The most goals in last 10 minutes stat came up then all of a sudden Martial is in and another goal in the last 10. It was great. Did feel like a deserved win. Think it comes down to Martial's cool French elegance. Not that I dislike Rashford, he almost made a chance for Lukaku before he came off. At the time of the sub I would have kept Rashford on but I can see that there was no chance of taking Lukaku off. Worked in the end. Need to make chances for the big man since he is not the most dynamic centre forward in the world.

Ter Stegen with some great saves, Barca won 2-0 on a tough trip to Bilbao. This one is for you uncle, RIP.

Bad miss from Messi in the first half but he made up for it with the opening goal. Massive credit goes to Ter Stegen for the win. That's 4 points from the two tough away games so far, which is solid.

Visca el Barca i visca Catalunya!

How does it feel seeing Girona, your Catalan neighbors, beat Real Madrid in their first ever meeting and putting you 8 points clear? Because I am certainly enjoying that. :D

Awful performance. There goes the La Liga title, Barcelona are consistency monsters domestically. However I am not writing the guys off for a Champions League three-peat yet.

It was beautiful, Real looked clueless out there. Visca Catalunya. :p
It would be great if the lead is still 8 points after the first El Clasico. But let's not completely ignore Valencia, they are on some very good form and have played both Real and Atletico already.

Sounds like a bad translation to me. I heard it as ''Zidane out.''

Replace him with Rafa Benitez. Back to complete his mission.

Good matches tonight. Settled on Spurs vs Real. I'm hoping Real show up and that Kane will score a hattrick. Goals, entertainment. The dream. Time for Spurs to really break Wembley in as their home. Big win over the fading force.

Harry Kane is a bit of alright, ain't he? The rugged x factor. :p Throwback. I can see him in James Cagney movies.

Ronaldo - the best player in the world! For all you Ronaldo gloaters out there, here's the difference between Ronaldo and Messi. When Ronaldo doesn't score, he is basically useless. When Messi doesn't score, he is still almost always Barca's best player on the pitch.

They are provided in a way to tell everyone that Ronaldo isn't useless when not getting on the scoresheet. No need to tell me that Messi is a better playmaker, everyone sane knows that.

Not useless, but so far off being a great footballer without his goals. I would never ever label Ronaldo a genius, yet some people call him the GOAT.

Take away Messi’s goals and his status becomes clearly lower as well. ;)

    Ignore the title. :D

Ronnie is one of the 5-10 all time greatest footballers. More goal focused in recent years but still scary good in front of it. And he had insane skills and more than solid vision earlier. It still takes a big amount of talent or genius as you say to be like him. All the numbers can't lie.

Take away Messi’s goal and you have the best playmaker and footballer on the field. Dude, come on...

That Ronaldo is complete doesn’t make him a genius in any way and you know it. When someone needs five stepovers to get past opponents and spends the last years of his career inside the penalty area, speaks volumes of his football abilities. Compare that with Messi who began dictating the game more and more once he physically declined. Ronaldo doesn’t have those playmaking features, hence him hovering around in the penalty area waiting for brilliant Modric/Isco/Bale/Asensio passes. However, Ronaldo is very likely the best football player ever inside the box, but that’s a different matter altogether.

I don't want to take anything away from either of them . They yam what they yam. Both amazing. It's more tiring than Federer vs Nadal threads or another of those threads you see repeated a billion times. And I've been around the Ronaldo vs Messi debates much longer than I've been here. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

But seriously, what is the 411 with Real Madrid? What is going wrong this season? Maybe going a bit stale? Name for name the midfield looks amazing. Not sure if Modric still has it etc. Only really going on the match from last night.

He isn't automatically the best football player on the field all the time even now, and that obviously becomes less often if we take away his goals.

What does make someone a genius then? Let's not pretend that Cristiano doesn't have stunning touch and flair himself. Messi is dictating more and more now since the rest of his current teammates suck in comparison with most world class playmakers. Give him Xavi and Iniesta again and he won't be going so deep anymore or as often. Now he will stand out more, to his enormous credit. Ronaldo has lost some of his pace and is now surrounded by some stunning teammates, no reason for him to ditch now his more favorite role. But back in the day when his teammates were far less good than now, he played his role of a versatile winger/striker excellently as well. Not Messi level of course but easily Tier 1 great material.
Slump from several players. Big enough for Barcelona to take control of La Liga but once CL knockout rounds start, we will see who has eternal class.

Yes, Man United will show their class in the knockout stages.

Not getting the white handkerchief out then? Was funny hearing how they would have been out if the Spurs match was at the Bernabeu.

    King Eric ftw
    Here is hoping. :)

Absolutely not. No matter who the opponent is I would have faith in this Madrid team. Only Barca (read: Messi) would make me worry somewhat. As for the handkerchiefs, yeah some of the Bernabeu crowd are very ungrateful and have short memories. Admittedly in the heat of the moment I had some rants about Ronnie and some other players here myself, but if I had the luck to be there live I would show full constant support because those guys deserve it after what they have done recently in the CL despite previous big struggles.

