No doubt that Switzerland has the best of the game. I was hoping for a little more from Northern Ireland. Of course, I have to complain about a harsh penalty. Looks quite legit when slowed down but look at the speed of the play as it happens. Awk well. Them's the breaks.

That's a joke of a penalty if you ask me. What was the guy supposed to do, cut his arm off? Reflex reaction, protecting himself, arm right next to the body, and he got penalized for that and that decided the 1st leg. With these kinds of decisions not being so rare I am surprised players don't aim for defenders' arms more often.

It would have to happen in one of their biggest games in years. Felt so sorry for Corry Evans. Now suspended for the away match. The referee is an onion chant, I'll be nice. That was the chant during a more innocent childhood time. Fully justified tonight. I like to be able to praise the opposition and not be bitter about a result. :/

Independent of the decision, the best team won.

Still alive, if hanging by a thread. Mission impossible? Boys need to play the game of their lives on Sunday and hope something crazy happens.

    Lets shock the world!

Italy in a bit of trouble now. Sweden won 1-0 at home in the 1st leg. Pity that even if they qualify Zlatan won't return to the national team for the World Cup. My bad, the national team wouldn't return to Zlatan. :p

Lukaku scored a brace in a 3-3 draw against Mexico. Where was that for the club in the last month or so, pal? :D Meanwhile both Poland-Uruguay and England-Germany ended up being scoreless draws. Booooo

I personally don't think that yellow cards from the group stage should be carried through to the playoffs, so I feel sorry for any players that miss any play-off matches due to yellow card suspensions.

Similarly in the Champions League or Europa League for example, I have always thought that players shouldn't miss finals due to yellow card suspensions (of course red card suspensions are a different story), and that they should instead be carried over into the next season. I remember in 2012/2013 when 6 Bayern players were one yellow card away from suspension, going into their semi-final 2nd leg at the Camp Nou, but all 6 of those players started (even thought they were 4-0 from the 1st leg), none of them were booked, and they won the game 3-0.

The 2 inter-continental play-offs are finely balanced after 0-0 draws in the first legs.

Australia did well to avoid defeat in Honduras, which is a tough place to go (as Mexico and the USA have often found out) with a very hostile crowd (plus Honduras is a scary place to visit in general). Peru were unable to score an away goal in New Zealand, but hopefully they can win the return leg at home to qualify for their first World Cup since 1982.

For those of you suckers for punishment who watched the England game, was Loftus-Cheek as good as people are saying?

Every back page seems to be raving about him this morning.

See Evra's got seven months for kicking a fan in the head. Got off lightly to be honest, especially with the overall theme of bigger bans these days, doesn't matter what the guy said to him, you kick someone in the head and you could kill them.

Did anyone really watch that match? I'm a little doubtful, why would you put yourself through that,on a related topic I have to say it was one of the most woeful looking England squads I've ever seen, I think that side would get relegated in the Premier League with it's current squad and manager.

Haha I can’t remember the last time I saw England, maybe the loss to Iceland? So I can’t really comment too much. I suppose the squad looks full of young players who have a bit of potential and are in decent form, which is certainly different from the old days where the same players were picked and failing time after time.

Probably the same for me, guess it'll be the world cup the next time. There are a few, yeah (was pleased to see Gomez get his debut, well deserved) but when you have Jake Livermore starting in midfield, it's not exactly inspiring.

The luxury of having De Bruyne and Hazard. We are all complaining about international breaks, but I bet Lukaku couldn't wait to get away to join up with Belgium. No invisible service with these guys. :p

A brutal way for it to end. Much easier to accept defeats when you're not hard done by. Has to some extra salt lurking inside me tonight. Just looking at their faces after the final whistle.

The one moment during the tie that I dared to dream. Time stood still. Then it was cleared.

So Italy have failed to qualify for the World Cup. Some other big names in each continent like Netherlands, USA, Chile, Ivory Coast, Ghana also missed out. Argentina barely got over the line. Meanwhile we got there as group winners and after that sacked the manager.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Italy failing to qualify for the World Cup is on a completely different level to the Netherlands failing to do so. The Netherlands failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup when they had a significantly stronger squad than they have now, and also humiliatingly failed to qualify for a 24 team Euro 2016.

Italy on the other hand are one of the 3 greatest nations in football history, will miss out on the World Cup for the first time in 60 years. It's crazy but it shows how far they've declined.

It if you look at their squad, there is a clear lack of quality there.Their best players are their Juventus defensive contingent of Chiellini, Barzagli and Buffon plus their ex-Juve team-mate Bonucci. What do they have in midfield and attack? Not a whole lot.

Mourinho's treble winning Inter team in 2010 didn't have a single Italian first team regular, and Juve have dominated Serie A over the last 6 years and reached 2 champions league finals in the last 3 years with South American and non-Italian attacking players. So the writing has been on the wall.

They stunk up the joint in their last 2 World Cup appearances (failing to make it out of their 2010 group with Paraguay, Slovakia and New Zealand was especially unforgivable), so they probably won't be a big loss.

Hurts like anything. I don't we will get this close again for a long time.

    That split second...

