumo or Cunha. I'd like to think I've made the right decision.

I believe the team now will be it unless something major happens, like an injury, because my team looks like it is transfer window-proof.

Yeah, the Spurs team looks much stronger on paper. Hard to imagine PSG can get anything from this apart from leaving with their heads held high after managing to contain Spurs for the first 10 minutes.

Yup, lots of rotation. PSG B team essentially. No Donnarumma, Joao Neves, Fabian Ruiz.

Chelsea were up 3-0 at half time. Spurs should be 4 up by then, at least.

I started laughing when I put on Sky Sports around the same time I was looking at posts here. Kralingen's post about Levy being Levy, as I read the article, and Levy was saying Frank must compete at the highest level immediately. 8-B

Frank wants signings. He went to the Levy, but the Levy was dry :D

I see they’ve opted for a back 7 in an attempt to stink the place out/hang on for dear life.

We are competing at the highest level with Kevin Danso, Bentancur, and Richarlison in the team. Levy is a top class comedian. Last week he publicly said “our ambition is to win the Premier League AND the Champions League” :-D