No slip up from City today.

Chelsea looking stronger than United at the minute. Feels like a matter of time.

Damn bad timing. There it is. Morata with the goal. Beautiful header.

    @Feña14 enjoying the game?

Red Nev spot on again. Nobody in the United team to make the killer passes. Open game with Chelsea always looking more threatening.

I did enjoy it, a surprisingly open game!

Kante back was crucial, as was Christensen. I’m not sure how long it’s going to take Conte to cotton on to the fact we always look far better at the back when he plays.

As for United, it’s a shame they lost. They actually tried to attack for a change! Get ready for the bus to be parked now Mourinho lost doing it :p

you just knew he'd miss, the absolute ****ing **** cleverley, put a dampener on an otherwise great weekend.

hmm wonder if uefa will bother with this, have a feeling it'll just get swept under the rag...imagine if that was Suarez. media would be calling for a life ban and what not. heck he was given 8 match ban for things he never actually said (Evra playing the victim card as per)yet no one (besides the club) batted an eyelid. hope the vile **** gets decked ,few months on the sidelines sounds fair to me.

    :D

still think you can win the title or even run city close? hows mourinhos record in the big games(after all he's the self proclaimed special one, the master tactician etc.)? what about the performances, are you happy with averaging about 2-3 shots on target in the big games? you ok with being the second best team in Manchester for the fifth year in a row?

    :p

I know this isn't addressed to me but it is a public mall. We miss Pogba. Nah, I'm now convinced that United cannot run City close this season. Think now I can only say that the performances have been better against smaller teams but they still lost out against Huddersfield and City look unstoppable. The statistics, goals scored, points, shots against 'rivals' are some of the worst you will ever see. Too many players becoming invisible.

Champions league can't be ruled out by me. :p That could be where Jose earns that coin.

If we can't challenge them, nobody will. And we were the best team in Manchester for like several decades so they can have their moment in history, I can understand all the past frustrations. As for Mou's record in big games, he's won a very nice amount of them throughout his career. Not satisfied with some of the performances right now but we both know that #21 is more likely to happen before #19. :p

Although no player or manager will admit it, I think they’re already resigned to playing for 2nd place. It’s not a title as such, but the battle to be best out of Spurs, Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal should be pretty entertaining and somewhat meaningful.

Too early to elect City champions but I am glad Pep's philosophy is working very well in England at the moment. Unlike in Germany he has several more than decent competitors in the Premier League and so far all of them that City played were beaten: Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal. The nearest followers Manchester United and Tottenham remain and against them I'd favor City too. Scary side at the moment.

Yet another international break. Not that I hate them but it always feels like club football just restarted and then it's a pause again.

Totally agree about the international breaks. I think it’s on it's last legs personally. The power is with the clubs and the quality is most certainly in the club game. Throw in the way the social political climate has been going the last few decades, which is best not to get into, I wouldn’t be surprised to see an end to international football in my lifetime.

As for Pep’s philosophy working well in England.. I think it’s the money more than anything. When you have that much quality, in the quantity that they do, it would take some seriously bad coaching for them not to look on a different level. It’s like saying the PSG philosophy is what separates them in France, it’s not, the quality gap between the individual players and that of their rivals is the key factor imo.

I don't expect it to be that drastic but we shall see.

That is true to a certain extent. As Pep once said, the key to good management is having good players. :p But while majority of the big clubs spend a lot nowadays which is totally out of control, it's still only going to be one winner per country and continent. Some of the recent examples showed that while the big teams usually win, it's not always the biggest spenders, money won't guarantee success. And to be fair the Premier League has better competition than the French. United, Chelsea, Spurs, maybe Liverpool, all of these can be worthy competitors to anyone in the world. Can't say that about the likes of Lyon or Marseille anymore. Maybe Monaco but that’s it.

Oh yeah it’s definitely a bold call on the subject of international football. I just can’t see how something that promotes national pride and the consequences of the social/political landscape will still be alive in 50 years if things stay as they are, especially when the quality is pretty basic compared to what the club sides are producing.

As for Pep, I don’t think we’ll ever really know how good or bad he is. His philosophy is so specific and niché that it can only work with supremely talented players capable of playing it. You could put Pep in charge of Chelsea now for instance, who are a very good team, but 5 years down the line I don’t think he would be successful. Every manager does better with players with the skill set that suits their philosophy, but he’s reliant on it more than any other top manager imo.

    VERY BOLD

Can't see the end of international football. Want to try and take that this sort of thing away from us (world cup playoff) after not being in the position in over 30 years? Things like this. Highly unlikely. Just gotta suffer on through it while England continue to under perform.

Thinking further ahead and not being selsish about the GAWA. I'd definitely vote for end to internationals if I ever had the chance.

Apparently Neymar is bored with how easy it is in Paris and can’t be bothered with the league games.

Maybe Simeone can sign him as his first piece of business? A Premier League relegation battle should be a different challenge for him :p