Gutted for the players and Michael, but what a performance. They fought for their dream.

Stunning, congrats Sverige. Beat the Italians at their own game in Italy. :D Could have had a penalty or two in the 1st half as well. Those had a bigger case for being a penalty than the one Switzerland had against Northern Ireland. Underdogs just can't catch a break.

That's it then. All 32 participants for the 2018 World Cup confirmed.

Don't really know who to cheer for. I guess a South American team winning would be nice for a change, it's been 16 years. As always when it comes to dark horses and massive underdogs, hoping Croatia and Serbia will do well.

Leo dragging his national team to the title would be easily one of the most beautiful football stories. :) I hope others will perform well too, especially if they reach the final stages. Too many heartbreaks recently... :(

Not that it matters to you but it would also go a long way to helping him win over some of those national team and world cut nuthuggers.

Oh, but, Maradona didn't have Aguero with him.

True. Though if they run into Spain, I won't be having my Messi worshiper glasses on. ;) Anyway when everything is said and done he will be called the greatest by many even without the World Cup.

Maradona also didn't have Higuain with him. Messi must have been a criminal in his previous life, can't think of any reason why he got punished this way. :p

Unlucky. Maybe karma hit Chile for those two penalty shootout wins, they failed to reach this World Cup. :D

I would love to see that. Even with all the world class players we have, Messi is in a league of his own. The little man is literally the only reason I'm giving Argentina a shot to win the World Cup. Same goes for Barcelona recently in the Champions League and La Liga. Mind boggling stats but it doesn't tell even 20% of what a player he is.

Very happy to see Peru qualifying after a 36 year absence.

I work with 2 Chilean guys who love international breaks. In Europe we get a lot of tedious qualifying matches against minnows so to speak, although Luxembourg drawing with France and Liechtenstein famously coming back from 2-0 down to draw against Portugal during the 2006 WC qualifiers are special.

However in South America there are no minnows so every WC qualifying match is exciting and a big deal. Even a match like Bolivia at home should be as easy as it gets in South America, but due to the huge Chile-Bolivia rivalry and historical and political hatred, that is basically war on the football pitch as well. They pretty much have the ideal 4 year international cycle in South America.

The draw will be on the 1st of December.

I think it could be a very good tournament. Doesn't feel like Germany stand head and shoulders above the rest. France having insane quality and depth, Spain looking to bounce back after the recent transition and slump, Brazil improving a lot, Messintina always a threat, some dark horses... Pity it's taking England forever to become one of the best.
The team missed Pogba a lot. But all eyes are on the Lion from the North. Kom igen Zlatan!

The return of 4-4-2 like in the good old Fergie days perhaps? To me it seems likely that the team will become scary good in a couple of years or so as new world class talent comes and the chemistry improves between the ones that are already there.

That was quick. Yeah I know he's been out for over half a year but it was mentioned that Zlatan's return will happen in December, no?

Sounds good to me. I miss 442 so much. That was my formation, wingers, defensive midfielder and attacking midfielder/box to box etc. Two men up front. Not wingers drifting in as forwards. Real forwards.

I hope that Zlatan hasn't been rushed back. Of course, you have to think the medical team know what they're doing, and Zlatan is not going to mess about with his body. You can take all the precautions you want, just his age and how severe the injury was. I'm a little worried. Best scenario for me would be a good lead and then he comes on for last 15-20 minutes. I'm thinking like he is in the squad so he will play. Excited at the same time.

Play with and without Pogba has been night and day this season. We always have abysmal record against top sides but then I think about Pogba last season and he wasn't making much impact early on. His play and stats tell a different story this season.

I'll cry myself to bed thinking about the Di Maria transfer to PSG if Man United go 4-4-2. Actually I've been doing that already no matter what the formation is.

Zlatan seems to be a physical phenomenon. To my knowledge the guy didn't have any major injuries before now. Probably missed more career games through suspension than injury. :D Suarez is similar in that regard. Anyway, I hope Zlatan will stay beyond this season as well. He is still scoring a solid amount of goals, even in the Premier League. Class is eternal.

Meanwhile, poor Borussia Dortmund got destroyed once again LOL. 5 rounds ago they had a 5 point lead at the top of the table. A draw and four losses followed, and now Bayern are already approaching double digit lead over them.

City won again. A clean sheet as well. What a surprise.

A comfy United win would be a surprise. Come on, surprise me.

Pogba starts. yes, yes, yes. Rashford and Martial both on.

The moment we've all been waiting for.

    Ibra is coming.

Worked out pretty much how it went it my mind. Good lead and no real pressure on Ibra as he got his 15-20 minutes. Did enjoy his fancy volley in the 89th minute. Pogba, oh yeah, you have been missed, my son.

City refuse to lose though. Quite fortunate today but when you're good you're good.

Another poker of goals at home. Nice. Pogba with a goal and assist on his return. Most of other players did a solid job too. Zlatan playing again, beautiful.

Unbeaten at home in the last 38 games (all competitions), equaling the club's longest run since the beginning of the Premier League era. Pretty much expected stuff with Mourinho in charge, building a fortress, shame for some of those comical draws. Now if only the away performances could improve...
